NCAA tables proposal to expand women's hockey tournament

NCAA Division I Competition Oversight Committee did not act on a plan to expand the National Collegiate Women's Hockey Tournament from eight to 10 teams.

Written By: Matt Wellens | 3:03 pm, Sep. 10, 2021

... The NCAA women’s hockey championship has been an eight-team tournament since 2005 when the Hockey East postseason champion began receiving an automatic bid along with the postseason champions of the WCHA and ECAC. College Hockey America began receiving an automatic bid in 2015. It was a four-team tournament during its first four years from 2001-2004.

The proposal, which was advanced to the competition oversight committee by the NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey Committee, sought to expand the tournament from eight to 10 teams right away starting with the 2021-22 season in anticipation of the New England Women’s Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) postseason champion receiving a possible auto bid starting with the 2022-23 season. That would push the national women’s hockey tournament over the NCAA threshold for automatic berths.

Bylaws mandate a national tournament needs at least a 50-50 split between automatic bids and at-large bids for a national tournament, which is where the current eight-team tournament stands. ...

Fenton Addresses Various Issues at NCHC Media Day

by Jordan McAlpine/CHN Reporter

ST. PAUL, Minn. — In a season that was mostly played in empty arenas and started with three weeks in a bubble, NCHC Commissioner Josh Fenton announced during his annual state of the conference Thursday that the 2020-21 year will “conclude in a surplus position.” Much of that is thanks to the revenue brought in by NCHC.TV, he said, and the success of the Frozen Faceoff in Grand Forks.

However, the bigger story people are tracking in these times is vaccination rates. According to Fenton, the rate for players among conference teams is between 90 and 100 percent. Fenton said there will be a call next Tuesday among NCHC athletic directors to determine the protocols for games that are impacted by COVID-19 outbreaks this season. Last season, games got re-scheduled. This season, could lead to forfeits.

Also of note, the NCHC Frozen Faceoff will no longer feature a third-place consolation game. Part of that is because of a schedule conflict this year, but expect it to remain that way going forward. The NCHC was the only league still with a consolation game in its conference tournament. ...

It usually does, but there do seem to be a lot of really solid rosters across all conferences this year. My Minutemen certainly have their work cut out for them, if they are to repeat as champions.
I figured that 5th-year waivers would contribute significantly to the talent base across the board. What I wonder is whether that extraordinary situation will result in a talent void in the subsequent DI seasons on both the men's & women's sides, as promising first year college players are kept off of 2021-22 rosters by 2nd year seniors/graduate-level returnees and have to pursue junior hockey paths or even non-hockey careers. I'd like to see an intelligent study of the impacts of this hopefully rare occasion.

I watched the second of a pair of non-conference season opening weekend games between Long Island U & Penn State this evening. ... Early days of 2021-22 hockey, but LIU was clearly overmatched by the Nittany Lions. In addition to a strong returning cast, P/S has three freshmen-to-watch on their roster this year.
  • Winger Danny Dzhaniyev, a very small & very fast skater with a quick release and non-stop offensive drive. It will be interesting to see how he fares against their larger & more skilled B1G opponents.
  • Left winger Ryan Kirwan, a 6'2" 195 lb-er who uses his size well while bringing a scoring touch, which should make him effective if he gets decent ice time.
  • D-man Simon Mack, who plays well positionally & pinches effectively while having the skills to contribute to his team's offense.
On the Sharks' side the only noteworthy individual performance tonight IMO was backup goalie Vinnie Purpura, who played the 3rd period in relief of UAA senior transfer Kris Carlson and made a few mind-boggling saves on Penn State shooters using his 6'6" frame & athleticism. Kudos also to LIU as a team, who skillfully and fearlessly blocked in the neighborhood of 50 shots while the Lions managed to get about that many shots on net in their 5-2 victory to sweep the weekend. Gonna be a LOT of bruises on that bus back to Lon-Gisland. :ha:

New Season Primer / Things to Watch, 2021-22

by Avash Kalra/Senior Writer

College hockey has always produced a sort of characteristic controlled chaos. And of course, navigating the global COVID-19 pandemic last season to crown, ultimately, a national champion in Massachusetts, was not without chaos along the way, either — starting with several teams opting not to play the season at all and ending with others (Michigan, Notre Dame) unable to play tournament games at the last minute.

Still, on the whole, the season was a successful one — setting the stage in many ways for what will hopefully be a more normal 2021-22 season (whatever normal is, at this point). Unlike the start of last season, safe and effective vaccines are now available to all. Fans will return to buildings across the country. And six full conferences are back, including a complete ECAC and a new-look CCHA that welcomes St. Thomas to the Division I level. There are also three independent programs, including Long Island playing its season.

The season begins Saturday night with a slate of nonconference games. And it'll all lead to the 2022 Frozen Four in Boston in April — with plenty of chaos, certainly, along the way. ...
