East Pacific TD ONE-E is forming in the Gulf of Tehuantepec.

(That is a treacherous place; I was on a cruise -- i.e., big cruiseliner -- from Acapulco to Costa Rica and as soon as we hit that area the wind shifted and was near gale force. Waves breaking up on the pool deck at the top of the ship.)

Super typhoon Nepartak about to hit Taiwan

I was reading that the typhoons usually weaken significantly before they hit the majorly populated area of Taiwan due to all of the mountains in the eastern part of the island.

Is that not the case with this one?
