NWHL Announces Season 6 Timeline
July 29, 2020
by NWHL Media
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE JULY 29, 2020

BROOKLYN –
In the NWHL’s continuing efforts to manage the COVID-19 pandemic while prioritizing the wellbeing of all players, staff, fans and the community, the league today announced a timeline for the upcoming season.

The regular season will begin in January 2021, with each team playing a full season of 20 games, and the Isobel Cup Playoffs are expected to be completed by the end of March. The league will aim to hold its popular annual All-Star Game, but not until after the Isobel Cup Playoffs are completed.

Although regular season games will start in January, the NWHL and the league’s six teams will continue their focus on enhanced opportunities for player development starting in September 2020. Optional on-ice practices and off-ice training will be available for all teams and players beginning the week of September 21 and formal practices will begin the week of October 19. Throughout, NWHL teams will strictly adhere to the protocols established by infectious disease experts, the NWHL medical team and community officials in each market. ...

This is an ancient article, but I have two questions:

1. Will the Toronto Six play in America? It's highly unlikely the team can play in Canada, what with quarantine restrictions in place, so that would require them either setting up a neutral site or becoming a travelling squad.
2. Will the league finally cap off the playoffs at 4 teams? I'm tired of seeing the Whale get rewarded for doing absolutely nothing, just so they have a chance at a fluke victory.

January 2021 is almost a pandemic lifetime away. Too early to predict how current conditions & policies in Ontario will evolve.

Presuming the League actually makes it to a playoff in 2021, and further presuming North American restrictions offer enough playing site options, I believe the NWHL will continue to involve all of their teams in the post-season. They need to do everything they can to grow their fanbase, and leaving one or more teams out of the playoffs is counter to that goal.

I don't reasonably see how they can expect to play this season. The border is tight, and I know at least the ECHL teams are having issues with it. I'd imagine even the AHL teams are too. It just doesn't seem feasible at this point in time for them to play this season with a home venue in the GTA.

Stretching the imagination a bit (which is required under prevailing conditions if you're a business trying to get off the ground) ... What if the agreement between Canlan Ice Sports in York, ON and the Toronto Six included the possibility of using a U.S. based Canlan facility for alternate home ice? Canlan owns (and maybe operates?) three ice facilities in the U.S.: one in Ft. Wayne, IN, and two in suburban Chicago, IL. Solves the presumed border crossing issues come January, and any of the three locations would give the Minnesota Whitecaps a much closer rival. This would not be unprecedented, considering the two NAHL teams from Alaska (Fairbanks & Kenai River) are playing their "home games" for 2020 in Minnesota.

The NWHL's new 2021 season plan is to jam their entire regular season AND the Isobel Cup championship tourney into two weeks of "bubble hockey" play. At least they've been able to secure a nice (and remote) facility. Creativity required in this pandemic ...

NWHL Announces Plan for Season and Isobel Cup Playoffs at Lake Placid's 1980 Rink-Herb Brooks Arena
November 25, 2020
by NWHL MEDIA

The National Women’s Hockey League today announced a plan to present the upcoming season and 2021 Isobel Cup Playoffs at the 1980 Rink-Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, NY between January 23 - February 5, 2021.

The event is presented in partnership with the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA).

The goal of the NWHL bubble season is to play in a protective environment that prioritizes the health and safety of the players, staff, and surrounding community.

“The NWHL is excited to provide hockey fans a fast-paced schedule of thrilling games on the road to the Isobel Cup,” said NWHL Interim Commissioner Tyler Tumminia, who led the Lake Placid project since taking over in mid-October. “The continued challenges brought by the pandemic resulted in a mandate for our league, players and partners to collaborate on creating a controlled environment protecting the health of everyone involved. At a time of hyper-growth for girls’ and women’s hockey, we see this season as a celebration of the sport. This will be a historic moment as the hallowed arena that was the site of the “Miracle on Ice” in 1980 hosts its first women’s professional championship. It is a proud moment for the NWHL, the players, and all hockey fans.”

