He's probably put almost no work into his upper arms up to this point in his life. That's not too uncommon for players his age. Look at McDavid, he probably has strong legs but his arms are like noodles.

It's obviously not a good thing, but it doesn't factor in to whether you take him at #2 or not. It more factors in to whether you keep him up or not, as indicated in the above comment.

Top prospects Bennett and Kapanen survive Combine
Forwards Samuel Bennett of the Ontario Hockey League's Kingston Frontenacs and Kasperi Kapanen of KalPa in Finland's SM-liiga certainly had their share of good and bad moments during the fitness stage of the 2014 NHL Scouting Combine at Toronto International Centre on Saturday.

The good news is that both blue chip prospects completed all the required tests in the morning. The bad news is they each "lost it" after undergoing the grueling VO2 Max bike test that measures the endurance capability of a player's heart, lungs and muscles.

"The bikes were interesting," Bennett said. "I didn't really hear the people shouting at me too much. I was more focused on my burning legs. I guess they were there to motivate and it helped a little.

"I didn't hold down my breakfast too well."

Haha. I am a gym rat as well. Pullups are not my strong suite but I can do like 20 strict ones at one sitting. You cannot pull yourself up once when you have such low BF and weigh so little. Crazy! Yeah I agree it definitely doesn't have anything to do with hockey, aside from having really bad upper body strength along the boards. Just another reason he needs to go back to juniors, he will get eaten up with the way he plays in the NHL.

Yeah man I'm in bulk mode at 208 and my last chinup working sets were 65x6/4/3, I don't know how any elite athlete can't do one god damn pullup, he isn't Byfoog status. He's probably had a trainer the last few years with the Fronts and in the off season, whoever drafts him needs to leave him in Juniors with his playing style.

Ekblad is a pretty vanilla guy but he can handle a camera interview with media better than any draft eligible player I've seen. A lot of guys struggle talking to just one guy and Ekblad looks like he could have given the same interview with 50 people that he did with 10.

I really think that he gets taken 1st overall.

Eh, this has been the knock on Bennett for most of the year. I don't think any teams knew he couldn't do a push up (or care) but it's old news that he needs to lose some baby fat and bulk up. By the time he's in his 2nd or 3rd year I suspect he will have put on 20lbs of muscle. He's going to have a similar body type to Stamkos when all is said and done.

I just completed my bulk from 178 to 195 lbs. I have pictures of the transformation, going to post over in the Fitness portion of this forum. For anyone interested in my bulk cycle.

Stamkos had a long way to go too

Yeah, I just hope Bennett has the same insane worth ethic Stamkos does. Stamkos is so driven to be the best in the league. If you watch his training segments you can tell the dude is an animal in the gym. It's something you can't teach.

Yep, Reinhart and Bennett are very good compared to most top prospects and very well spoken but Ekblad takes it to another level. A team is getting a 6-4 210 pound defenceman that can "plug and play" into your top 4, from what i've seen a heard all indications point to him being a top pair guy before he turns 20. I know that might seem crazy to some but his maturity in both his game and demeanor is far advanced from any prospect i've even seen since following the draft. Which is extremely impressive, the team that drafts him is most definitely getting a key cog and future captain. I honestly think even the Sabres if given the chance would really have to think long and hard about taking him. If there is a 18 year old player that truely looks ready to play in the NHL, it's him. The thought of having Aaron Ekblad as our key cog for the next decade+ is exciting, but so is the prospect of the forwards.

He is definitely a rare breed, it's so uncommon to have a player like him come out of the draft. He is what you see in the NFL draft. I think with him the bust factor is almost 0, he is a sure thing. At #2 we are in a phenomenal position.

On the bennett not being able to do a pull up, who cares. I almost look at it as a positive because he is one of the strongest players on the puck i've seen in the junior level and he isn't even physically mature yet. That bodes well for him, he can add some muscle to his frame still and maybe be a 200lb player down the road. I am interested to see his measurements because he definitely looks taller then last time I saw him. He looks like the type of player that can make some gains, he isn't built like a Nugent-Hopkins who was rail thin.

