I guess the problem is that travel becomes an issue... UM is a 2.5 hour bus trip away from UND. The next closest CW team is Regina, which would add 5.5 hours on the TCH. Any other teams means a full day on the road, or more.
NCAA DI programs have long enjoyed a pre-season exhibition game against USports teams they expect to beat, but they are extremely selective with their opponents. They want a decent game, but a game they will win, hence scheduling the NEW DI program next season. There is no sports organization more image-oriented than the NCAA.

The UND - Manitoba game has gone on for years, and is a nice geographic tradition. But, I just watched the highlights, and the Bisons are clearly two levels below UND now. If was UND, I would cancel the series as well because a game like that does nothing for either team.

The Bisons are in deep trouble, folks.

I agree that the NCAA brings in teams they can beat. I also agree that the Bisons are not a good team and probably any NCHC team could put up a half dozen goals.

It's too bad, because the game has been a tradition for a while and a nice drive from the 'Peg.

It's definitely a UND tradition but it is hard to overstate how one-sided that is. Even in the hockey community there is probably little, like nearly no awareness that the Bisons have been playing UND every year in front of a packed house at The Ralph. I'd be shocked if there were any Bison fans in the stands for that game other than the immediate family/friend circles of the players. It was a bit of a missed showcase opportunity.

Not really a missed showcase event when you are getting obliterated 10-0… as a CIS defender I would be trying to stay away from this , a good showcase event is UNB, Alberta , Calgary , SMU , etc . This is just embarrassing and makes those of us who defend CIS hockey like it’s our child look foolish lol

In fairness it wasn't always this lopsided.

Last year’s series between these teams produced bucket loads of goals. In Manitoba, UBC won 8-7 and 6-4 and in British California they won 6-4 and 5-2.

The T-irds looked really good against the Evil Monkeys, and decent against Regina. The Bisons seem to start slow every weekend, and then build. They improved as play went along last weekend, when they faced superior opponents from the AHL and NCAA. On Monday afternoon the Herd had two very good periods against the Moose. It comes down to Kolby Thornton in goal. If he’s on, they have a good shot. If not, well ... with 7 goals scored per game last year, they still would have gone 1-3.

I’ll be watch to see if Ryan Gottfried is able to play on the Bison blueline. IMO he’s their best defender and his absence at the end of their 3-2 loss to Sask and last weekend hurt them.

In CW news, UBC’s Liam Kindree was player-of-the-week last week, with 2 goals, 4 assists, and a shootout goal. Also, the CW is altering formats in most sports. For Men's and Women's Hockey, here’s what they said:
• Two divisions consisting of four and five teams each that will rotate through nine teams over six years
• Games will be played both in and out of division
• Playoff format will feature a six-team cross over
I have no clue what that means.

In Saudi Alberta this weekend, we have a pair of cross-town home-and-home series. In this Battle of Edmontown, the Family Guys host Friday and the Evil Monkeys host Saturday. I do not recall the Apes looking so sub-standard to start a season. A 4-4 pre-season and a 1-3 regular season is not awe-inspiring. That said, they did not pad their schedule with weaker opponents. Of course, these teams faced off in pre-season. Otherwise the Monkeys faced their four toughest conference opponents. Both games go at 7:00 MDT/8:00 CDT.

The Banjo-Cats have managed to pick up “loser points” in both weekends thus far. Holy Trinity’s four pre-season wins were over BCIHL teams, so let’s not get too excited. Until they show otherwise, their opponents will be thinking “we need these four points” every weekend. Both games in this series are evening games.

This Battle of Cowtown is a Thursday/Saturday affair. Bedrock U hosted Thursday, and the Bluegars host Saturday night. So now I jump straight from preview, to game report:

I was waiting for somebody to post a game story, but no luck. I saw the last half of the game and the Bluegars played a sound defensive game. The Bluegars took a 2-0 lead about 8 minutes into the 3rd period, after which they made no pretense of shooting for a hat-trick. After leading on the shot clock all night, it ended up 28-28 when the Dinos outshot them 13-4 in the 3rd. So rest those record books. Any winning streak record will not be set until 2024-25.

The Evil Monkeys had leads of 3-0 and 5-1 in a tidy victory. They needed this win, plus another on Saturday, to get back in contention. The Monkeys are 2-2-1, the Family Guys are 0-4-1. The cross-town rivalry shifts to the Clare Drake Arena on Saturday night.

This was a thorough whipping by the Banjo-Cats. I focussed on the Bisons/Birds game, but what I saw of this one was very one-sided. Even on home ice, Holy Trinity’s odds look slim. Regina is now 1-2-2 and TWU is 0-3-0.

