SABRES SIGN CAMPBELL, SUBBAN TO 3-YEAR CONTRACTS

July 13, 2022

BUFFALO, NY - The Buffalo Sabres announced today that the team has agreed to terms with goaltender Jack Campbell and defenseman PK Subban on three-year deals.

Campbell (6' 3", 207 lbs, 01.09.1992) joins the Sabres on a three-year contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $6 million. Prior to coming to Buffalo, Campbell spent parts of eight seasons with the Dallas Stars, Los Angeles Kings, and Toronto Maple Leafs, amassing a 2.53 Goals Against Average and a .916 Save Percentage in 135 career NHL games. The Port Huron, Michigan native was selected in the first round, eleventh overall by the Stars in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Subban (6' 0", 210 lbs, 05.13.1989) comes to Buffalo on a three-year contract with an average annual value of $4 million. Subban will be entering his 14th NHL season in 2022-23, following a seven-year stint with the Montreal Canadiens and three years each with the Nashville Predators and, most recently, the New Jersey Devils. In 834 NHL games, Subban has tallied 115 goals and 352 assists for 467 points, along with 905 penalty minutes. The Toronto, Ontario native was selected in the second round, forty-third overall by the Canadiens in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.

Subban's brother, Malcolm, was acquired by the Sabres last fall and recently signed an extension with the team.

"We are thrilled to bring in two excellent players in Jack and PK," said the Sabres GM. "Jack will provide us with the stability in net we need to help this team compete for a playoff spot this season, and PK will provide grit and a much-needed veteran presence on our blueline to help our young defensemen develop."

Ducks final update. This team comes at 1,914,367 above the cap floor, with many short term vets who can be sold off moving towards the deadline (JVR, Edler, Shattenkirk, Henrique, Holl). Next year will bring new extensions for Zegras and Terry, along with a better understanding of the long term needs of the team. Ultimately looking at another early pick in 2023, but feeling like the young players have been properly insulated with veteran help.

It was especially important to get some reliable help on the back end, where there is obviously a big crater left by Lindholm and Manson (also traded Fowler). Ferraro and stop gaps like Edler and Holl will help fill those minutes for now, but long term hopes are on the plethora of young D to yield some top four help. Drysdale, Broberg, Zellweger, Bichsel, Korczak, Helleson, Thrun, Lacombe, Rinzel, Moore - a lot to dream on there.

Really happy to land Marchment and Paul as young veterans for this forward group. Some big bodies with the ability to play along side these skilled playmakers.

Cap number is $69M while the real dollar cost is about $60M.

Managed to get an extra and likely high 1st for the '23 draft and two former 1st for Cychrun.

As for the draft, you hope Jiricek is a stud, one of the other 1sts is at least decent and then maybe two of the picks 2nd round and below work out.

1/3 David Jiricek, RHD, Plzen (Czech Extraliga)
1/27 Jimmy Snuggerud, RW, USA NTDP (USHL)

Great job as always @My Cozen Dylan

Just for kicks he was an internal discussion that got leaked in Dallas.

When I was presented with the opportunity as GM of the Stars, I didn’t realize just how exciting the pool of recent draft picks was. With the addition of Alex Steeves, Roni Hirvonen, and Jake Neighbours, we know we have one of the strongest groups in the league. While it was difficult to part with a gifted young player like Ty, we felt adding the skills and physicality of Max Comtois was a needed move.

John Klingberg is a great player and better man. He has been integral to Dallas’s success for the past 8 years. We wish him only the best. While he can’t be replaced, acquiring a rising talent like Jordan Spence gives our blue line much needed skill.

With the moves we made this offseason, we intend to be in the playoff picture again this year.

However, many of you have heard that information presented at the owners’ meeting leaked to the press. I will say that our 3-year plan is to be Cup contenders for the last half of this decade. While it is almost impossible to predict the development of young players, trade opportunities that may arise, or availability of free agents, I would be comfortable with the hypothetical Stars lineup that was discussed.

Robertson—Hintz—Bourque
Comtois—Johnston—Stankoven
Neighbours—Peterson/Hirvonen—Roulette/Arcuri/Martino
Steeves—Faksa—Brumel

Heiskanen—?
Lindell—Spence
Harley—Salin
