hey guys, last year was my 1st year of competitive play. well team tryouts are next week. we had an "open gym" like thing for hockey today. just go out and skate shoot around we had some scrimmage games. well what does that have to do with anything? last year like i said first year. first game i hurt my leg. ankle, knee, and groin. i had a torn groin, sprained ankle, and messed up cartilage in my knee. i got home today and nothing, no pain, no stiffness no anything. i had to go help my mom move a book shelf at school. i lifted up and felt a SHARP pain. it went away. it is just really tight. ihave never felt that bad of pain. is it possible i re-tore my groin. i have try-outs next week and REALLY want to make this team. what do you recommend? tell the coach im hurt or wait another year?

Go get the heating pad, use it 20 minutes at a time, and hope it's not serious!

If he tore it or reinjured his groin, that's the worst thing to be doing. Ice first, then once all swelling/muscle swelling goes away, use heat.

If its swollen I would suggest some advil.... Don't do much to aggravate it more, as it could get worse.... The best thing to do is just let it be until its fully healed but you have a tryout coming up. So just ice, rest, advil it up till the try out but if you can't handle the pain I would suggest you tell the coach your hurting.

A pulled groin should only take about a week to heal. I actually pulled my groin last week and only had to skip three days of working out. On the third day I was able to go very lightly (just stickhandled in my garage while bouncing around and weaving in and out of clutter) and by day four I was doing a full workout again.

A torn groin can take longer to heal, depending on the grade of the injury. The fact that you were let go without any recommendations for therapy or medications indicates to me that you're probably fine.

In any case, explain to the coach what the problem is. If you hit the ice and feel like you can't keep going just let him know. You saying "mercy" won't look nearly as bad if he knows that you're practicing injured. The fact that you're still out there fighting through the pain should be an indicator of your dedication.

For good measure, tape up your thigh. It'll support the muscles your adductor (groin) attaches to the hip as well as the adductor itself. It'll also make you look way tough in the dressing room :P

Actually, thigh being what it is, you'll need something with some stretch. Use an ace bandage instead. Also, get a good compression short to wear in the future, they help prevent these kinds of issues, and since you've already have a few you should do what you can to keep from turning into Marian Gaborik.

A pulled groin should only take about a week to heal.

Just wondering if you would share your credentials with us, are you a MD, a surgeon, orthopedic specialist, which or all?

No way are you qualified or competent to diagnose what the injury is or how long it will take to cure.

To the original poster, call your doctor or whoever refered you to get the MRI and ask them what you should be doing for pain management, swelling, what the injury involves, etc. Do yourself a huge favor and instead of getting advice from a hockey board, go to the guy who you're paying for medical advice and find out from him first hand.

That is good advice ... the compression short is a good idea in the future even after it is healed up for a while anyway.

I blew a hammy badly and missed a few months about 15 years ago and anything leg or groin is just absolutely maddening to try and play on.

The best advice would be give it time to heal but you want to make the team.

You should tell the coach for sure absolutely. he just may take it into consideration if you are trying out that you can't give your all but he should be able to tell if you have the talent they need anyway.

None of the above... I'm just going on personal experience and the information I scoured on the Internet last week in relation to my groin pull last week.

Then again, that's why I used the word "should" in place of the word "will".

me said:

As you get in crazy good skater shape, your groin will be bouncing back so much faster. I once thought I tore up my groin because I could barely walk that night but it was fine within 36 hours.

And yeah, you're right. For some reason, I was thinking he said it happened a day before. Ice is normally best within the first 24 hrs, then heat after that.

Stuff happens when playing a sport like hockey. I had 6 weeks off from a torn bicep and coming back I have a stiff middle finger from jamming it while playing and I got hit in the ass last night by a slapshot and it is sore today.

There always seems to be something ... I had a hip flexor issue for a couple of months earlier this year too.

You'll be okay with some time off like you said.

Going to the doctor was the right thing to do. I don't care how much experience people here have with injuries, 1 they are medical professionals, and 2 they can't properly examine and test the area in question.

Medical advice posted here is one of my big time pet peeves.

Make sure when you see your doctor you are honest with him about your plans for going to tryouts and see what he says. Also, see if he will recommend stretching exercises for you if he feels your ready. Take your time with this and follow his advise, that's what you pay him for.

well, i got some news.
went to the physician for a check-up. he said that i could play. but he doesnt recommend it. he told me if there is pain, and you are uncomfortable with it, dont play. and its sore and just feels really stiff. he said it could still be pulled. he said, tell your coach and see if he can just leave a spot for you. so i guess im going to go call the coach.

Try outs are the last place you want to be if you're not 100%.

Totally your call, but think about this. What good is making the team if re-injure yourself and can't play...

Either way, best of luck.

i called coach. this is what he told me. exact words.

"i saw you try out last year. i know you are dedicated. il leave an open spot for you. you might play on Juinor Varsity for a couple games though. If you will stay dedicated and be happy with the playing time you get because i am not guaranteeing that you will start your first game on Varsity."

i told him that i would be back as soon as i can. i hope this year goes good. we still have another 2 weeks before our first game. just practices and practice games. should be a good team this year
