Prediction now: Crookshank is making the team out of training camp.

You'll see I'm right in 3 weeks.

It will be an interesting story to follow but I think he has what it takes and especially if Formenton isn't around.

I still don't know why we brought back Gambrell. He's starting to stick out like a sore thumb.

Ottawa
Robillard couldnt get an invite but Valade and Wakely at least were noticeable enough to get an invite, good luck to them to maybe get on the radar.

Mann said crookshank is starting in Belleville. I’m guessing he’s call up 1 or 2 with sokolov on the front end

Weird thing to say before training camp even starts, but whatever. You'd think they'd be encouraging competition but this seems to do the opposite.

Crookshank's case is a bit unique. He missed an entire season so the organization probably wants him playing 16-20 minutes a night in an offensive role, at least for a while, instead of the 6-9 he'd get on Ottawa's 4th line if he made the team. Especially since LW is a position where we have a lot of depth.

Wouldn't be surprised to see him make things more interesting by game 15-20 though.

Sure, I get that, but frankly injuries happen, so who knows what depth we'll have by opening night. I certainly see him as a better fit on the third than say Kelly, if Motte gets hurt, there's a pretty clear opening, or heck if he shows well in training camp, why not try him on the third for a bit. It just seems like we're jumping the gun with little to no real upside. I know he's a long shot, but I'd like him going to camp with the goal of making the team, why throw cold water on that at this stage?

Why would he be a better fit than Kelly on the 3rd line, at this stage? Kelly played a regular shift in the NHL last year and even had some minor flashes of offense (6 pts in his last 14 games).

Crookshank has played 19 pro games, total.

The "best players will make the team" is nothing more than a hollow soundbite that comes out of coaches and GMs at the start of camp. And as Methot has pointed out on his podcast, players absolutely know it coming in. When you factor in veterans and contracts, there is usually 1, at most 2, spots open for real competition. Crookshank, I bet, is pretty certain he'll be in Belleville in October, barring injuries.

Teams that want to win put there best option on the ice, that's not hollow, its just that coaches and fans don't always agree on what gives a team a better chance to win. You can look at the roster and expect that there's no room, but as I said, one injury changes everything.

Kelly is an NHL player, but frankly he isn't a third liner on a good team, a hot streak to end the season aside, he has 170 pro games under his belt that inform you on what to expect. I see Crookshank as having the skillset to be that, he might not ever pan out, but his skill set is better suited imo than Kelly's when it comes to third line mins. If he isn't good enough then he doesn't make the team, simple as that, but to me he's more of a middle six guy should he ever pan out, while Kelly is at best a guy that will move up to a third when injuries happen. Just an opinion

Will Formenton and Batherson be held out of media day. I don’t want them to get grilled by reporters about the hockey Canada scandal.

Injuries can change things, yes. And I think the correct way to phrase it would be "teams that want to win put their best options on the ice after factoring in contracts and waiver exemption status".

In many cases, teams do not ice their "best" players in game 1, especially when it comes to young players on ELCs. "Player A outplayed Player B in camp, but Player A is waiver exempt and Player B isn't, and we think we'll need the depth that Player B provides over the slog of an 82 game season, so Player B will make the game 1 roster." That happens all the time, on every team.

And with that said, our LW is crowded: Tkachuk, DeBrincat, Formenton (potentially at some point), Motte, Kelly, Greig, Sokolov, Crookshank. I have no problem with the team being up front with the most likely plan, directly to the player or in the media.

I think it would be a little more hazy without the motte signing. But I I think our spots upfront are essentially locked down

Yeah, Motte signing of Formenton situation resolved favourably, either way, that left side becomes a log jam, but if Crookshank outplays them, maybe you waive a guy like Gambrell instead and play one of Motte or Kelly as the 4th line center.

It just doesn't make sense to me to close doors, not that they wouldn't reevaluate if Crookshank blows the doors off, but my point is even if you fully expect him to start in the AHL, why bother saying it before camp even starts.
