It's nice that they're putting Pat Burns in, but they should have done it a few years ago when he was still alive.

The NHL has the most permissive Hall of Fame. I don't know why people care about too many players going in, it is what it is. It's not like going by point totals and awards represents purity, anyhow. The real travesty is that it basically ignores all the great non-NHL hockey because it's run by the NHL.

Unorthodox Hasek dominated on way to Hall of Fame
[NHL]665245[/NHL]

If the awards and records don't say it, the nickname certainly does.

Dominik Hasek was known as The Dominator for good reason.

At the peak of a career that will see the 49-year-old inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday, Nov. 17, Hasek won six Vezina and two Hart trophies with the Buffalo Sabres and a gold medal with the Czech Republic at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, the first with NHL participation. He added two Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings before retiring with the highest NHL career save percentage at .922.

Perhaps the only thing more remarkable than Hasek's often-dominant career is how close it came to never happening. Arguably the best to play the position, Hasek came really close to not doing so in the NHL.

@BuffaloSabres

#Sabres legend Dominik Hasek receives his @HockeyHallFame ring in Toronto. Official induction on Monday.

Hasek says when he got the call to say he was inducted, he didn't recognize number, couldn't hear them & said "Call me later." -@ChrisRyndak

UNIQUE STYLE AND UNRELENTING COMPETITIVENESS DROVE HASEK TO GREATNESS
Former Sabres goaltender will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday

For someone who never had a goalie coach growing up, Dominik Hasek ended up with a successful career.

During his years playing in the NHL, “The Dominator” won six Vezina Trophies as the League’s best goaltender, two Hart Trophies as the League MVP, two Stanley Cup rings and an Olympic gold medal.

And now, he has a plaque hanging up in the Esso Great Hall in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Monday night, he’ll be officially inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame along with fellow players Rob Blake, Peter Forsberg and Mike Modano, referee Bill McCreary and the late coach Pat Burns.

“When you play hockey, you never think about,” Hasek said in Toronto on Friday. “You play hockey to win the game. You play hockey to win the last game of the season or to win the game for your country. That’s what hockey’s about.

“But once you retire and you start to think about it and you are selected like one of these [263] players and you feel like I am one of them, it’s definitely a great honor.”

Hasek loved playing against the game's best

Pat LaFontaine witnessed some of Dominik Hasek's most amazing saves as teammates with the Buffalo Sabres, and he helped welcome "The Dominator" to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

LaFontaine said that Hasek made saves he had never seen before that day and he will never see again. He said "The Dominator" is a perfect nickname for Hasek, because he could truly dominate a game like few individual players could. Everyone on the Sabres roster played with a higher level of confidence when they knew Hasek was behind them.

LaFontaine said the city of Buffalo is a great sports city and the people there adore their heroes. He said Hasek is an iconic figure there and for good reason.

One of Hasek's greatest traits was his work ethic. LaFontaine said Hasek played like he practiced, and the stories were legendary and all true of how he competed to stop the puck even in practice.

LaFontaine talked about Hasek's performance in the 1998 Nagano Games. He said the goalie had started to receive the recognition he deserved before those Olympics started, but after the Czech Republic won the gold, "from that moment on the world knew how great he was."
