ROR had messy divorces with two teams, and once signed an offer sheet. That went against Hextall's 'dyed in wool' philosophy he had in young players, especially in having to give some up. He seemed to question if those types of players would be fully committed - and some of those things probably made him think there was a risk with ROR if things went bad instead of having the confidence that it would make the team better.

Let's not pretend other teams wouldn't find the same issues, because they would. It was still $30M they had to pay him.

What are you arguing exactly? We had a need and the perfect player to fill the need who was available at an exceedingly reasonable price. 2018 19OA + B prospect >> Blues' 2019 1st and Tage Thompson.

So Hextall was afraid to take on even the slightest risk, just like he was during his entire tenure as GM.

ROR was a clear case of an elite talent being sold at below-market rate. We really needed to be in on him.

So why weren't teams lined up to sell their soul if ROR was seen as an elite talent?
His best season in Colorado he had 42 ES points, one 41, one 40 point season. Out of 9 seasons.
He had 24 and 20 ES points his first two seasons, but people think Patrick can't improve.
He was a good PP scorer, and a solid defender.
Better player than Duchene, but with the same inconsistency.

ROR was never an elite scorer until last season, which until proved otherwise, was probably a fluke, like Schenn the season before in St Louis.
He was a top 6 forward, a notch better than Schenn who garnered a similar deal.

I amazed by all the brilliant people here with 20/20 hindsight.

You are assuming we had a "Tage Thompson" that Buffalo would accept, plus two veteran forwards who could fill short-term needs (57 points between them), plus the 1st and 2nd rd picks.
Who was our Thompson? Certainly not Laughton.

Again, 20/20 hindsight, it's not what Buffalo got, it's what Buffalo THOUGHT they were getting at the time.

Let’s stop acting like Tage Thompson is some kind of special prospect or was even considered one. He was always considered a project and he was a first rounder based off his size. There are dozens upon dozen of prospects better than him and were at the time of the trade.

No, it's not hindsight when I wanted him last year. ROR is one of the most consistent players in the league and for a guy who screams about two-way play being important, he should be right in your wheel house. The fact that he eludes your proprietary rankings is a problem with your analysis, not ROR.

You are the guy who said it would have cost NAK and that should be a deal-breaker.

Lol hindsight? There were many of us who were beating this shit to death about ROR. Some chose to ignore it and heavily rely on his statistics from a very poor team.

YOU ARE THE GUY WHO SAID NAK WAS THE EQUIVALENT OF TAGE THOMPSON.
