But this gets to be like the old flawed "you don't want to win the president's trophy" talk. It's not like there is another draft spot where you're going to find more winners.

For sure.

The higher you pick a QB the more likely he is to succeed. I think the problem is, sometimes teams pick a QB higher for that reason. Some years, their just aren't QBs worthy of going #1 in terms of where they are as a prospect, but you still see them going #1 anyways. Teams sort of force the issue if that makes sense.

Of course the argument can be made when you fail with a top 5 QB the damage to organization longterm is far greater so yes the reward is higher but the risks are also higher the higher you pick up

Christian Ponder is perfect example of a 2nd round QB at best draft high in 1st simply out of desperation

If you look at the last 18 years, The Mannings are the only QBs picked #1 to win a SB, Dilfer the only other winner picked in the top 10.

Brady is an extreme outlier that skews it though. With the Mannings (4) and 11th pick Roethlisberger (2) added in that's not a bad percentage.

You are describing the Browns. When they had nothing at QB, they constantly tried to find their QBs later in the draft. Quinn, Weeden, and Manziel were late first rounders. Kizer was a second rounder. Frye, McCoy, and Kessler were third rounders.

Over and over, the Browns had super high picks and the easy ability to move up higher to get one of the top QBs, but what constantly happened was a new regime would be taking over, would declare the cupboard to be empty, and would say they need to trade down to get more assets while taking a QB late saying they really like that guy and, you know, Brady was a 6th rounder. It was a loser attitude by idiot GMs who were afraid to attach themselves to a highly drafted QB out of fear they'd be fired if that QB didn't work out, yet all of them ended up fired largely because their bargain bin QB choices resulted in dead last division finishes year after year.

Yeah, they're the worst (or best) example of it. Panthers did the same thing before Newton, bleeding picks year after year. You have to hope the Giants or Steelers aren't next as they've spent a fairly high pick (3rd & 4th) at the position the last two years.

And of that non-1st rounders, five of the nine belong to one guy, so already you know the balance is skewed by one extreme outlier. Foles is a dude who would be no team’s long term solution as a starter who had a total fluke of a run. Wilson is awesome. Johnson was a journeyman QB who had a nice career and was drafted over 25 years ago.

Russell Wilson is an outlier of a different sort. He had 1st round talent but teams still put way too much stock in height. If he were over 6' he wouldn't have been a 3rd round pick.

Look at Tom Brady, best ever, didn't even get picked until the 190's in 2000. Getting a QB can be good but you can wait on picking that QB as well.

Operating like this is how you never get a QB though.

That one team that one time cashed in a cosmic super jackpot and got the greatest QB ever in a "didn't know the draft went that deep" pick.

If you look at the 2017 draft, the two best QBs from it were picked 10th & 12th.

Or even 2012 where the best QB was picked in the 3rd round.

Apparently Alex Smith's career might be in serious jeopardy. His broken leg is now infected since he had surgery to repair it. There's legit concerns that his career might not be the only thing he loses as well.

Sources: QB Smith fights infection after surgeries

Can't help but feel for the guy. He never had it easy in his career and now more of the same
Those infections are serious business. Careers have been ended by these kinds of infections. The Browns has Joe Jurevicius and LeCharles Bentley has post-surgery staph infections in their knees end their careers. Bentley almost lost his leg.

There was legitimate concern about his career even without complications. I broke my leg in a car accident about 10-11 years ago. A little lower, closer to the ankle, but same bones. It was a solid year before I could walk without wincing and I had to use a cane for a long time. Athletes might heal faster with muscle stuff, but a broken bone is going to take as long as it needs to heal and there's not a whole lot you can do about it.

I liked Kessler in Cleveland but yeah the Jags will be looking to turn it back around and they will need a better QB then Kessler if they want to compete

Kessler would be good #2 to keep around going forward for any team though
