The following posts contain a team-by-team breakdown of the 1965-1966 Soviet League, tier I. The vast majority of the information is sourced from the Russian "forum of hockey statisticans" (Форум хоккейных статистиков) now located at ice-hockey-stat.com. Alle the credit in the world to the people over there who e.g. have gone through the archives of the Sovietsky Sport newspaper to collect box scores and so on. 1965-1966 is the first season where they have game line-ups which enabled me to figure out the most frequently used forward lines and defensive pairings on each team.

The stats provided in the roster section might differ slightly from numbers found elsewhere – that's because the sources (Soviet papers, books etc) themselves also differ here and there. Assists are not included as they were not commonly tracked, but some yearbooks from the 1960s still come up with assist numbers, so somebody was obviously awarding them, albeit very sparingly. In fact they were awarded so sparingly (obviously following a peculiar/strict definition of what constitutes an assist and what doesn't) that I'm not convinced of their worth. Sturminator has put together a file with those assists numbers the Society of International Hockey Research has gathered. That file can be found in another thread.

Venues used in the 1965-1966 season:

MOSCOW, main venues:

Luzhniki Palace of Sports
Indoor stadium, main hockey venue in Moscow. Part of the Luzhniki complex ("Central Stadium named in honour of V. I. Lenin") opened in 1956. Capacity ~14,500, but rarely sold out. Only CSKA and Spartak Moscow manage to draw 10,000 spectators and more.

Sokolniki Stadium
Outdoor stadium with artificial ice. Opened in 1956. Still the second most important venue in Moscow after the Luzhniki Palace of Sports, quite frequently used. Capacity apparently ~6,000.

MOSCOW, other venues:

CSKA Sport Palace
Second indoor venue in Moscow after the Luzhniki Palace of Sports. Opened in 1961. Capacity apparently ~4,000.

Dinamo Stadium
Outdoor stadium mostly used for soccer and athletics. Opened in 1928. Also used as hockey rink with natural ice during the winter. Capacity ~35,000.

Red October Stadium
Outdoor stadium also used as hockey rink with natural ice during the winter. Not sure about the capacity, but I haven't seen a number higher than 4,000 at any game there.

Luzhniki Small Sports Arena
Outdoor stadium also used as hockey rink with natural (?) ice during the winter. Capacity ~15,000.

Luzhniki Grand Sports Arena
Centerpiece of the Luzhniki Complex. Outdoor stadium mostly used for soccer and athletics. Normally not used for hockey, but hosted the top games of the 1957 World Ice Hockey Championship in Moscow with record audiences of 50,000 and more.

The following abbreviations have been used in this thread to indicate which Moscow venue a game took place at:
LP = Luzhniki Palace of Sports
LS = Luzhniki Small Arena
S = Sokolniki Stadium
D = Dinamo Stadium
R = Red October Stadium
C = CSKA Sports Palace

OUTSIDE OF MOSCOW

Kiev, Palace of Sports
Indoor stadium, capacity apparently 8,500. Opened in December 1960.

Voskresensk, Khimik Stadium
Outdoor stadium with natural ice.

Leningrad [St. Petersburg], Lenin Stadium
Outdoor stadium also used as hockey rink with natural ice during the winter. Capacity 33,000. Opened in 1961.

Gorky [Nizhny Novgorod], Avtosavoda Hockey Stadium
Outdoor stadium with artificial ice, capacity apparently 8,000.

Novosibirsk, Sibir Hockey Stadium
Outdoor stadium with artificial ice, capacity apparently 12,000.