I’d be curious what Western got up to in the early 2000’s.

EDIT - I saw a tweet saying Toronto had a 33 game streak in the ‘70’s
Just went back and looked at Western as I remember those two seasons. This was back when there were still ties...there was OT but no SO. In 2001/02, they went 22-0-2 in the regular season. In 2002/03, they went 24-0-0 in the regular season. They were not conference champions in either of these seasons, but did win the National championship is 01/02.

In terms of regular season UNDEFEATED streak, going back to 2000/01 (unbeaten in their final 8) and forward into 2003/04 (won their first game, lost their second), they went 57 consecutive regular season games without a loss.

Over that period, their longest WINNING streak was 28 games, running from the 2001/02 season to the 2003/04 season. Also over this period, they had losses in both the playoffs and exhbition games.

One other interesting fact about the 24-0-0 season; they actually lost the first 2 games that season to Lakehead, but Lakehead later forfeited both games for using an ineligible player. Western then ran the table the rest of the season. Lakehead got the last laugh, though, taking Western out 2 straight in the first round of the playoffs.

Goal: Man: Thornton (39 shots, 35 saves); UBC: Schwebius (15 shots, 13 saves)

The Herd had only five healthy defencemen available for this one. Friday’s lineup listed forward Michael King on the blueline, but that was not the case on Saturday.

By the middle of the 1st period, the Bisons had a 2-0 lead. The T-irds chipped away at Kolby Thornton and built a 4-2 lead. An empty-netter salted it away. The Bisons fall to 0-3-1.

Another road trip awaits the Bisons next weekend, to Edmontown where they will face MacEwan. Meanwhile, UBC have a good chance to start 8-0-0 when they face Holy Trinity.

This one started at 8:00 CDT, the same as the Battle of Calgary which gained my attention. In a statistical oddity, the Evil Monkeys led 5-1 after two periods and then outshot the Family Guys 23-4 in the 3rd. However, Mac scored twice early to make it somewhat interesting.

The addition of Trinity and Macewan has weakened CanadaWest. Too many easy pts for the competitive teams, like Calgary,Alberta,Mount Royal and Sask.

Actually, the bottom half of the OUA maybe more competitive?

For the Bisons this is the beginning of an 8-game stretch that could make or break their season. They go from an away series against the Family Guys, to home series against the Bluegars and Holy Trinity, and wrapping with a road trip to face the Banjo-Cats. Last year they dominated MacEwan in their only series, by 7-1 and 7-2.

The Bisons are led in scoring by defenceman Chase Hartje (2G 4A 6 points) and captain Jonny Hooker (2G 2A 4 points). But the key player is goaltender Kolby Thornton (.929 S%, 3.29 GAA). I suspect he’ll get two starts per week for as long as required.

None of the Mythical Mutants have a PPG yet, but Jordan Taupert comes closest (2G 3A 5 points in 6 games). Their goaltending has been split 3 ways, with half the playing time being covered by Thomas Davis (.920 S% and 3.58 GAA).

This series goes Friday in Edmontown and Saturday night in the Town of Bedrock. Can the Evil Monkeys finally hit their stride? Everybody’s waiting to find out. The Dinos finally lost last weekend. If the Apes lose out here, they could be in a playoff fight this year.

The Battle of Banjoland goes Friday night in Saskatown then Saturday night in Regina. The Felines look to be treading water, which for them is pretty good. Two bonus point losses and a sweep of Holy Trinity has them content, but not necessarily purring. The Canines are 4-0-0, but the wins have been over Manitoba and MacEwan.

I’m not going to stay up late on a weeknight for the west coast game stories. I saw the game from mid-2nd period onward. Holy Trinity was trying to keep it tight and did hang in there, tied 2-2 after two. It was all T-irds in the 3rd period and the outcome was not really in doubt. You might have thought the Blue Jays were playing, because this was largely a no-hitter. UBC was 1-for-1 on the PP, TWU was 0-for-3. UBC is now 7-0-0 and TWU is 0-5-0. The rematch goes Saturday at 3:00 PDT (5:00 CDT).

No game reports yet as I post. In any event, the Bisons had their chances but could never cash in. Hayden Ostir himself had three breakaways. The Family Guys got a goal-per-period and then put it away with an empty-netter, and one more for good margin. Once again, the Bisons had just the 5 defencemen dressed.

Four second period goals by the Mutts were enough for them to claim the winners share of the moonshine in this Battle of Banjoland. I didn’t follow this much because all three games started at the same time, and I focused on the Bisons first and the Battle of Alberta second.

