Ned an HM. Oh how the mighty have fallen. Honestly, I have a tough time putting any goalie high in a prospect ranking because they are such a crapshoot, but Ned's size makes me think he's much more of a long shot when you consider the makeup of nhl starting goalies these days.

Personally, I think Carrick and Smallman would have the best chance of carving out an nhl career out of that group, but I don't know that much about these guys, especially Mattheos.

I'd add Matt Filipe to that group. My money's on him growing into even more of a scorer's role at Northeastern this year. Kids got some wheels too. That quick release feels like a "3rd line scorer's role" type of progression.

My money is on David Cotton making the jump into "legit prospect" status from our HMs.

You are literally parsing my words to make the opposite point I'm making.

My point: Ranking this year's 42nd pick ahead of a 5-year-old 115th pick is not proof of recency bias.

Their draft position as a prospect should make almost no difference when a guy has been developing for several years. Who cares that Carrick was a 115th vs. Eetu's 42nd? We just made Slavin the second richest contract on our team and he was a 100+ pick and gave away Murphy who was a mid first round pick. Why, because one developed and the other didn't. Carrick has played very well and developed from his 115th pick. Well enough that he was an AHL All Star two years ago. Meanwhile, Eetu is a second year eligible draftee who most of us never heard of and even more have never seen play a game. But he is better? Maybe, but my point is that none of us here would have any idea if that were the case. Except he's the new shine 2nd round toy.

Not to get off topic and break up the fistfight but...

...honest question, is Goat really eligible to play in the AHL this year? I thought CHL prospects had to turn 20 before that could happen and we just drafted him last year.

This article is five years old but:
1) You can play if you're 20 by December 31 of the year you start playing AKA 2017. Since Gauthier was born October 15, 1997, he fits that
2) You're also eligible if you've played 4 CHL seasons. He concluded his fourth season last year so he also fits that

I tried to find something more official so if there's something better/conflicts I'd like to see it

He's the new Mclovin, so he's got a fake ID that will allow him to play in the AHL.

That website is right; that's how it works. He fits both criteria as you said.

in addition to that, in recent interviews Gauthier has made a point to mention his "junior career is over", including multiple times without being prompted in an interview from Summer fest.

certainly seems like his mindset is to go hard in training camp, and spend the year in Charlotte if he can't crack the lineup straight away.

Thanks for the info! I'd never actually seen that rule and always just assumed prospects had to be 20 (since the majority of the time they are 20 and 2 years removed from being drafted).

That being said, I'm going with CandyCanes answer! McLovin hooked him up! :yo:

My money is on David Cotton making the jump into "legit prospect" status from our HMs.

I like Cotton a lot as well. But he's still got some work to do with his hands, not so much around the net but when he's carrying the puck. Otherwise, he's got some underrated talent. I just really like what I saw from Filipe over the last two Summer camps.

Guys, can you talk to me about Gauthier and Roy? Are they locks to play? What's the upside?

Neither is a lock to play regularly this year. I think both are safe bets to be NHL players in the longer term.

Upside for Gauthier, IMO, is something of a bigger Erik Cole type net-driving power forward. I have a hard time getting a bead on Roy.