1) CSKA Moscow

a) PERSONNEL

Gone:
Anatoli Ragulin (G, 24yo, to Krylya Sovietov Moscow)
Anatoli Drozdov (D, 24yo, to SKA Leningrad)
Leonid Volkov (F, 30yo, to SKA Kalinin [II])

New:
Yuri Glazov (F, 22yo, from SKA Leningrad)
Anatoli Frolov (F, 19yo, from Elektrostal [II])

Head coach: Anatoli Tarasov (46-47yo)
Assistant coach: Boris Kulagin (40-41yo)

Regular line-up:

F:
Veniamin Alexandrov — Alexander Almetov — Konstantin Loktev (C)
Yuri Moiseyev — Yevgeni Mishakov — Anatoli Ionov // see note 1
Anatoli Firsov — Viktor Polupanov — Vladimir Vikulov
Anatoli Frolov, Yuri Glazov

D:
Vladimir Brezhnev — Viktor Kuzkin
Igor Romishevsky — Oleg Zaitsev // see note 1
Eduard Ivanov — Alexander Ragulin
Nikolai Podkopayev

G:
Viktor Tolmachov (Nikolai Tolstikov)

Notes:
1: According to Tarasov (Совершеннолетие, 1968), these five players were employed in the 1-2-2 formation (1 stopper: Zaitsev; 2 halfbacks: Romishevsky and Mishakov; 2 forwards: Moiseyev and Ionov), though the line-ups in the papers kept listing them in the traditional manner: Romishevsky and Zaitsev as defencemen, Mishakov as center and Ionov and Moiseyev as wingers. Then from January 1966 on Mishakov is listed as RW and Ionov as center which seems to indicate they switched positions within the 1-2-2 formation (Ionov to halfback, Mishakov to forward).

Theo this is amazing, are any other seasons possible?

Actually I intend to proceed from 1966-1967 until the very end of the Soviet period, season by season. But that's obviously going to be a long-term enterprise if there ever was one.

Some observations:

CSKA Moscow:
4th title in a row after another dominant run by CSKA. The Army team is in a league of its own both in terms of depth and top end talent. Only two defeats (Oct.13 vs Gorky, Apr.3 vs Krylya Sovietov) all season. 4th all-star honour for Alexander Ragulin, 2nd for Anatoly Firsov (40 goals) and 1st for Veniamin Alexandrov.

Spartak Moscow:
A rejuvenation makes Spartak the youngest squad in the league, but the team still remains what they have been ever since Vsevolod Bobrov has taken over in early 1964: #2 in the USSR, clearly ahead of everyone not named CSKA. The key players are goaltender Viktor Zinger as well as Starshinov and the Mayorov twins at the forward position. The young forward line of Yaroslavtsev, Zimin and Alexander Yakushev (still at center, mostly) shows promise as does young defenceman Viktor Blinov who is paired with the club's #1 rearguard Alexei Makarov.

Dinamo Moscow:
Chernyshov's team manages to pull together a solid season despite of persistent injury concerns and being reduced to five or sometimes even four defencemen for considerable stretches of the year. The roster is experienced with some young blood added prior to the season. Key players are defensive anchor Vitali Davydov and forwards Vladimir Yurzinov and Alexander Striganov. The forward line centered by young Anatoli Motovilov (19), with Viktor Shilov and Alexander Sakeyev on the wings, qualifies for a taste of national team action.

Khimik Voskresensk:
The team of Tarasov's nemesis Nikolai Epshtein doesn't manage to repeat the historic success of the 1964-1965 season (when they became the first club from outside of Moscow to crack the top 3), but their defensive-minded game still earns them enough points for a very respectable 4th place. The team plays a disciplined game and takes the fewest penalties in the league. Key players are Valeri Nikitin (both used as right wing and defenceman, in line with Epshtein's preference for "universal" players) and Valeri Zubarev (goalie). The schedule is messed up by the delayed completion of the new indoor stadium in Voskresensk. Since their natural ice rink is hardly usable in March and April, Khimik are forced to play their last couple of "home games" away from home.

Lokomotiv Moscow:
The club suffers the usual talent-drain (Zimin and Migunko to Spartak Moscow), but adds some experience to the blue line (especially in Vladimir Ispolnov). Key players are the first-line forwards Viktor Yakushev, Viktor Tsyplakov and Valentin Kozin. Behind them the new line of Grishin, Safronov and Boris Mikhailov (first appearance in the top league) provides secondary scoring. A hard-working but chippy squad that takes more penalties than any other team in the league, Lokomotiv ironically end up with the same amount of points as the cleanest team, Khimik. Consistency is not Lok's forte: they beat Spartak twice and Dinamo Moscow twice, but drop points to bottom dwellers like Kiev and Novosibirsk.

