It's gotta be Slaf for me.

I've only seen Hutson during this dev. camp and admittedly, he's been very very good...is his potential really as high as people are making it out to be? What about his floor? My understanding is he might be a boom or bust type kid.

His floor is AHL PP guy. Like he either can defend at the NHL level or he can't.

Seeing as we temporarily shut down the Free Agent thread, the choice is obviously Slaf.

His ceiling is not far off of Quinn Hughes, his floor is Marc-Andre Bergeron. Definition of a boom/bust pick.

Slaf is #1 here.

How is Lane Hutson even an option yet and Harris, Xhekaj, Struble, Mailloux, Heineman etc. aren't?

I liked the pick where got him but he has zero chance of being a good defender. He has some exciting PP1 upside if we can hide him on the 3rd pairing or as a 7th D where we dress 11 forwards. It is a fun pick and hopefully he can grow a little but he should not be any higher than 15-20 on this list imo.

I just noticed that he is even getting votes as our top prospect over Slaf and Guhle lol. Come on people, this is the Montreal Canadiens board, not the Ducks or Coyotes or some other place where fans know nothing about the game.

The best way to rate prospects is to ask yourself what their trade value is......Lane Hutson does not hold much value and who knows how far he slips if we don't pick him. Can anyone here say with a straight face that another GM would give up more for Hutson than Slaf or Guhle?

Even though I think he tops out as a third-line forward who will be deployed on the power play, Slafkovsky.

Add Mailloux.

His floor is bust and a defenceman's potential can not be considered that high when they will never be better than a below average defender.

His upside is a PP specialist.

What if he can be average (or better than) defensively?

I would say that is nearly impossible given his size. He even admitted that he had to learn to be less aggressive in his close-offs, this is because he is just too weak to close guys off at entry without getting beat. Much like Mete he would then just escort guys to the outside but consistently concede possession in the D zone. Once possession is established all he can do is try and fill lanes with his little body and short reach which is also far from ideal as he will be ineffective at creating and winning puck battles in the corners and in front of the net.

I would say that if we paired him with a great partner and made sure that he was on the ice with a big center then that would help to mitigate the enormous size/strength disadvantage that he will be up against.

There is no denying that he is incredibly fun to watch with the puck on his stick and if he can somehow grow a little more and put on 30 lbs without losing some of his agility then we may really have something. Like I said, I was happy with the pick where we took him but would have hated it at 33.

I am extremely curious to see how this plays out as he would easily be the smallest D in the league. The kid is clearly very smart so I am going to sit back and see if he can figure out a way to make this work. Personally I would consider using him as a 7th D while dressing 11 forwards and taking the occasional shift on the 4th line or maybe on a top line depending on the situation. I think it is important to have an open mind with a talent like this just like it took an open mind to draft him. I see something of a Kordell Stewart/Deion Sanders opportunity with Hutson, let's see if MSL and company see the same.

Guhle for me. Quite comfortably, too.

HF's obsession with the newest, shiniest toys remains unmatched.

I loved the Hutson pick at 62, but let's face it: Barring an amazing growth spurt hes not going to be able to defend effectively in the NHL.

...I've watched quite a bit of video on Slafkovsky and the kid does impress me, but they are still limited samplings...the best prospect we have that I've actually seen a lot of is Guhle and I am extremely excited to see this kid up with the Big Club...Guhle for me without question...
