Losing 2-1 against Washington because of a lazy clear by Compher and a bad pass by Seider was a backbreaker. We might still make it... but holy shit that game was massive and we blew it.
We were basically shut out in that game. At home. Those two defensive mistakes sucked but not scoring was the main issue. Let's hope it doesn't matter.

This is a big game for Tortorella. The Washington coach has done amazing job. So Tortorella is very motivated to win this game. The players are definitely motivated too.

That would be akin to giving up, a fireable offense in the coaching world.

If the only way you can make the playoffs is a regulation win against the team your playing against, then you do everything in your power to win in regulation. Which means if you're tied near the end of regulation you are pulling your goalie.

Winning in OT means the same as losing in regulation, you HAVE to pull your goalie in that situation or you shouldn't be making those types of decisions.

Wasn't saying they shouldn't it was more that they are saying they have to like it is a rule or something.

You don't have to shoot a buzzer beater 3 if you're down 3, you can shoot a two and hope for an and 1!

This doesn't apply though. You can still score without pulling the goalie. Again it was more the implication that it was a rule or something.

This is so wrong.

Washington has scored the least goals in the eastern conference, no team has fewer goals and 5th least in the league. In addition they are -37.

This is bad, very bad for the league.

Has it ever happened that a team with the least goals have made playoffs?

this is the first time in a while but it's happened tons of times before, there's even been times where both Conferences had their team with the least goals scored make the Playoffs, and there's been times where that has happened multiple years in a row

the most recent couple:

the Panthers tied for the least goals in the East in 2011-12 and not only made the Playoffs but won their division

Boston had the least goals in the East in 2009-10 and made the Playoffs

you have to go back to the 90s to find more but there's been other semi recent teams that were close to the least too including a straight up Cup winner in the Kings having the 3rd least goals in the West in 2013-14

Very unfortunate ending for the season, i thought Wings had some potential to upset anyone in playoffs. Another very unfortunate thing about not making the playoffs is that i think Kane doesnt sign in Detroit again, one of my favorite players of all time but i understand if he wants to go to a place that has better chance for the cup,

There are some examples when it was 6 or 12 teams in the league. But now it is 16 teams in the conference and 8 teams make it and 8 team don't. Their record with -37 and the least goals in the entire conference is something.

San Jose at season 1994-95 has been the worse than this Caps team. It was 26-team league.

-32 in 48 games (-54 goal pace)

I feel like every year we talk about how the point scale doesn't perfectly gel with what we perceive the valuation should be. The loser point continues to confuse me in the relative value to a win. The Islanders won't crack 40 wins even with a win tonight, meaning their best case win % is 0.476. They are getting in because they were good enough at being bad to lose 16 times in overtime. I've always struggled with the notion that losing at any point is worth something, but we still deal with it every year.

That said, typically you don't see a huge shakeup when you screw with point calculations. Most scenarios have the Wings out, unless the format is rewarding total wins, which it still feels like we are missing that component somehow. The Wings have one more win, 1 fewer loss, scored 58 more goals and allowed only 17 more than the Caps. Somehow they end up tied in points, and the Wings get punished for winning their games in extra time, despite winning one more game in total.

For the sake of other standings formats.

This is what happens when you have to rely on other teams to control your destiny.

One final update from the site that doesn't know how tiebreakers work.

A system in which a team with more wins stays home over a team with less wins is not one I’m in favor of. The league itself shows how they don’t value winning in OT.

Still don’t get RW over ROW as the tiebreaker of choice. Shouldn’t matter when you won, just that you won.

E: all it shows me is the league thinks OT and shootouts are a joke too because a win means less if it occurs then, above and beyond just the losing team accruing a point too.
