I got to go Hogberg over Zamula again, Zamula has more offensive upside, but Hogberg has been playing in the SHL since he was 18.

cates or laczyinski for me over zamula until he shows he can replicate his season. The other two have shown more until now

What has Cates really shown though?

7th in scoring on his own team last season and 34th in PPG among U20 NCAA players last season.

Was he getting bottom 6 minutes or something? I'm ignorant on Cates.

Cates stood out at the WJC, both the summer tryouts and the actual tournament.
He's a smart, fundamentally sound two way player who's filling out a good frame.
Good but not great skater who isn't dynamic but smooth and reliable.

Minnesota-Duluth may be a powerhouse, but they're not an offensive juggernaut - forward scoring:

MacKay (RW) 40g 16-17 33 +19 (24)
Richards (C) 42g 12-20 32 +20 (20)
Swaney (RW) 40g 115-10 25 +17 (21)
Kreiger (C) 41g 9-15 24 +12 (24)
Cates (LW) 40g 9-14 23 +12 (19)
Tufte (LW) 42g 9-10 19 +2 (20)
Koepke (LW) 42g 7-12 19 +14 (20)
Roth (F) 42g 8-7 15 +4 (21)
Cates (C) 39g 8-6 14 +3 (21) [older brother]

I had a talk with a Flyers development guy a few weeks back . They as in the Flyers have a much higher opinion of Cates than me or this group really has . he said if you watch him he does all the little things correct that translate so well and that coaches like so much .

My response to him was that's all great and dandy but if you are getting top line mins and pp time where the heck are the points to back his argument up . He was in his draft plus 2 year on a really good team and only put up .57 pts/gm . He said he was immature physically that this will be his breakout year , we will see .

I think he started the year on the 3rd line iirc. By the 2nd half of the year he was playing on the 1st line.

I dislike this thought process. My feelings have nothing to do with the specific players being discussed, Just the state of mind in general. Stuff like that gets said every year in this vote. People are way too afraid to project.

I feel like Laczynski is getting a raw deal, but I've made my commitment and am sticking to it.

I feel like Cates is a lock 4th liner. And I do think he's going to have a big college season this year. But he sort of has a Podein/Raffl future role.

its not even about that for me though. I don't think zamula is head and shoulders above a guy like lacysnki/cates. If he can replicate the season then Im on board with him. I feel like a lot of people are rating him really high..my opinion though lol. Would love nothing more than zamula to do great. I just really like cates haha and think he can be a solid 3rd liner who does all the little things for us..kinda like lindblom. Zamula can go any direction really

This is interesting...

Does he seem to think that physical immaturity is what has held back better production?

What this poll is really showing is the Flyers are very deep in second tier prospects, guys who are more middle 6, 2/3rd pair defensemen who can provide cheap depth the next 4-5 season.

In the past we were not only shallow, but past the first few prospects you were looking at 3rd tier guys, bottom six, 3rd pair defensemen types like Cousins, Leier, Manning, Alt, etc. Guys whose upside was above replacement level but not much more.

The only thing I was worried about with Hextall leaving was the draft. Because he did well. But Fletcher’s first draft rivaled anything Hextall did. So maybe the Flyers have a damn good scouting staff.

And Fletcher was smart enough to know: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Yeah, I was super worried about how the draft would look under Fletcher, but I loved the 2019 draft much more than the 2018 one. Though in Hextall's defense, I think that was the only one I didn't like under his tenure.

This lends credibility to my thought that the gm doesn't do as much individual player draft analysis, but more tells the scouts what the organization is looking for in players and the scouts go out and do the work. Hopefully that means we can continue to draft well under a new GM.

At the very least, I'm pretty sure Hextall would not have prioritized getting Brink as much as Chuck did, which was refreshing to finally take an undersized point scoring machine.