Krylya Sovietov Moscow:
Overall an alright season for the small Moscow club that suffers from talent-drain (Martynyuk to Spartak) just like Lokomotiv Moscow. Notable additions: two of the three Ragulin brothers return from the Army club and Vladimir Petrov is promoted from the junior ranks. The key players for Krylya are goalgetter Vladimir Vasilyev and young goaltender Alexander Pashkov who earns a spot on the Soviet national team. The season still ends in a disappointment: the 4th place (best result since 1961) is in reach, but the team drops too many points in the last stretch of the season and ends up 6th, two points behind both Khimik and Lokomotiv.

Torpedo Gorky:
Average season for the team from Nizhny Novgorod that (as usual) finds it difficult to compete with the Moscow clubs and their superior resources. A lot of work for key players Viktor Konovalenko (G) and Vyacheslav Zhidkov (D). Offensively the team doesn't have players of a similar quality.

SKA Leningrad:
After an exceptionally strong 1964-1965 season, the second army team in the league finds itself back in lower spheres with a more familiar 8th place finish. The departure of experienced goalkeeper Stanislav Litovko doesn't help the situation. Highlight: A lucky draw allows SKA Leningrad to reach the semi-final of the USSR Cup knock-out tournament.

Dinamo Kiev:
The first of the two newly promoted teams enters the league with respectable enthusiasm: 4 points out of the first 4 games and merely a 2-4 against the almighty CSKA, not a bad start. However, over the long run neither of the two bottom dwellers is able to make up for the relative lack of talent. Their rosters are the oldest in the league (those who are talented enough for higher duties leave at an earlier age) and their above-average penalty minutes highlight their struggles.

Sibir Novosibirsk:
Two players acquired from Dinamo Moscow (one as player-coach) aren't enough to save the newly promoted and very well-supported Siberian club from finishing 10th out of 10. Same basic problems as Dinamo Kiev. However, the last place means no harm since there is no relegation in 1966. Both Kiev and Novosibirsk set their sight on the following season when the league expands to 12 clubs.

I have nothing to add here other than:

i) I salute your efforts for organizing this information for those who are interested.

ii) Torpedo Gorky might be the best team name I have ever seen.

Torpedo Gorky might be the best team name I have ever seen.

A team name doesn't get much more Soviet than "Torpedo Gorky". Gorky was the name the city of Nizhny Novgorod was given in the Soviet period in honour of writer Maxim Gorky, who was born there and was a prominent supporter of the Bolshevik movement. Torpedo on the other hand was the name of the sports society of the Automotive Industry Trade Union. In other words, the team was sponsored by the local automotive plant (avtozavod), hence the name of their stadium (Avtosavoda Stadium).

A list that explains many of the recurring team names (like Torpedo, Lokomotiv and Metallurg) can be found here.

Well done. Please keep it up. ...and Lee Mavers is a genius.

Genius and madness... Love Feelin' and Looking Glass. But my personal favourite is probably Over.

Wow!! I had always wondered about names like Lokomotiv/Metallurg etc., and my personal favourite Traktor. Thanks for linking to your old post. Easily the most informative thing I will read today.

Theo this is amazing, are any other seasons possible?

The 1973-74 season would be the most interesting to me.

It was amazingly bad season for CSKA by their standards; still the 2nd in the league, but 11 points (!) behind the champion Krylya Sov(y)etov, and with 10 losses. Noticeably the top line (Mikhailov-Petrov-Kharlamov) had a really weak season; none of them was a top 5 scorer, and their PPGAs were either around 1 or even under (Mikhailov). That was probably what mainly sunk the team. I wonder what the matter was with them that season. The 1974 World Championship was not among their greatest tournaments either; only Mikhailov had a truly good tournament, but even he didn't win any accolades.
