He can make more money staying?
If he’s not in line to be a good pro, stay in college and make some NIL money. Just goes to show how much the draft is a projection for QBs after just one year as a starter going into their 2nd year. A lot can change and either drop you or raise your stock.

Transfer portal is good for kids to get a chance. But you have to make the best decision early in and not blow your transfer too early. Ewers transferred from OSU knowing he really was not going to play there. See. That he may return to UT next season. If that’s an open competition and he loses he really can’t go anywhere unless he managed to graduate in 3 years.

Same with Walker Howard. Attended LSU then transferred to Ole Miss with returning starter Dart. Didn’t win the job so can’t transfer without redshirting. In 2024. No clue if Dart is good enough to warrant going to the nfl.

This is all true, just that Max is transfering as a graduate transfer this time so he is eligible for next season.

Weigman won the starting job this year, and Henderson had a strong enough end to the year to be a viable back-up.

He just got benched for the Florida State game, so it makes sense.
Right decision for him. Just an amazing fall when you look back at the super early mock drafts from like Sept 2022 that had him as a first round pick for the 2023 draft.
A lot can change in a season.

McCall is already a 4 year starter. 40 starts and is returning to school? Already a RS SR so doing the Covid super senior thing. 6’3 220 lbs so has nfl size. Averaged 22 passes per start as a Fr and So. Went up to 28 passes per game as a Jr. this year just 7 starts and like 30 attempts per game. Thought he was supposed to be one of the higher drafted QBs this draft.

Wonder what happened as he could have gone into last draft from what I recall.

Good to get into the portal early especially for QBs. I recall last year Sam Huard waiting til after Xmas or something once Penix decided to return. He should have gone into the portal and withdrew his name if penix opted for the draft vs end up at Cal Poly vs a Power 5 school.

If there is any Truth to the speculation that Arch Manning could transfer best to not wait too long to decide. Same goes for any player but especially at QB.

DJU has been a starter since his sophomore season. 2 year starter at Clemson and one at Oregon st. 5 star recruit and not ready after 3 years as starter? But if he’s not a lock as a first rounder he and every QB better to go back and get plenty of reps so that they are as ready as can be when or if their turn is up. Purdy doesn’t get more than 1 shot as a 7th rounder. Have to show well when you get in otherwise it’s too easier/cheap cap wise for the team to move onto another QB in the draft.
Riley Leonard I get cause he was hurt for half the season.

Probably follows his coach if i had to guess. USC isn't void of talent at QB
They might have Chiles transfer there. Would make more sense. They still won’t be that good and would need to hit the transfer portal hard. A better program will have better talent around him.

Moore is the perfect example of why the new system sucks for the fans and schools but is good for the players. He went to the highest NIL bidder (Oregon) but then pulled an 11th hour switch when he realized he wasn't going to start, and then went to the highest bidder where he'd be atleast in a position to start (UCLA). UCLA really didn't get anything close to their moneys worth on this one.

It will be curious if the portal recruitment is like the HS recruitment where it's all about NIL or if he is going to look for a place that he will best develop for the next level. Neither of his hometown teams (or those in the region, OSU, PSU and ND) were willing to pay the type of NIL game with him that Oregon and UCLA were. But some of those teams, specificially UM and MSU could have QB openings depending on what McCarthy does. He may have burned bridges beyond repair at UM (plus he just wasn't that good at UCLA) and MSU is going to be a multi-year rebuild.

Seems like ND prefers the portal guarantee. From all sources, it seems like Leonard is guaranteed to go there.

Oregon was returning a starter who had 47 college starts under his belt. No chance Moore was going to start ahead of Nix. Over confident/arrogant to think otherwise.
UCLA, with DTR leaving gave him a chance.

NIL and the transfer portal does pose a very interesting question for NCAA programs and how they wish to develop the key areas of their team. Are they more into the 1-2 year experienced JR/SR who they at most will get 2 seasons out of (probably maybe just 1), or do they prefer to try to develop someone who can be their starter for 3 seasons?

At OSU, they currently have McCord, Brown, Lincoln H. on their depth chart. Is OSU better off grabbing a transfer portal QB who has a year or more under his belt at a smaller program? Would it be better to go after Leonard of Duke? Or based on their track record on new QBs that they are comfortable developing the likes of Haskins, Fields, Stroud moving forward?
Goes for USC, Michigan, Georgia, Alabama, etc.?

Is that what HS recruits should be doing? Passing up the elite programs since they are more likely to bring in experienced players via the portal and you are sitting on the bench to 2 or 3 seasons? Kids need to figure out based on the actions of the school, what their intentions are if the kid is looking for playing time by Sophomore season.
