This team is turning into the Minnesota Wild for me. A team that will make the playoffs every year in a lower seed but have no real shot at winning. A team that has some dynamic players but is basically no flash and all grind.

Other than Crosby, Malkin, Letang and a brief stint with Hossa/Neal, they never were a flash team outside of those players.

I wish they were alil like the wild, at least they have some good young talent. Granted the Vanek contract stinks but hey we got at least 5 contracts that suck.

Curious about these 5 contracts. I count 2: Scuderi and now Kunitz I suppose. Who else? Spaling?

This off-season would be a tremendous success if they could just get all of Scuderi's cap hit off the books, trade him for a conditional 7th to some cap floor team like ARZ.

Dupuis',honorable mention to Sutter, I understand that's Goin rate for a guy who hovers around 20 good pk etc etc,I just feel it's bad allocation for a 3c when you're rosters so top heavy against the cap

Dupuis' contract will only be a problem if he plays and is misused, so you can't call it a bad one yet. The likelier outcome is that he gets Pronger'd for the rest of his career, and then it's at worst a neutral contract. The Kunitz contract was only bad because of the terrible year he had; if he was still producing like he had last year it would be well worth it. In fact, I bet other GMs see the potential for Kunitz to return to form as a justification for a manageable cap hit like that. Dupuis hasn't had the chance to have a terrible year like Kunitz and may never will at this point.

I have no problem with Sutter's contract for what he produced this year. I still want him off the team but it's not because of his contract. Now, his next contract has the potential to be a disaster, and I hope we are not the team to give it to him.

Dupuis, Spaling. Kunitz, Scuderi

I don't like Sutter or Lovejoy as players, but their contracts are fine. If people want to quibble over Spaling, I get it, 2.2 is nothing, but I'd rather spend that money elsewhere.

I agree with Spaling. If it were like a million less, I'd be fine with it. I don't think the Dupuis contract is bad unless he plays again (and sucks).

What would be nice is a power forward for once. Or at least someone that plays big and hits. M. Foligno fits. Or I'd be happy with a guy like Chiasson.

As nice as that would be, if we for whatever reason have to pick one or the other, I'll take speed over power. We could use both, but I think we need speed more.

If any one of Dupuis', Scuderi's or Kunitz's contract was our worst contract, we'd be in a pretty good spot. But all three of them together is what really makes it bad.

But that's why it's bad in my mind. I don't think he's going to return at a consistently-high level, and I don't think he'll retire quietly, which means the contract is going to eat up a large chunk of space and they have no idea what they'll get.

You trade Lovejoy but you keep Scuderi.

I hate the Despres/Lovejoy trade but keeping Scuderi over Lovejoy is even worse.

What are peoples thoughts on a Foligno and Hodgson addition?
Could be a way for the pens to ship off Scudari in the trade.

At least Scuderi was at one point a top four defensemen. Lovejoy is a marginal NHLer at best.

Lovejoy is at worst an equal player to Scuderi at 1/3 of the cost. Sure, Scuds used to be better. But that really doesn't matter at this point. Even if you want to argue Scuds is a bit better, he's certainly not enough better to be worth the extra cap hit. They are both 3rd pairing players. At least Lovejoy only costs 3rd pairing money.

Salary definitey hurts with Scuds, but I'd argue he didn't look out of place in a third pairing. I don't think Lovejoy looked good in any game since he came over outside of when DP was playing great on that California swing.

Lovejoy will most likely be out of the league in two years. I think Scuderi finishes his contract before retiring.

I hate Lovejoy with a burning passion but I also think he's easier to move. We're not getting rid of Scuds without salary coming back so I left him for now. Besides, that line up is more about the forwards.

The only time Scuderi has consistently looked good at ANY point in his second stint as a Penguin was when he was being propped up by the guy we traded for another Scuderi.

Lovejoy is awful but I think he at least can be PROBABLY be just good enough if he is micromanaged and has the right partner. Scuderi is a sucking black hole of hockey misery.

I'd rather pay 3rd pairing money for a 3rd pairing player, even if its a slightly worse player. That said, I still disagree that Lovejoy is a worse player. I mean, they both suck. So its really not worth discussing because it will just make us sad
