The Pens have many issues. Developing players has never been one of those issues. Hynes was an excellent coach for us in WBS and had a huge impact at getting our few good prospects to the NHL. It's totally a drafting issue, we don't even remotely have a development issue.

How many players has he developed since he has been there?

Maatta came straight up to the NHL, Pouliot only 1 year, two for Harrington

Most of the players we have in WBS are older players.

Players like Gibbons, Conner, Megna were developed nicely. They had exactly zero NHL chances when they started. They were developed into at least servicable bottom 6 NHLers by the system. Can't polish every stone into a diamond.

Given the type of players WBs has been given, they've done a nice job elevating players, too bad they haven't been given any good players.

Don't know if his ship has sailed but I still like Killorn for Malkin. Long term solution. Could have been had a year ago for some guy in Anaheim.

I remember both sides being positive on it.

Fans being okay with a trade, doesn't mean a trade would happen.

The Bolts acquired a better player in Coburn anyways, and kept Killorn, they're team is better for it instead of moving Killorn for Despres.

People were discussing offer sheeting Saad at the end of the last thread. I don't think it's a bad idea. We would probably need to trade our second rounder this year for our second rounder next year (Toronto has it). Toronto is looking to get more picks this year, so that may be something they are interested in.

The other issue is that it would likely take 6.5 mill/year for 5+years to prevent Chicago from matching. If that's something we did do, we would not have a lot of room under the cap. We would then likely need to trade Kunitz and hope Dupuis is done if we do that or we won't be able to sign another top 6 winger.

Stafford (4.25 mill) -Crosby-Horny
Saad (6.5 mill) -Malkin-Perron
Comeau (2.5 mill) -Sutter-Bennett
Wilson-Lapierre-Rust

Letang-Maatta
Cole-Pouliot
Lovejoy-Dumoulin
Chorney

God that top 6 looks awesome though I doubt it would ever happen.

To the person in the last thread who was saying that compensation levels have changed, do you have a source on that? Because articles I've seen from about two or three weeks ago were reporting the top range of the 1st and 3rd compensation to be the 5.4.

Speaking of assets for sale, can we sell our HFBoards accounts?

Mine is lightly used, has decent street credit (est 2004), and has some nice predictions that turned out to be accurate (namely Staal). For the right buyer, this would be an absolute steal. :sarcasm:

Imagine that... Malkin is frustrated as Hell and not entirely happy after a decade of flanking guys like Fedotenko, Comrie, Comeau, etc. He finally gets a promising, young winger in Neal who he instantly develops chemistry with and turns him into a 40g scorer, and then Neal's moved (not a trade I disagree with, but still).

Not exactly a surprise.

How about Dougie Hamilton? I know we need wingers, but with the trade of Despres, the Pens need a top 4 defenseman. Boston doesn't have a lot of cap space either.

Edit - As an offer sheet, I mean.

Friedman - But I can tell you this – there are people around the league who have been saying they’ve been hearing rumors Malkin is not happy and would welcome a change of scenery.

http://www.todaysslapshot.com/from-the-ice/friedman-on-rumors-malkin-isnt-happy/

Welcome to every offseason since 2007. Where's friedman from? Canada? Ah yes, and what team would be a good fit for Malkin.

"Why, Toronto or Montreal, of course!"

This happens every year. The Penguins lose, Canadian media conjures up some story about how Malkin is unhappy OR the organization is unhappy with Malkin, and then they try to come up with some BS deal that unfailingly always centers around either Tyler Bozak, Nazim Kadri, or Brendan Gallagher.

If we still had our second for next year it'd be a lot more probable. Chicago will probably match what someone offers, but then they'll have to bank on teams being willing to help them out by moving Sharp and Bickell without taking back any salary at all. After that, they'll still have to get a little creative to fill out the roster.

With the team potentially up sale, it will be interesting to see the direction the team wants to go in this year. Are Burkle and Lemieux willing to spend the potentially big bucks its going to take to bring in help...or is the "youth movement" more about cutting salary?

With that, I submit the team (owners telling GMs) would rather play Sundqvist and Kapanen in the Top 6 rather than go after a Semin/Kessel/high $$ player. Could be a reason they are hesitant to move Kunitz. $3.85mil for a scoring winger may not be "that bad" in their eyes. Perhaps keeping him rather than risking a trade flop may be part of a risk adverse standpoint.

Be interesting to see how they approach this offseason. Tell ya what, young cheap Euro/NCAA talent is what I would be after.

I don't think the second is really our issue, we can always get it back by swapping our second this year. The problem is our own cap situation and our management actually making an offer that Chicago can't match.

I will add that if there was ever a time to do this, a time where we have two additional third next year would be a good time. Additionally we don't know that we will get picks this year if we trade Kunitz, sutter, spaling etc. Maybe they bring back some pucks next year and make this all the more viable.

He probably just frequents this board and is increasingly depressed and alarmed at the majority of the hypothetical lines people are putting together around him.

These rumors crop up every offseason seemingly monthly. It would be interesting if it finally meant something, for a change. But I seriously doubt it. Malkin doesn't have enough gumption to actually tell the team what he thinks, anyway. If he's fine with playing wing on Blackhole Sutter's hip for 20+ games... he's probably fine with anything.

No, that compensation chart is outdated. Here is the new compensation for RFAs, which was established a year or so ago:
