Honestly that was the best result for UCLA after the kick return then big catch. No chance unless USC scored immediately.

Though they probably should have burnt 1 of their 3 timeouts before the last USC TD.

Clay Helton is Rasputin- just when it looks like he's in trouble, his teams seemingly pulls magic out of nowhere

Florida has no business winning this game. That last drive was "everything you DON'T do when trying to get the ball back at home with under 2 minutes to play in a tied game and you're trying to maintain your #6 ranking and show you might be worthy of a top-4 spot with a conference championship win."
And still they would have won (undeservedly) if the officials hadn't screwed them

That was in the past, though. They had overcome all the past mistakes and the bad officiating and there they were, tied at 34, chance to get the ball to end the game ... and then Wilson decides to be a goddamn moron like he has been all year long ... and then Mullen gives them time to relax, prepare, line things up, think through it all carefully, and boot a 59-yard FG instead of having to rush out and boot it on the fly.

Lots of self-inflicted mistakes. They were still in position to win. They decided to self-inflict some more wounds to finish themselves off.

Illini fired Lovie Smith.

Sadly, the right move. He was hired in the hopes that he'd be able to be a great recruiter and developer of youth talent, but sadly neither really panned out, especially on the offesive side of things.

Time for yet another rebuild.

Surprise surprise another African American coach undeservingly fired.
The systemic racism in college sports is incredible.

Undeservingly?

He went 17-39 :biglaugh:
On a 6-year, $21 million contract. One that saw him get a 2-year extension after the 3rd year, where he was 9-27. (Where he probably would have been fired, because the 2018 team was a nuclear waste fire, but he would have been due a $12 million buyout.) And he got another $1 million just for making it to 2019. Plus whatever other bonuses he earned (likely tied to academic performance, if any).

What would be realistic near-term? Being middle of the pack in the B1G West. They're not better than Wisconsin or Northwestern or Iowa. They did beat Nebraska (who sucks right now), but lost to Purdue (who's also not good). Indiana is better than them right now. Yes, that Indiana - the one that had exactly one winning season between 1995 and 2018 (7-6, 2007) and has largely treated football season as the warm-up to basketball season.

A coach doesn't have to come in and start peeling off 9-3 seasons, but a coach needs to come in and not

  • Finally go 6-6 and then get waxed in a bowl game
  • Lose at home to Eastern Michigan
  • Get routed 63-0 at home in a game where the stadium wasn't half full and still had more opposing fans in the stands
  • Struggle past Kent State at home
  • Struggle past Ball State at home
  • Lose at home to Western Michigan
  • Generally get thumped by in-state rival Northwestern
