The team with the -37 goal differential. Lowest since 1990. I think it's fair to say there are really only 2 main candidates. The 1D and the starting goalie. Both have been arguably top 20 in their positions this year. But which one is the MVP? Or maybe it goes to one of the forwards? Here are the stats for the best players on the team..

John Carlson.
-3rd in team scoring
-1st in ATOI, 4 minutes more than 2nd best skater
-leads team in blocks with 194
-16th in points and 20th in PPG among all defenseman
-33rd in goals and 40th in GPG among all defenseman
-highest ATOI leaguewide
-8th most blocked shots leaguewide

Charlie Lindgren
-15th in sv% leaguewide
-17th in SV and SOG
- 1st in the league in SO with 6
-18th in GP for goalies
-20th in goals saved above expected per 60
-3rd in high danger unblocked shot attempt sv%

HM

Alexander Ovechkin
-1st in goals and 2nd in points on team
-highest ATOI on team for forwards
-36th in goals and 48th in GPG leaguewide

Dylan Strome
-leads team in points and 2nd in goals.
-leads team in EV points and goals

On february 9th Capitals were 12th in the eastern conference.

Ovechkin had 33 points in first 46 games (pace of 59 points) and 11 goals (pace of 20 goals in 82 games). Technically - if you do first 43 games only he had 8 goals (pace of 15 goals in 82 games).

On February 10th he had 2 points and Capitals won 2-1 vs Boston, ending a 6 game losing streak.

From February 10th on - Ovechkin finished the season with 20 goals in 33 games (50 goal pace in 82 games) and 32 points (80 point pace).

It's still Ovechkin to me. When he started scoring goals again, his team started winning games - and they made the playoffs, something I don't think anyone saw coming.

Lindgren, easily. He was really bad in the games he lost but his stats in wins are insane.

25 Wins:
1.39 GAA
.954 SV%

Given our wins were mostly 1-goal wins, he actually needed to be this good to get them here.

HM to Carlson, Ovechkin, Strome.

John Carlson by some margin, played 26 minutes of mostly tough matchups a night while scoring 52 points as a defenseman. Also 8th in the league in shots blocked and so on.

Despite his hot streak Ovechkin only had 65 points and was -22 this season. Even Strome was better with 67 points (-13). Lindgren should be the runner-up.

Good poll.

JMO, but pretty much a 4 way tie. I didn't vote.

Those 4 players all had fairly equal impacts this season IMO.

John Carlson had his best season in years. He's been really good - once again playing at his 2018 level.

Lindgren is better than his stats indicate IMO. The team in front of him is not good. If you want context, compare his outcomes to Darcy Kuemper's:

Lindgren: .911 save % and 2.67 GAA
Kuemper: .890 save % and 3.31 GAA

Strome with a career year.

Ovie producing at a 50+ goal pace for the final 36 games - not bad for a 38 year-old.

I think people are really underrating Carlson here. Dude had some of the toughest minutes in the league, it's a wonder his +/- isn't in the double digits. It's on par with the other Dmen on the team. Most of whom had played much less minutes against easier competition.

Carlson averaged 4 more minutes of ice time than the next highest on the team. Also blocked way more shots than anyone on the team, 71 more than 2nd place. Not even going into his offensive game either. At one point he was leading the team in points.

Lindgren
Strome
Ovechkin

Why so few votes for Strome?, I wonder. They obviously don't make the playoffs without any of these three or Carlson.

I refuse to answer this question as this was a whole team thing. There wasnt a real MVP this year. Everyone contributed their part.

Lindgren just edges out Strome, Ovi, and Carlson but all of them were the anchors for this team.

Can’t believe we got Strome for free — why did Chicago just let him bounce?
Washington signed him for less than the qualifying offer that Chicago didn’t make. At the time, no trade value. Didn’t fit into rebuild timeline.

Lindgren was pretty obviously their most important player every time I saw the Caps play. Strome loved to eat us up too though.
