Regarding the hosting duties of the Memorial Cup, QMJHL president Gilles Courteau said on “31 thoughts” today that since this year was the OHL’s turn to host, despite there not being a tourney, the CHL will continue with it’s regular rotation. He said the Q will host next year and the Dub the year after.

As a fan of an OHL team, I think this is hugely unfair to our league. Because of Covid, and the 100th anniversary of the Memorial Cup, the OHL will have to wait until the 23-24 season to host again.

The last time the OHL hosted was 2017 (Windsor). That’s a lot of time between hosting opportunities. I think that’s highly unfair considering the Q and Dub will have hosted twice each in between (provided the tourney happens going forward).

I think the CHL should allow the OHL to host next year.

Courteau also said that Kelowna, the supposed 2020 host, was given the option to host the 2021 tourney at the time of the cancellation last spring. Kelowna deferred so it went to the OHL.

Why can’t the OHL be given the same opportunity that Kelowna was given last spring?

IF the Memorial Cup returns in 2022, it should be the OHL who's given the chance to host. Start where you left off, make it simple all around.

I'm not too sure there are any OHL teams at this stage willing to put together an actual serious bid.

Consider this, after a year off and not playing two staraight playoffs, what teams would be confident enough to spend the type of $$$ required to not only present a bid but be a serious contender? Keep in mind that bids would probably be late fall, maybe as late as early new year. If the league starts late, teams will essentially have a couple months of play to pull together a bid.

I think a Memorial Cup in the OHL would be a bit of a shit show this season.

The QMJHL will at least have a good feel for projecting team performances.

WHL lost their shot to host in 2020 as well, at this point they might as well just continue with the regular rotation.

If that were the case, itd be in the Whl. They were supposed to host in 2020 but it got cancelled and moved to the OHL the next year (which also obviously got cancelled). So if the "it should be in the league who was supposed to have it next before covid ruined everything" argument is being used, it should be in the WHL

Any further info on when the host city should be announced? I was sure I read a couple months ago that it was supposed to be announced the week of September 6 (last week).

Are they still looking at Oshawa and SSM? Or is it skipping the OHL and staying on rotation?

Supposing there is a Memorial Cup in 2022 it's not going to really be the Memorial Cup in experience anyway. I don't think the allure to host will be there without the fanfare that usually comes with it.
Side note it would be sweet for the Rangers to have one last Memorial Cup in the Aud before they build that new rink that is starting to be talked about.
Unlike the Ice House I will be sad to see the Aud go.

So next time OHL hosts will be 2024? Sudbury could have a good team with Goyette and Musty. Wonder if they would bid.

Basically the CHL kept the rotation moving and it will be in the QMJHL for 2022. I believe Quebec and Saint John were the only cities that applied.

Don't think that arena is up to Mem Cup hosting standards. Unless there's been big upgrades since I was there in the 2017 playoffs? You need a certain amount of boxes and they didn't have that when I was there

If the KED (Kingsway Entertainment District) haters would disappear for a while, Sudbury might have one of the best rink facilities / casino / surrounding entertainment / restaurant and hotel districts in the OHL.
Facility + potential team = strong bid. Hopefully, it all works out for them. It would be nice to see the cup in the North.

There was lots of Bud Gardens haters too. Build it and the haters will forget what they were mad about...

some Sudburians that will have to pay for it think it’s too costly, if not just an opportunity cost to fill in muskeg adjacent to a landfill site when there is developed commercial properties under utilized. Just because the wolves owner’s family has industrial property about 500 m as the crow flies from the proposed site does not make it a good idea for greater Sudbury. Keep in mind the population was 165200 in 1996, now 157850 in 2021.
Niagara has a newer arena (downtown St. Catherines) nearby casino, ‘the falls’; and should be an excellent team at that time.
