</p>The Vancouver Canucks prospects pool might be the least of the franchise’s worries at this moment in time. Ranked right in the middle of the league prior to the 2015 NHL Draft, the group boasts some areas of strength but fails to inspire much confidence on the whole. There is some quality (especially at center) and some quantity (especially on defense) and the Canucks added more of both to the prospect pool.

Draft weekend in Sunrise, Florida yielded some decent bets.… read more

This from the article should be required reading for Benning and company and has been promoted by myself and other posters then shot down for a couple of years.

The last place any franchise wants to be is stuck in the middle: barely missing the playoffs or barely making an impact or barely missing out on franchise-changing talents around whom a smart management group can establish some dominance.

Maybe another middling season can make some people see the light?

It will be interesting to see how UND's new mascot will affect Boeser's development. This factor wasn't discussed much leading up to the draft.

Its funny because for the first time in forever, people are excited about our prospect pool...

Yet there just really isn't anything to get that excited for. Sure, Bo looks like he'll be a good player... Virtanen has tools to be a solid piece... McCann could be a 2nd line center...

But we just don't have those guys who project as franchise players... no building blocks like a Toews/Doughty/Stamkos etc

If we'd had the 6th overall pick in the Monahan draft (Monahan + Horvat) I would be a bit more excited... but we really don't have those franchise builders you need to be successful.

The West is so strong we actually have a shot at a top 3 pick. I'm not saying it's likely, but it's certainly possible.

To be honest if one if Henrik, Edler, or Tanev gets injured for any significant amount of time, we're basically a shoe in for a top 5 pick. This team is very fragile. Absolutely EVERYTHING would have to go perfectly right for is to even be in the hunt for the 8th playoff spot in the West.

This complaint could be made about so many teams' prospect pools that it's meaningless. If you're including Bo as a prospect at this point, his apparent potential is higher than most teams' top prospect. With rare exceptions, only awful teams draft potential superstars, yet many of the best prospect pools in the league belong to the best and best-managed teams. If you can't get excited about depth, variety and a lot of overall skill in a prospect pool, you should start watching another sport.

Another way to look at it, with the current prospect ranking polls going on here the guys available at #20 on are comparable 5-10 years ago to the options available at 10 on.

People just like to focus on what isn't there, but it's also very important to be frequently graduating regular NHL'ers to the pro team, a luxury we've been missing for a lot of years.

You need franchise players more than you need "depth, variety and overall skill".

Vancouver doesn't have those in their prospect pool, which is why are pool is middle of the pack.