I agree. I'm definitely not implying Bennett will end up like Stamkos, just that it's hard to look at how these kids are today and project whether they'll be beasts or not. It's obvious with the huge guys like Ritchie and Ekblad, but you never know with the rest. Some of the short guys may end up with legs like St. Louis, but most won't. With average guys like Bennett and Reinhart, there's really no telling how strong they'll be or who will be stronger.

Hodgson was probably similar in stature to those guys when he was drafted (too lazy to look). He obviously has the work ethic because he is part of the Gary Roberts camp, and he's become much stronger each offseason. I'd assume either of those guys are at least capable of getting to Hodgson's listed weight of an efficient 192.

FYI Bennett is going to be working out with the same trainer (Andy O'Brien) this summer as Nathan MacKinnon, Jeff Skinner, Sidney Crosby, John Tavares, Matt Duchene and others. All those guys are similar body type as Bennett coming out of juniors and have all reached the 200lb mark while only being in the 6'-0". There have actually been a few players who have left the Roberts camp to go over with him as he is probably the best right now. Working out with those players should only help him, especially with the guidance he will be receiving.

I'm all aboard the SR over SB train, that said:

Any basketball fans remember when a big deal was made out of Durrant's deplorable showing of weight lifting at the combine? He basically just couldn't lift a lot at all. Like at a pathetic level. Turns out it didn't matter much....

Taking another look at Draisatl. I've been mostly focused on Sams but I don't think Draisatl is out of the equation. Seems like he's got the playmaking of Reinhart, the feistiness of Bennett and the size that neither Sam has. Is his skating good enough? That's the question. What if the Sabres think the answer is yes?

He scored at just about Reinhart's pace on a worse team. Can anybody comment on his defensive awareness?

you guys think i got the bad end of the deal i made? :amazed:

I dunno but im pretty sure you under appreciate the value of a solid #2C. Being a Montreal fan i value players like Plekanec, Horvat etc extremely highly, these are the guys you go to war with. I know you're are stacked on D but adding players who can help insulate your younger Dmen was a necessity in my eyes (also i traded Ehrhoff so i needed a minute eating Dman). I envisioned Risto - Myers as your first pair, Zadorov - Tanev as your 2nd pair and McCabe - Pysyk as your 3rd pair. Also, Chris Tanev is a 24 year old RD who played in Vancouver's top 4 this year against their toughest competition. He takes the most defensive zone faceoffs out of all their D, he has an underrated offensive game AND he ended up in top 20 for GA/60 mins.. hes not just some "other D".

I don't have a doubt in my mind that Reinhart is going to be an awesome NHL player but the same could be said about Nylander and Ehlers. The players i got back are the type of guys you build a line-up around, you can't just draft high-end guys and stick them into your line-up if you don't have any structure, or else you just end up like Edmonton (and i know Edmonton is rebuilding the wrong way by overloading on forwards while u guys did it the right way by going D first). The way you speed up a rebuild is by maximizing your return on a few prospects, be it by drafting well in the later rounds or trading higher-end players for a high quantity of solid players, i felt like the value i got for trading 4 spots down was too good to pass up on, sorry if you don't feel the same way.

I think you'll find a lot of us in agreement about the importance of not just relying on high end guys to save the franchise, but you'll also find that many of us also already love our secondary depth. Ennis, Girgensons, Hodgson, Grigorenko, Compher, Larsson, all could be 2C's down the road, and we've got tons of good prospects at all other positions. Not that we wouldn't love to add Horvat and/or Tanev (played college locally so many are familiar) to the mix, but the thing we don't have at this point is the top end guys. We've been waiting for the opportunity to get a Reinhart/Bennett/Draisatl. Most won't be happy about giving that up. Speaking for myself, I would not be in favor of that.

But no need to apologize. It's all in good fun. Now, if you'd taken Perlini, we might have a problem... :sarcasm:

sure but having depth in the 2 most important positions in hockey (C and D) is not bad thing. Horvat is gonna turn into an elite 2way C, there aren't alot of prospects like him. And like i mentioned you can always trade your prospects and strengthen areas of need, center's and dmen dont go for cheap.
