Nordic Combined is probably the sport that seems most foreign to me as a Canadian, but it is also interesting. On a side note I think it would be hilarious if there was a discipline that combined the jump and cross country portions. As in you jumped off the hill onto a sprint course (maybe a km or two) had to ski it in the same skis you jumped in (although I imagine that would be basically impossible), and the fastest time won.
That would be fun but it`s not possible, at least not with these skis. It`s not even the same shoes and bindings.
This formula has been tweaked with (especially how the jumps are calculated). If you want both sports to count equal and not one is the afterthought of the other, the importance of the jump needs to be reflected. There were some funny scenarios in the middle of the nineties when Kenji Ogiwara was by far the best jumper in the field but was never a top athlete in the loipe, the contrary, he was one of the worst ( of the top group). Athletes would constantly gain about two minutes on him but that wasn`t enough.Yeah, I figured it wouldn't really be possible to cross country ski on ski jumping skis. Although the imagine in my head of someone doing cross country on massive skis is quite funny. I guess more realistically they could just change skis on the fly like in the skiathlon.
Regardless I am not sure if the difference in distance between jumps is large enough that it would have a significant enough impact on the cross country portion. Although I suppose that when judging points are added to the jumping portion a penalty time could be added to the final time, or a small penalty loop can be on the cross country course and depending on how many points you got for your jump you would have to do a certain number of penalty laps.
Yeah, and Hannu Manninen, too. Neither has really any medal chances anymore. But it`s nice to see them.Jason Lamy-Chappuis is back?! Awesome. Haven't paid much attention to this lately.
Always love the cross country aspect, some thrilling finishes.
The favourites are largely the same as the top athletes are mostly good in either. The days were one was a specialist on the hill but bad in the loipe are over. Riiber has only an outside shot. He won one worldcup race and that was over a year ago. But he was on a podium in January. So, basically, I saw stranger things than Riiber medaling. Are the contenders for the large hill going to be largely the same? I would imagine that the better jumpers have a better chance in that event so maybe Riiber?
Fair to say Germany might be favourites in the relay...!This is just incredible. All three medals for the Germans. All Germans in the top7 and the relay is yet to come soon. I'm a little calmer now. Great race by the guys.
Germany with Gold. Best team success in ages. Norway with the Silver, Austria with the Bronze. Now up for Biathlon
