Well if Heiskanen gets past Colorado he could drop to Buffalo.

Vancouver goes for playmaking C then, Vegas won't start their journey with a Finnish D-man, they'll take a more exciting C and maybe target Liljegren/Valimaki with their other 1st, Arizona goes for Liljegren/C, they have Oel+ Chychun already.

Nah. Arizona will scoop him up at 7 for sure.

With Benning's comments today about needing to find a 50+ point defenseman in the draft, I think we can officially give up the ghost that we may draft Makar at 8. He's going between 3 and 5.

Throw in Kane and a 2nd rounder and we could draft in the top 5.

He literally has Bo Horvat and Brock Boeser for forwards, Sedins are in their last year of their contracts, and he needs a 50pt defenseman in the worst way. :sarcasm:

he won't be around by the time whomever he drafts is ready for the NHL.

Vancouver can add forwards through free agency whenever they want. Hell of a lot better than having to pay a premium for the mediocre defensemen that hit the market.

If these hold relatively true, I'd like us to trade down from 8th to about 12-13th and pick up Valimaki (or Liljegren as a back-up plan - based on consensus and McKenzie's scout poll consensus at least one of the 2 is likely still there at 13).

With the asset taken and some of our other picks I'd try to get back into the early 25 range to pick up another D from the best on our board available left from Foote, Brannstrom, Hague or Vaakanainen (I'd expect a couple of those to still be there based on the consensus and McKenzie's scouts poll consensus).

That's of course if you are able to find willing trade partners.

1. NEW JERSEY DEVILS
Nico Hischier, Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL): The Devils make the dynamic, two-way Swiss centre a key piece of their rebuild.

2. PHILADELPHIA FLYERS
Nolan Patrick, Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL): The Flyers snag the player scouts have been raving about for years. He’ll be a high-end pro for many years.

3. DALLAS STARS
Miro Heiskanen, HIFK (Finland): The Stars get back to drafting high-end blueliners early and take the top-rated defence prospect in the draft.

4. COLORADO AVALANCHE
Cale Makar, Brooks Bandits (AJHL): It’s no secret the Avalanche need a whole lot of help with their blue-line and they take perhaps the most creatively gifted defenceman in the draft.

5. VANCOUVER CANUCKS
Cody Glass, Portland Winterhawks (WHL): Sure Vancouver needs help on the blue-line but can’t pass up one of the highest risers in the draft.

6. VEGAS GOLDEN KNIGHTS
Gabriel Vilardi, Windsor Spitfires (OHL): And with their first ever pick in the NHL Draft the Golden Knights take a champion. Dots down the best player in the draft.

7. ARIZONA COYOTES
Casey Mittelstadt, Green Bay Gamblers (USHL). The Coyotes go with the slick skating, point-producing centre from Minnesota.

8. BUFFALO SABRES
Timothy Liljegren, Rogle (Sweden): Job No. 1 for the Sabres is redo that blue-line. Liljegren is a step in that direction.

I'm starting to wonder if there might be more than 2 D off the board at our pick. I like that Mock above, Liljegren makes too much sense if that's how it falls.

Have you seen even one mock where that happens?

If we don't take Liljegren I never see a third d go in the top 10

I just don't see why teams should be so affected by a players stock falling when discussing prospects projected to go in the first half of the first round. It's not like we're talking about players that are going from "sure fire" to "bust"...not any more than any other player's bust factor from any draft. Chychrun would have been a fine selection for any team in the top ten last year, especially Buffalo. I don't want to see the same mistake this draft with Liljegren after Heiskenen and Makar are gone at #8 (or whichever D-man Buffalo thinks is #3 after those guys).

He was in my short list but his skating just has me thinking the Sabres would pass.

I don't know where this narrative comes from... the guy can skate. I mean, he's more of an "energy" skater, than an artist... but I wouldn't consider his skating a negative/con in his portfolio of skills. His size? Sure... a bit of a perimeter player? Yes... when he has the puck. But he's also a high energy forechecker who plays with a splash of reckless abandon..... skating is not something that will hold him back.

High end playmaker coming out of an uptempo/offensive scheme that highlights his skills perfectly.

I think I have an inflated opinion of many WHLers, as it was the bulk of my extra curriculars this year... but the guy is a 1st round talent, no doubt in my mind.

I'd compare him to Tim Connolly (with Nate Gerbe's personality/fearlessness)... most will take that in a negative way. :dunno:

For all the talk of trading up/down, I'm actually content with where we are. There are a lot of very good defensemen in the top 10. Take the one you want. Maybe if I had watched Makar more, I would want to trade the world for him, but I haven't.

I'm so confused about Brannstrom. ISS didn't even have him in the first round while some people that watch him seem to think he's on Lijegren/Valimaki level. I wouldn't mind getting him somehow - just not at 8OA.

why not go watch a Brannstrom video, or some of the U18 games he dominated... and tell us what YOU think?

The game is changing... and players like Makar and Brannstrom (if they reach their potential) are going to continue to change it.

I had him near Gildon, Davidsson, Mismash and Phillips but Gildon had impressed me from what I saw at the U18's enough to get up to the top of that cluster. I see a lot of elbows and knees but didn't get the idea that he was actually getting anywhere quickly.

I like him, just decided to go a different way.

is this the reformed chychrun argument?

Remind me where Chychrun went again?

Exactly where I predicted while being mocked for it for months? Even nailed the exact 4 D that would be drafted before him.

Thanks for reminding everyone that I was dead on right.
