Hainsey had been great, compared to expectations, and I liked it more than most Leafs fans. The offense won't stay at the rate it's going now but he's been stable back their for Rielly, our only good pairing thus far.

Marleau is about what I though, he's good but he's not the amazing player he used to be obviously that casual fans might expect from the name recognition. Probably not worth the cap hit, but we can eat it for now. Like always it'll come down to what happens in the offseason of 2019.

Moore's been meh, he's got 3 goals, but hasn't been good, alternating with Fehr and then losing his spot in favour of mixing the lines up to put Bozak at 4C.

Hainsey- He's been lights out. Him and Rielly have carried the D.

Bozak- He's been a blackhole defensively and on the boards. He's picked it up a bit as of late but it's still a fundamental issue with his game and always has been/will be. He's been awful but he'd work with better posession drivers/wingers that have size. He has good vision, playmaking so he can produce, it's a usage issue with him. With that said, you can probably nitpick on every #3C in the league.

JVR- One-dimensional scorer as always that has nifty hands up tight and a strong net presence. Shelter him and he's a 1st line LW with analogous production. Blackhole defensively. Buyer beware if your offering him long term. Put him with a Statsny, Steen or a higher-end defensive C like a Koivu, Bergeron and no one would really say anything negative about his game.

Marleau- He's been pretty good but he's still not worth his contract if we're projecting long-term. He's played upto his deal to start this year, however. It's hard to say it's bad or horrible because he's been good for us. His only weakness thus far is that he's provided nothing on the PP #2 with Matthews/Nylander. Just has zero chemistry with them.

Radulov: Exactly as advertised. Great play making, creates tons of chances, and never stops hustling.

Bishop: Solid goalie. He's calm and exactly the kind of goalie we needed.

Hanzal: Slow and often injured. No offence. Thought he was a decent signing, but has looked bad so far.

Pitlick: Love his hustle. Perfect fourth liner that generates lots of offensive chances.

You are aware your list has two non fa signings right?

Vanek: Surprisingly effective. No one expects him to tear up the scoresheets like earlier in his career, but so far he has been a nice value addition

Gagner: Overall pretty useless. The supposed PP specialist has been a train wreck on the PP. His deployment has been strange though.

Del Zotto: Warming up on him. Seems pretty decent, actually. Not quite the style of player I expected, and in a good way. Good transition guy and can eat minutes.

Nilsson: has looked awesome. Should have started a couple more games but left the team briefly for the birth of his child. But, the games he has played have been mostly great.

Burmistrov: relatively invisible. Not bad, adds very little.

Michael Del Zotto has been a very pleasant surprise and has definitely surpassed my expectations. Travis Green has put a lot of trust in him already, which is a great sign. Vanek signing has been a great late FA addition, unless we stay in the playoff race he'll get us a decent return at the deadline. Anders Nilsson has been great and subsequently pushing Markstrom to up his game which makes both goalies play better. Was skeptical about the Gagner signing from day one and he isn't really surprising me with how he's doing. Other than that, overall a pretty positive outcome on our FA signings so far though

Mason - quite bad but I haven't given up yet
Kulikov - solid
Hendricks - hasn't played much but not terrible

Jagr - Definitely has taken a big decline from last year, he is slow but intelligent. Missed a bunch of games due to learning the system and injury. Still our 7th best forward so far probably because our bottom 6 is cringeworthy. Grade: C

Stone - Fine as the 3rd pairing guy and PK specialist but definitely overpaid by ~2 AAV. Grade: D

Versteeg: Cheap low-risk deal but he looks terrible this year instead of the pleasant surprise we saw last year. Grade: D

Trades:

Smith - Without him, we are bottom 5. Grade: A

Hamonic - Closer to the 16-17 Hamonic than the beast before that. He has still been an okay 4D but considering what we gave up for him he is off to a poor start. Grade: C-

Bonino - didn't participate in pre-season games, played 5 games before getting hurt again, and now he is about to come off of IR possibly before Saturday, so hard to say yet.
Hartnell - been good so far, especially on the PP.
Emelin - has the occasional big hit or a blocked shot here and there, but other than that, meh.

It’s not like islanders fans could have told you this. And did. And did again. Etc.

Niemi - At 700k, you'd think bad or good, it wouldn't matter, but my god was he awful, he just didn't track the puck well, easily rattled, couldn't make the routine save often enough and when he did look ok, by then the game was already out of reach and he'd make a few decent saves here and there. He's now with the Panthers, his cap hit is virtually no issue to bury, so there's that. He was a gamble, you win some you lose some, we lost this one.

McKegg - Didn't expect him to do anything for the Pens, maybe more for the WBS Pens, but he made the team, he's fast, his offensive IQ is 13th forward level (he routinely shoots wide when he's close to the net, how is that even possible?). He's ok at faceoffs, is fast, he'd be a good call-up, but we have him as a regular sadly.

Hunwick - He's been solid, he's fast, smart, plays a reliable game. He got a concussion in practice, but before that, he looked really good and was looking good as a RD. He's been a good pick-up.

Girardi: he has been a rock-solid bottom pairing dman. Way exceeded expectations.

Kunitz: adds hustle and a bit of skill to the bottom 6. Kind of underrated I would say. Has met expectations thus far.

Shattenkirk has been amazing, leads the league in points for a dman (won’t finish #1 but I can see him get 60)
DD has been solid
Pavelec has been okay once he starts to work with Allaire more he will get better, I haven’t had a problem with Pavelec though so far he’s looked like a solid backup