No game reports yet from this one, either. The ending was crazy. The Evil Monkeys led 3-2 after two. Bedrock U scored three in the third to take a 5-3 lead and apparently had control of the game. But wait! The Apes went crazy and scored twice in final 3 minutes and again in OT to pick up the win. They needed this one to still be considered a contender.

CW REGULATIONS

On October 12th, the CW announced format changes, without there being a whole lot of definition behind it. Here’s what the announcement said:
Men's and Women's Hockey
• Two divisions consisting of four and five teams each that will rotate through nine teams over six years
• Games will be played both in and out of division
• Playoff format will feature a six-team cross over

So I rummaged through the playing regulations. Those only contained this year’s material. But I did find out that:

1. The regulation on providing goal judges has been deleted.

2. Teams are supposed to provide game sheets for non-conference games, yet those are only occasionally uploaded. Here is the rule:
For all non-conference and exhibition, game sheets need to be submitted by the host institution to the Canada West RIC within two (2) hour of the game finishing. If the host team is not a Canada West member, the visiting team (Canada West member) is responsible for submitting the game sheet within 16 hours of the conclusion of the game. Fines shall be assessed to offending Members for failure to adhere to the above requirement. Refer to the Association’s Finance Policy for the complete list of fines.

3. I saw the Women’s Soccer Format, which looks like a blueprint for men’s and women’s hockey. (BTW Manitoba, Winnipeg, and Brandon do not play CW men’s soccer.)
League Play
16 teams / 2 divisions / 4 regions / 14 games / 7 weeks + 2 weekends for playoffs
PACIFIC DIVISION
UVIC / UBC / TWU / UFV/ UNBC / TRU/ UBCO/ CGY
PRAIRIE DIVISION
ALB / GMU / LET/ MRU / MAN / SSK / REG / WPG
Play in-division opponents 2 times (1H-1A) for a total of 6 games. Play in-region opponents 1 time (either at Home or Away) for a total of 4 games. Interlock with other Region Divisions for additional games – 2 games from one division (either at home or away) and 2 games from the other division (either at home or away). In the following year, a team would play the other 4 teams.
During swing trip interlock play, all teams involved in the swing trip must be scheduled to play either Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday with appropriate time between games that are on consecutive days (e.g. Saturday night/Sunday morning is not appropriate for a travelling team). Due to travel situations, UNBC women’s home games can be played Friday/Sunday. Instances where a team will travel 500 KM or greater or involving normal travel of 5 hours or greater between the first and second opponent in a swing trip will require the scheduler to ensure at least 1 day off between games, unless the travelling party waives their right to this accommodation.

Rotation of which Alberta teams play in the Pacific Division:
2015 - 2016 - Alberta
2017 - 2018 - GMU
2019 - 2020 - Calgary
2021 - 2022 – MRU
2022 – Calgary
2023 – 2024 – MRU
2025 – 2026 – Alberta

My guess is that each year two or three Alberta teams will join UBC and Holy Trinity in the Pacific Division, and the other team(s) will join Regina, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba in the Prairie Division. For playoffs, maybe they’ll use the CFL format where the 4th place team in one division could cross-over to the other if warranted.

The Bisons never trailed this one until the last two minutes. They just killed a penalty and then had a disaster of a give-away in front of their own net. An empty-netter sealed the deal. It was an evening of games between Edmontown and Winnipeg teams. Thankfully, the Jets came back to beat the Greasers in overtime. Watch the highlights of that one!

CW REGULATIONS

On October 12th, the CW announced format changes, without there being a whole lot of definition behind it. Here’s what the announcement said:

So I rummaged through the playing regulations. Those only contained this year’s material. But I did find out that:

1. The regulation on providing goal judges has been deleted.

2. Teams are supposed to provide game sheets for non-conference games, yet those are only occasionally uploaded. Here is the rule:

3. I saw the Women’s Soccer Format, which looks like a blueprint for men’s and women’s hockey. (BTW Manitoba, Winnipeg, and Brandon do not play CW men’s soccer.)

Oof with the 0-6 start for the Bisons. I wasn't expecting that much but this is rough. I haven't made it out to a game yet but I'd like to see them for myself sometime soon.

As to men's soccer, how on earth is it that none of the Canada West schools in Manitoba have a program? It's weird. You would think that a big sports school like UM would have a team.

Sadly, I am not remotely surprised by the Bisons' 0-6 start, They were a bottom-end team last year, they lost their two top scorers, and did not bring in a single noteworthy recruit to replace them. The only question is whether they will manage to finish ahead of Trinity Western.
