I was bored, so I wanted to get the final numbers for next year. With absolutely no moves, the Pens right now have $71.1 million committed to 13 forwards, 6 D and 2 goalies with Bennett, Cullen, Zatkoff, Lovejoy and Schultz being free agents. Re-signing Cullen at around the same that he's at now and Schultz for around $1.75 million (seems like a fair guess), demoting Sundqvist to WBS and putting one of Bennett or Sprong on the 3rd line (assume equal salary) adds an extra $2.5 million or so to that. Let's just say we'll be at $73.6 million with 14 forwards and 7 D.

With this hypothetical, we wouldn't have much flexibility with trading Kunitz. I think in order for us to get a noticeable upgrade on Kunitz, we're going to have to trade one of Bonino or Fehr. Trading Kunitz and Bonino/Fehr and recalling Sundqvist would give us 14 forwards again, but with the ability to add up to a $5.25 million winger from Kunitz and Bonino (or $100k more with trading Fehr). Without trading either of those 2, we're basically stuck with adding a $4.25 million winger with trading Kunitz. Not exactly much space to play with there.

I put the estimates up at the top, but obviously players like Sheary and Sundqvist aren't locks for the roster.

The $74M ceiling being referenced by news outlets assumes that the NHLPA once again approves using the escalator. Otherwise it's likely to be right around the same number as this past season ($71.4M).

I still think Pens should bring in Helm if he's going to hit UFA. Other then that, not much else we can do. Bones/Fehr/Kunitz gone for cap space, Lovejoy walks, Cole stays...for now. Keep bringing in guys who can help with what we are building, trade those who do not fit this. Eventually we will have the perfect roster we want, keep our picks and turn them into speedy goal scoring wingers, playmaking wingers, speedy offensive dmen

what position would you see Helm in here? And who would he be replacing?

It depends.
Is Kunitz moved?
Did Cullen re-sign?
Is Bones or Fehr moved?
Is Beau healthy and playing LW in the top 6?

Depending on all of the above, he could be anywhere from 3/4C to LW on any line.

The only reason to bring in a bottom 6 C is that we trade someone AND we can't re-sign Cullen. And even then, we'd still have two bottom 6 Cs, with the guy we sign pushing Fehr or Sundqvist to wing or out of the line-up.

And no to Helm as a LW. We don't need bottom 6 wings, and he's not good enough for top 6 LW.

Helm makes the most sense as a Bonino replacement, but I think he'll make too much. The speed of Hagelin - Helm - Kessel would be out of this world, but I'm not sure if it's a good fit otherwise.

We really can't get an even more expensive 3rd line center if we're already playing Hags and Kessel on the third line.

And imo, if we move Bones or Fehr, it will be because we sign Cullen and are happy with Sundqvist. I don't think adding an outside bottom 6 player will really even be on our radar.

Theres bare bones = 69.457M
Addition Estimates = Beau(7-800k) + Schultz(1.5-2) + Cullen(1) = 72.657M-73.257M
LTIR Cap Relief = close to 3.75M = 68.907M-69.507M
74M Cap would give us 4.493M-5.093M to spend without any cash going out. Add another 1M if Cullen signs elsewhere.

It'd help us if we moved one of Bonino or Fehr.

Just don't really think he brings much more than they do and would probably be over 2 mil.

We would have to move both. Honestly, see little reason why we would be all that interested in him considering what he'll get as a UFA.

Does anyone know a lot of about Vrbata? He seems like the perfect type of sniper we could use for either Crosby or Malkin. I guess he's similar to Jokinen/sykora. As far as the Penguins price range is going to be he might be the best fit.

He did hit 30 goals two season ago and did it once before but he's always going to be 35 this summer.

Hes been terrible this year and hes another soft player. Not someone the Pens should be targeting.

I'm in favor of keeping Cole around. He can play LD and RD. Pretty low maintenance. Physical presence while still fitting in with the type of game we want to play.

Maatta-Letang
Dumoulin-Daley
DP-Cole
Schultz

If Schultz sticks around he probably plays ahead of DP. And if that's the case, we have a natural RHD to play with Dumoulin longterm and a trade candidate in DP to move for an upgrade on LW.

Plus, I think Cole's presence makes Lovejoy sticking around less likely. Ill take Cole all day over Lovejoy.

Keep Cole unless we need the cap space. And probably move Bones before Cole. He'll bring more back, and we can replace him from within.

our biggest need is a big, nasty, smooth skating, defense man that can also make that nice first pass......every team must have at least two or three and they should be very easy to get because Anaheim got one for lovejoy

I want to take a second and give credit where it due. Yes since Malkin was hurt Bonino has done a good job filling in and Kessel has taken off. But that is not what is making the real difference. The bottom six since Malkin went down (12 games)...

Cullen - 4g, 5a
Kunhackl - 3g, 7a
Rust (9) - 1g, 3a
Fehr - 3g, 4a
Sheary - 3g, 1a
Bennett (7)- 1g, 1a
Sundqvist (5) - 1g, 1a

Total 16 goals and 22 assists in 12 team games. When your getting that kind of production from your bottom 6 your gonna win a lot of games. For reference, over an 82 game schedule that would equal 109 goals and 150 assists, an average of 18-25-43 plus change per player.

Thanks for pointing that out. I knew our bottom 6 was doing well - but I didn't think they'd done that well.
