I think Red Wings could compete for Stanley cup just in 2 years
Bert-larkin-Mantha Larkin 26 ,Mantha 27
Fabbri-Veleno-Zadina . Zadina 22
#4pick-Rasmussen-Svechnikov
Helm-Ehn-Gleny
Hope it's Krug-Hronek
DD-Seider
Nemeth-McIsaak
Just find good free agent goaltender, defenseman and coach.
This team could rock in the right condition
I prefer Raymond at this draft because he has higher ceiling, but not going to complain about Rossi or Perfetti
Also Mastersemone had very successful season and Johansson in SHL

A Krug-Hronek top pair would get their teeth kicked in & they'd be hemmed in the Dzone often. DDK-FH & TK-MS works better, but would be lucky to be a playoff team Top4, much less "compete for a Cup in '21-'22". Those are (2) 2nd pairings.

A lot of assumptions:

4OA is a F
4OA will be NHL ready
4OA will be a W
McIsaac is ready & plays his offside.
Nemeth is resigned.
DDK isn't claimed by SEA (if left unprotected) or traded.
Krug signs here.
Veleno will be a 2C & ready to be by '21.
Svech makes it as an NHL'er/overcomes injuries.
Helm is resigned?? why?
LGD on wing vs. Ehn (AHL fodder as of now)?
LGD isn't traded @TDL '20-'21.
Abby & Nielsen don't rebound & have great 30pt+ seasons...

Nothing about that roster says Cup, I doubt that lineup even makes the playoffs.

Stevie isn't going to sign Krug and Nemeth is TDL trade bait this coming season as is Helm and Backhand Luke. Smith, Brome, and Timashov will be on the roster instead.

That looks more like non-playoff roster. I have the wings entering playoffs at 2024-2025 earliest.

I think we see a lot more roster turnover than what is being proposed. Stevie is going to sell some of these guys.

Also if you sign Krug I think it is to play him with Seider long term. DK and Hronek can be together, until Seattle takes DK in the expansion draft.

2020-2021: Hopefully sign Krug, draft a forward at 4, insert some prospects and see inceased roles from other young guys. This team will be at or near the bottom of the standings again.

2021-2022: Increased growth from within, maybe sign another UFA who sees the ship is heading in the right direction. Big improvement, but still not a playoff team.

2022-2023: Here is where I believe we can start to talk about playoffs, and maybe could sneak in, but by no means are they realistic contenders yet.

If:
- Zadina and Seider hit their potential
- 2020 and 2021 picks look like homeruns who are contributing
- A competant goalie is found
- One of Veleno or Rasmussen establish themselves as a #2/3 C tweener (at minimum)
- One of the other D prospects establishes a top 4 presence

Then Yzerman can work around the edges of a solid team. That's a LOT that needs to break right and even then, contender feels like a stretch because the elite talent really isn't there.

Svech Larkin Mantha
Bertuzzi Fabbri Zadina
Galchenyuk Haula Timashov
Filppula Glendening Erne
(Abdelkader/Nielsen)

Dekeyser Seider -
Nemeth Hronek
Cholowski Braun
Biega

Bernier/Talbot

Line 1- Larkin and Mantha drive. Svech gets a shot to prove himself, works the boards, going to the net.
Line 2- The experiment. Bert-Fabbri showed some chemistry. Fabbri wants to be a C. Zadina gives them some scoring/skill. I worry a bit this line doesn't really skate that well or have much size, but I'm counting on IQ/Skill to carry the day.
Line 3- Bunch of new guys with some ability.
Line 4- Checking Line

D 1-Pairing- Seider learns alongside our most competent two-way defenseman. Eventually, would like to see Seider paired with an offensive guy, but for now, learning.
D 2-Pairing - Nemeth backs up Hronek.
D 2-Pairing - Braun gives Cholo a study veteran to play with.

Goalie-Talbot will be better than Howard. That alone buys us 10-15 points.

