UConn put 40 shots on net against Ostman, no wonder he cramped up in the 3rd. Good game played by the Black Bears, breaking their losing streak @ 5 games. Same two on Saturday late afternoon @ Storrs, again on the CBS Sports Live free stream.

not drafted yet is Ostman... the other one is a year ahead and is a Canucks draftee as a Sophomore, now that Swayman's now in Providence.

SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process commenced earlier this month when NCAA Division I women's ice hockey coaches were asked to nominate players for the award. Players who were nominated by multiple coaches were then placed on an official ballot, which was returned to the coaches to vote for the ten finalists. The independent accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, tabulated the ballots.

The three finalists, including the recipient of the 2021 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, will be chosen by a 13-person selection committee made up of NCAA Division I women's ice hockey coaches, representatives of print and broadcast media, an at-large member and representative of USA Hockey, the national governing body for the sport of ice hockey in the United States. The top-three finalists will be announced on Thursday, March 18.

The presentation of the 2021 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award is scheduled for Saturday, March 27. More details around the unveiling will be shared soon. ...

Two men's teams lucky that all 11 Hockey East programs are going to the conference tournament this year ... UMass Lowell sweeps Vermont for a pair of wins in Burlington, lifting the River Hawks to a 7-8-0 record and leaving the Catamounts @ 1-9-2. Both teams have had significant pauses in play during this COVID-influenced season, and each has just one more weekend of ir-regular season play to determine their entry seeding for the HEA tourney starting March 10th. Good luck to them both.

Wisconsin downs Minnesota Duluth in overtime to claim WCHA title

Daryl Watts scores to seal title for the Badgers

DULUTH, Minn.— The top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team rallied from a 3-2 deficit late in the third period to defeat No. 7 Minnesota Duluth, 4-3, in overtime, on Saturday to clinch the program's ninth WCHA regular-season title.

Daryl Watts scored twice, including the game-winning goal during overtime, to lead the Badgers (12-3-1, 12-3-1-1-1-1 WCHA) to their fifth WCHA regular-season title in the last six years. This also marks Watts' second OT game winner of the year. ...

ALBANY, N.Y. — ECAC Hockey has announced the dates and format of the 2021 men’s and women’s league championships. All four competing institutions will compete in a single-elimination championship over the course of one championship weekend. Information on seeding and scenarios are also below.

2021 Women’s Championship
The two women’s semifinal matchups will be played on Friday, March 5, with sites and times yet to be determined. The No. 4 seed will travel to No. 1, and No. 3 will travel to No. 2 for the right to compete in the championship game on Sunday, March 7 at the site of the highest remaining seed.

Seeding will be finalized after this weekend, and will be determined by percentage of available points, as not all teams have competed in the same amount of league games. Colgate, Clarkson, and St. Lawrence are currently fighting for the regular-season trophy, but all four programs still have the opportunity to host semifinal games. ...

2021 Men’s Championship
The men’s championship will follow the same format as the women, with semifinals being conducted on Thursday, March 18 before a championship game on Saturday, March 20.

GOTW: Nick Swaney’s hat trick returns No. 10 Minnesota Duluth to win column with 5-1 win over No. 6 St. Cloud State

By Jim Connelly - February 27, 2021

There was no doubt coming into Saturday’s game against No. 6 St. Cloud State that Minnesota Duluth, riding a three-game losing streak scoring just twice in that trio of games, hoped for a statement game.

A 5-1 win against the number six team in the nation qualified as that, a victory that was led by senior Nick Swaney, who scored three of the first four goals for the Bulldogs and helped them control the game that resulted in definitive win over the Huskies. ...

After losing the last three games, the ability to take control of a game and finish pleased coach Scott Sandelin.

“We played with some confidence,” Sandelin said. “We didn’t look like we had lost three games. We got the lead and built on that lead. It’s something we needed badly.” ...

Roundup: Providence Bounces Back From Rough Loss

BU, UConn Also Recover After Friday Defeats

CHN Staff Report

With a few days to dwell on an 8-1 loss at the hands of Massachusetts last Tuesday, Providence went a long way towards exorcising that demon.

The Friars held Northeastern to just 13 shots in a 4-2 win at Matthews Arena. The win theoretically is a big boost to Providence in the Hockey East standings and in terms of NCAA Tournament consideration. But the teams play again Sunday, so another win is important for Providence.

"I don't know what's a must win and what's not a must win. It was a must 'we gotta play well' after our showing on Tuesday, I can tell you that," Providence coach Nate Leaman said. "I wanted to see us compete, I wanted to see us execute a lot better, and I wanted to see us be much more of a team, and I thought we did that. I thought the road was good for us to do that. ..."

Roundup: Caufield Hat Trick Lifts Wisconsin

CHN Staff Report

Cole Caufield keeps on piling up Hobey Baker Award credentials. The sophomore sensation picked up a hat trick against Ohio State, as the Badgers' offense exploded one night after being stymied to a single goal in regulation.

Caufield is up to 22 goals on the season now, in 26 games, a pace that would put him in lofty company in recent college hockey history.