The competition in Lake Placid will feature the NWHL’s six teams – Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters, Minnesota Whitecaps, and first-year expansion club the Toronto Six – and will be played without fans in attendance. The NWHL’s initiative comes in the wake of tremendous work in 2020 by the WNBA and NWSL, which executed successful and safe seasons while igniting massive increases in television viewership, streaming, apparel sales, and fan engagement.

“ORDA and the NWHL are hopeful that our plan for the tournament will be able to move forward,” said Director of Sport Paul Wylie. “ORDA has been involved in the development of Women’s Hockey for many years, including hosting the World Championships, countless international tournaments, and camps, as well as a training base for the U.S. Olympic Women’s Hockey Team.”

The teams will arrive separately in Lake Placid in a staggered schedule on Jan. 21 and 22. Beginning Jan. 23, they will each play five games (one against each team in the league), followed by a playoff round that will determine the four teams advancing to the Isobel Cup Semifinals. The single-game Semifinals will feature the top-seeded team against the fourth-place team, with the teams, ranked second and third facing each other. The winners of the Semifinals will advance to the Isobel Cup Final on Friday, Feb. 5.

The entire season will be conducted in Lake Placid with regular COVID-19 testing provided by Yale Pathology Labs. All participants will follow strict adherence to protocols established by the medical team from the NWHL’s partners at NYU Langone Health, led by Drs. Andrew Feldman and Guillem Gonzalez-Lomas. With the ever-changing COVID-19 landscape, these protocols will be modified based on the most current research and evidence.

All of the professional players who signed contracts this year for the NWHL season will be compensated in full, despite the condensed game schedule. Players were given the opportunity to opt-out of the tournament and still receive their complete salaries. At this date, more than 95 percent of the players have committed to the competition, giving each team a full playing roster for Lake Placid – the site of the iconic “Miracle on Ice” by the U.S. Olympic Team in 1980. Following local and national health guidelines, NWHL teams began voluntary workouts in September and started official practices and workouts in October.

The complete schedule, broadcast information, and additional details will be made available in the weeks leading up to the season.

This 2021 NWHL season remains subject to the final agreement by and among the NWHL, the Olympic Regional Development Authority of New York, and the State of New York as to the NWHL Return to Play Plan, consistent with the New York State Forward Guidance for Professional Sports and Training Competitions. The State of New York has provided the Olympic Regional Development Authority of New York with approval to operate its facilities in Lake Placid, including Herb Brooks Arena, consistent with New York State Forward Guidance.

I got to wondering where the NWHL players & staff & League officials will be lodging in Lake Placid during the "bubble hockey" period described above. The old Olympic Village was long ago converted to a prison. ORDA does have a redevelopment project for the Olympic facilities in progress, but I'm doubting that is far enough along to afford a central lodging complex. So I guess that leaves one (or more) of the hotels & lodges in town near/on Mirror Lake. Could be a brief but welcome boom to the local lodging business after what must've been a dismal spring thru fall & soon winter. Good luck & hopeful futures to all parties involved.

Lake Placid has plenty of hotel facilities, I'd bet they'll rent out an entire hotel so they can control access.

NWHL 2021 SEASON TO FEATURE AN ALL-FEMALE USA HOCKEY OFFICIATING STAFF

December 23, 2020
by NWHL MEDIA

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.—With the help and guidance from USA Hockey, the NWHL's upcoming season will have an all-female officiating staff. The league’s regular-season contests, as well as the 2021 Isobel Cup Playoffs, will be staged at the iconic Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, N.Y., from Jan. 23–Feb. 5, 2021.

The 10 officials selected to the NWHL officiating staff include Sarah Buckner (Crystal, Minn.), Erika Greenen (Romeoville, Ill.), Kendall Hanley (Minneapolis, Minn.), Alicia Hanrahan (St. Paul, Minn.), Jacqueline Howard (Gaithersburg, Md.), Jamie Huntley-Park (Escondido, Cali.), Jackie Spresser (Thornton, Colo.), Amanda Tassoni (Bradford, R.I.), Mackenzie Welter (Rome, N.Y.), and Laura White (Runnemede, N.J.). ...

The participation of this officiating crew in the NWHL’s season is a milestone for pro hockey. While the league has had all-female officiating crews work games before, there has never been an all-female officiating initiative of this scale. ...
