Just listened to SinBinVegas's Periscope rant about how the personnel changes and behind the scenes treatment of players and staff totally wrecked the team from a performance, potential and personality standpoint. He talks about how the front office shenanigans have done a number on the team and damaged trust. He shared that when Haula was going to be traded..the day before his wedding..they disabled his key card to get into the arena prior to telling him and how humiliating the whole scenario and timing of events was for him and his teammates. And speaks to how that pattern of behavior has continued on. He makes some interesting points re: treating players like pawns instead of human beings in the name of business and the effects of doing so.

Kinda sheds light on how he was so easily discouraged here too if he thought that kind of pattern might be continuing.

Not sure I would jump to that.

I think the simplest answer is the right one in this case. Haula was in a contract year and wanted big numbers to get the best contract he could get. He starts off hot and everything is going well. He gets injured and isn't playing as well when he returns, so Rod reduces his role. Haula gets upset about his role and makes it known, thus the falling out with Rod. Don't think there was any deeper meaning about it.

It wasn't complete surprise, though: two weeks before James Neal had called him to tell that Canes had called Neal and asked several questions about Haula. The signal had been pretty clear.

His rant was more about the timing of it all and how his teammates witnessed how they treated a player who was all in for the organization. They locked him out of the building and couldn't hold off even one day when they knew practically the entire organization would be attending the wedding.

Mostly, it was sort of a cautionary tale of how all the tinkering with the roster and witnessing the underhanded ways of handling things with players & coaches has taken a toll and changed the team's identity and demeanor.

Well that was interesting. It was obvious from the first exhibition game I watched the guy wasn’t going to fit in for awhile. He just wasn’t playing at the same pace as everyone else, which made figuring out what to do with him difficult. He needed time in the minors and had obviously not signed to play in the minors. He had the hands but he was holding onto pucks you can’t hold onto and trying to force plays that weren’t there. He needed to learn how to play the nhl style and that wasn’t going to work at his age.

They never should’ve signed him to that contract in the first place.

While I don't disagree with your general premise about treating players like numbers/poorly can have adverse impacts, I do find the Haula reports a bit speculative or at least overblown.

First, Haula was traded on Wednesday and his wedding was Saturday, so it was saying he was locked out the day before his wedding doesn't seem that unreasonable. Every company I worked for removed access to employees the exact day they were no longer employed. Their lockers were already cleaned out (and Haula's probably was cleaned out long ago due to his injury).
Secondly, while I get Haula has a bunch more money so people to help, when I got married, the days leading up to the wedding was nuts with wedding plans, rehearsals, entertaining out of town guests, last minute preparations, etc... What was the chance that Haula was going to go into the building on the day before or the day of his wedding anyhow? Very, very unlikely IMO.

I'm not saying there aren't other issues in LV that are real, but I'm having a tough time with this report as stated.

Per the reporter who witnessed it, there was a youth hockey event being held there that day. Haula pulls up and scans his card and it doesn't work..tries a few times. So, he gets out of his car and tries it and still no dice. He then goes into the details about the wedding and poor timing. Not sure why he would offer up such details to his followers. While he's angry at the team's management, he was fairly level headed about personnel, the future, the Fleury/Lehner situation, the coach, etc.

Fair enough, I didn't read/hear the full account.

Haula was traded on Wednesday and from what I gather from your comments, he was denied access on Friday (day before his wedding). Like I said, every company (big and small) I've ever worked for removes access from employees the moment they are no longer employed. If they want to get into the facilities, they need to be escorted.

Maybe NHL teams are different in this regard, but on the surface, removing his access on Friday when he's no longer part of the organization on Wednesday doesn't seem that odd to me.

Certainly. I have been there on layoff day so I know how it works. The whole point in this case was about treating players and coaches like human beings instead of commodities. And, when you don't, there can be consequences.

I agree with your overall point. I'm not sure removing access from a person who no longer works for you isn't "treating them like a human being" as it's pretty common. It's fine if you disagree.