The win, following the overtime win a night earlier, keeps Wisconsin's hopes alive for the Big Ten regular-season championship. Because of cancellations of recent games, the teams will play an uneven amount, so the league title will go by winning percentage. Wisconsin is currently at 14-5-1-2, .697, while Minnesota is 15-5-0-0, .750. The Badgers finish with two at Michigan State, while Minnesota hosts Michigan for a pair.

"We got our momentum when we got back from Christmas and got our full team together, and it allowed us to practice together as a group," Wisconsin coach Tony Granato said of his team, which has gone 11-2-1 down the stretch, following a strong showing in a split with Minnesota right after the holiday break. "The first few months of the season there was a handful of times we had our full team on the ice together. ... You felt that (Minnesota series) was going to be the start of something special, and it has been. ... It hasn't been perfect, we haven't run the table, it's pretty hard to do that against the competition we have. But I think every single game we've positioned ourselves to be in. When things didn't go well at the start of games ... the kids kept playing and playing and playing. So the momentum we've been able to carry on since Christmas, we want to make sure to (keep going). We have a chance to take a crack at the No. 1 seed." ...

The 3rd seed Providence Lady Friars make the most of their 13 skaters to win their HEA Conference Quarterfinals match vs. 6th seed Boston University by a score of 4-3. Friars junior forward Caroline Peterson led her team's offense with 2 goals & 1 assist. PC senior goaltender Sandra Abstreiter & her teammates stood up to increased offensive pressure in the closing minutes from the Lady Terriers. In the final minute, BU pulled their goalie & scored a 5-on-4 goal with 10.6 seconds left. But by then it was too late to tie it up, and the Friars move on in the Hockey East tournament.

Congrats to the Lady Friars on their hard-fought victory, as well as to the competitive-to-the-end Lady Terriers who battled COVID adversity (not beginning play until early December) to earn their shot in the tourney.

#5 seed Maine earns a 3-1 victory over host #4 seed Vermont in the second match of the women's HEA Conference Quarterfinals. The Black Bears' sophomore forward Ida Kuoppala scored twice & junior forward Celine Tedenby put the game out of the reach with just 2 minutes left to play. Maine's senior netminder Loryn Porter stopped 33 of 34 shots for the victory, with the only UVM goal being a laser top shelf early in the 3rd period by Catamount junior forward Corinne McCool.

Two more QF games to go this evening, UConn @ BC (4:30 p.m. ET start) and UNH @ Northeastern (7 p.m. ET start). Just like the first two, both games will be free streamed on CBS Sports Live.

In the third Hockey East women's tournament game of the day - #7 seed UConn @ #2 seed BC (ranked #6 nationally) - the teams played a scoreless opening period with the Eagles displaying the better offensive play & strong goaltending by junior Abigail Levy. But the Huskies came out for the 2nd period with all cylinders firing, put BC back on their heels defensively, and took a commanding 3-0 lead with some well-placed shots. The Lady Eagles took the offensive momentum back in the 3rd, but UConn defended smartly & fed a long outlet pass through the pressing BC squad to junior forward Danika Pasqua (part of her 3-point game) who increased the lead to 4-0 with about 7 minutes left. Red-shirt junior defender Cayla Barnes responded for BC about a minute later to break the shutout of junior goalie Samantha Carpentier-Yelle. But UC senior forward Morgan Wabick bookended her 2-goal game with under 2 minutes to play, and the Lady Huskies pulled off the first real upset in this tourney with a stunning 5-1 victory.

The HEA Quarterfinals wrapped up Sunday evening without surprise, as the Northeastern Huskies broke their match with the visiting UNH Wildcats wide open in the 2nd period with 5 goals in a 9-minute surge to take a 6-0 lead into the 2nd intermission. The Cats' red-shirt junior goaltender Ava Boutilier - with little fault to accept on any of her 5 goals allowed - was replaced late in the middle period by sophomore Nikki Hartnett, who played solidly in a daunting situation through the rest of the game. But the Lady Huskies were unstoppable, and they won the game 7-0 with 7 different goal scorers and another easy night in nets for Aerin Frankel who stopped all 21 Wildcats shots.

A total team victory – the Huskies' 14th in a row - which will only strengthen NU’s resolve as they move on to the 2021 HEA Semifinals.

Band of Brothers
Notre Dame's Sibling Pipeline is Alive and Well

by Jashvina Shah/Staff Writer

Over a decade ago, Graham and Landon Slaggert were little kids hopping on the ice after Notre Dame’s hockey practice.

On Wednesday, Graham and Landon Slaggert were those Notre Dame players that stayed alone on the ice, shooting pucks together. ...

Graham and Landon have obvious connections to Notre Dame — their dad Andy is a coach. But they’re also a set of brothers playing for the same team. That’s common enough in college hockey, but Graham and Landon aren’t the only brothers (who are playing or have played) for Notre Dame. ... In total, there have been 15 sets of brothers who’ve played for the Fighting Irish. It stretches back all of Graham’s life, to a pair of brothers who played in 2000-01, Tony and Aaron Gill. ...