Braun 2x2.6
Haula 3x3.2
Talbot 2x3.2
Mantha 5x5.8
Bert 4x4.75
Galchenyuk 1x2.4
Helm traded, $1.8M absorbed.

$62,083,000 cap hit
$15,316,542 cap space.
UFAs who could be traded for picks during the season at the deadline.
Glendening. Filppula. Nemeth. Braun. Bernier, Galchenyuk.

I think this lineup keeps us near the bottom of the league. But maybe not dead last. And definitely not a trainwreck like last year.

True.
But I'm trying to get three lines of hockey players.
Last year we had one line.

What looks better to you on Line 3?

Rasmussen - Veleno - Zadina has looked good since first put together at Traverse city.

There's your offensive 3rd line.

Svechnikov - Larkin - Mantha
4th overall - Fabbri - Bertuzzi

Give them a year to get ready.
Neither guy tore up the AHL and proved they belonged.

Besides, in that prospect tournament, wasn't it Smith on their wing? And despite all their points, weren't they minus players who hemorrhaged goals against?

I think fans have explored a number of ways, like in your example, that the Wings could seriously compete for a playoff spot again fast if they were strategic about cap hit and free-agent signings. So, we could do that, but right now, obviously, it's more of a matter of building for long-term competitiveness.

I don't think it will take Stevie very much longer though. We're kinda counting chickens before they hatch at this point, but the defense is starting to seem exciting for the first time since Lidstrom retired. I think we already have some decent forwards that can be built around. Of course, we also need a goalie. However, not all of those needed pieces have to be our draftees. Therefore, it wont necessarily take long, but we still do need to draft a perpetual all-star or two before we're ready.

We recently entered a new phase of the rebuild where we are trading away players who were drafted by us during the rebuild for the rebuild. So, my impression is that we are getting toward the end. I mean, we're running out of old guys who are "tradeable" and we are running out of younger players who we want to trade. We've also got big irresponsible contracts getting close to coming off the books soon or that we can buy out. I think we're almost there.

Prospect Tourney game against the Hawks Toews line that Veleno's line had trouble with, but I don't remember if that was '18-'19 or this season.

this only goes back for '19-'20 though:

It'll be pretty interesting watching Drysdale play wing, but wouldn't he play on the right side?

I'm talking about the prospect tournament
Detroit Red Wings Training Camp - on Pointstreak Sports Technologies
Veleno, for example leads the tournament in scoring, going 7-1-8 but ends up +/- 0.
Zadina goes 0-5-5 but -2.

Impressive, 6 out of top 15 are Wings prospects, including 4 of top 5. Too bad Kuffner didn't put it together after tying for lead in pts. That may come back to haunt us, but Hirose looked better in the season & that's not saying much at all as Taro was mostly crap.

Surprised how many highly touted names on that list: Kiviranta, Fox, Kravtsov, Texier, Robertson, Dellandrea.

He's 33.
I'm proposing a two-year deal. You can decide from there.
I see goalies as too volatile & hate overpaying/overterming them. 10% of $81.5M b/w 2 goalies is the most I'd care to spend if I were a contending teams GM. Starter (50-55gp), backup (27-32gp)

If we miss out on Lehner, Markstrom then I'd sign Murray in '21 if he makes it to UFA. I don't wanna be in a bidding war for a G, unless they're prime D.Hasek.

Meanwhile just get a cheap backup, any of these on short term 1-2yr max...Talbot, Griess, Khudobin ($1M extra for '20 PO performance ?), C.Anderson?.

That's about my speed right now.
Overspending/committing on a goalie right now seems crazy.
Even a potential goalie of the future I'd balk at. I just hate the idea of potentially ruining a goalie with this team.

This team isn't going anywhere near the SCF let alone winning it with Larkin as the #1 center and the plugs that still make up half that roster. That teams is a best a bubble team.
