I'd thought I'd finalized my personal board, and then the Black Book dropped. I might still change a few of these leading up to the draft, but here's where I'm sitting right now:

I know this is a ranking, and not how you think the draft will actually go, because of need, but: Damn I would love it if we could get Beniers at 6.

Not gonna happen though, not even close.

Tier 1 are the guys that I think combine high ceilings and high floors. Tier 2 are guys who are more boom/bust, but I'm giving weight to how high I think their potential is. Tier 3 are guys I like a lot who I have questions about their ceiling not so much their floor. Tier 3 are guys that I see as high upside or low risk, but usually not both. Tier 4 are those who I think would be really interesting pieces to add to our system!

I'd thought I'd finalized my personal board, and then the Black Book dropped. I might still change a few of these leading up to the draft, but here's where I'm sitting right now:

You get double props on the video links. Could you do it earlier next draft, lol?

All joking aside, good time saver.

I love that you opted for "blah blah blah" only to rank Pinelli at an arbitrary 23.
I keep hearing that Pinelli is good , but he needs improve his skating. I thought he was one of the best on Canada team at this aspect of the game. With Coronato And Svechkov most likely gonna be gone I choose Penelli as the best available center for Red Wings

Any consideration to having Guenther higher? What are the drawbacks in your eyes?

I'll update this post later with my previous years lists: 2020. As always my list is based off of my own simple model and some limited viewings of players. I think this draft has a ton of interesting players spread throughout the draft, but I'm wary of the USHL crop this season. The average goals per game was almost 0.5 goals per game above previous seasons and it's something to keep in mind when looking at the offensive totals from that league.

My list is mostly tier based where players within a tier are interchangeable and even those a tier above or below could be swapped.

Edit: Forgot Dylan Duke, would likely have him in the 7th tier.

A couple notes from my list:

  • I think it's likely that we get a player in my 1st tier with our pick. I think all of those in the top tier have clear top 6/Top 4 upside and I really think Eklund would be my choice at 6 should he fall.
  • I think I'm lower on Edvinsson then most. I don't see where the offensive value will come from with him. He's never really been a big offensive play driver and while pairing him with Seider would be interesting I think we can get someone with almost as much upside in Olsson later in the draft.
  • I believe I'm much higher on Zellweger & Olsson than most. Zellweger has everything you'd want in a smaller defenceman and he has the numbers to back up his game. He has been rising up boards and I think he's taken earlier now than before the U18s.
  • Olsson on the other hand is a bit of gamble. He was excellent last year in his DY-1 season and while he was overmatched this year in the SHL he compared favorable to Brodin & Klefbom. He's not going to wow you with his play, but I really like his steady game and feel like he's been overlooked this year.
  • Stankoven is someone that may suffer from the "Too Short" syndrome and fall too far. He has a real chance to play C at the next level, he's already fantastic at draws as an 18 year old, and he brings an excellent mix of offence/play driving. If he was 2 or 3 inches taller he'd be in the top 10 for me.
  • The two top Finns imo are Koivunen and Salminen. Both have had late seasons pushes up a lot of rankings and I think both have solid middle 6 upside. Koivunen is a jack of all trades with excellent play driving numbers and Salminen is somehow flying under the radar as a 6'3 center. Salminen does have some skating issues, but I think those can be worked on and improved.
  • This year has a good mix of overagers with Ethan Cardwell being the best. He should've bene drafted last year, but he's a good bet to be the first overager off the board as he dominated the Swedish 3rd tier this season. As well you have Michael Gut, dominated the Czech 2;Simon Knak, who did extremely well in the WHL; and Miguel Tourigny, an all offensive dman, as others to look out for. I think any of these players could be great value from the 3rd and on, but I'd expect them to be available into the 7th.
  • I have a real issue with Zach Dean, Brennan Othmann, Matthew Knies, Matthew Samoskevich, Aleksi Heimosalmi, Samu Tuomaala, & Jack Peart. They're all talked as potential top 60 picks, but they do not have the production to back up those rankings. I think once you get outside of the top 60 or 75 players arguments can be made, but anything before that is a little rich for me. Heimosalmi and Dean are 2 players I'm especially concerned about it and would stay away from in the top 90 picks.

How does Edvinsson exist in his own tier in your eyes? It feels odd to see someone in a tier of their own when it’s not like a Matthews, McDavid caliber prospect at the very top that might deserve that respect.

Just curious how you arrived here because I find it intriguing

I don't dislike him, but I am not overly excited by him either. At the end of the day I think he will be a solid complimentary top 6 NHL winger. I actually think he is the safest forward of the lot even though I think his skating is a little overrated. I am probably holding the U-18 against him too much. Also, someone has to give if you want to move someone up and I do like those three in the third tier materially more.

I think of it in relative terms, not so much absolute terms. I would take all three of the top three above Edvinsson and I would absolutely take Edvinsson above all three in the third tier. Within the third tier I see these guys as pretty damn interchangeable. Preferences are small and change daily but I would not consider taking any over Edvinsson. Rank order may communicate the same general concept, but I am not sure it illustrates how close the players actually are to one another.

Consider it a measurement of preference.

COVID produced the best USHL season ever. While the NDTP was arguably down, you had an influx of CHL players and several that returned (or never left) when their NCAA seasons were cancelled. Overall that was as strong a league as I have ever seen.

It's also in part because the Chicago Steel are becoming the pre-eminent USHL development team. On the Eliteprospects podcast they've interviewed members of the Steel's management and discussed at length how great their development program is.

The USHL isn't just a one or two league team anymore feeding the NCAA. They've really started to develop a lot of really good players on their own. Look at the drafts from 2014 to 2020 and see how many USHL players were in the first 2 rounds when compared to the previous 7 year span.

I'm not trying to suggest that the league was watered down, just that the scoring was much higher than in previous years. The average number of ES goals per game from 2013 to 2019 was 4.5 while in the 2021 season it was 5.3. That's a sizeable increase and it's an important piece of context to consider when players had record breaking seasons. I believe players like Coronato/Pastujov compare pretty well with Colangelo/Brisson from last year, where they're more 20-40 type of picks, and not in the 5-15 range like I've seen some outlets suggest.

Behind on this versus past years, I have some tiers at work, but I have more to sort through and I am reading through the Black Book and other areas to see how different I am. Not surprising to me given the year but I feel like I am going to be kind of different than some, I think this was going to be a strange class kind of regardless, but having the weird year has made this a lot different for sure.

Excited to see everyone's list. I am committed to this as a top 6

1.) Luke Hughes
2.) Owen Power
3.) Dylan Guenther
4.) Simon Edvinsson
5.) Matt Beniers
6.) Kent Johnson

I will make sure to edit it. But this is one of my favorite threads every year.
