Cautiously optimistic is how I would describe my feelings about McGinn. I kind of agree with impeachestallo in the other thread. It feels like he is getting pretty overrated. I like how he's tracking, and he does play a very translatable style, but we've had our hearts broken before. This will be a big year for him.

I'm not sure that he's getting over-rated as much as our prospect pool is so weak so anyone that looks like they might have translatable skills is going to be up there. Most all of them are questionable as to whether they'll ever be an NHL regular. The thing to me that is a bit different re: McGinn vs. other prospects that have broken our hearts before, is that scoring /offensive skill isn't what got him drafted in the first place by the Canes. He was drafted because he was a hard working, hard nosed, two-way player that projected to be a 3rd / 4th liner with the dreaded "intangibles". The fact that he is showing some offensive skills is kind of a "cherry on top" IMO, but even if that offense doesn't translate to the NHL level, the rest of his game "should" allow him to be an NHL contributor on some level.

And age level or not, I like to see prospects make improvements y-y as they age/develop. Murphy really didn't, and some of the other guys like PDG, Rask, Biega, etc.. haven't. That concerns me.

Pesce - Is very much a Doumoulin type player when we had him. Sound defensive game, possibly some offensive upside, but looks very capable of having a top 4 upside here eventually even if it doesn't pan out based on his defense alone. Only question mark right now is his skating (biggest reason he didn't make the US WJC team, which IMO was the fastest team at the WJC), and IMO it's not a big question mark with him, dude's nowhere close to Hal Gill or Doug Murray slow.

This is surprising to hear Dave. Based on things I've read (granted, I haven't seen him play), he's been categorized as a "good" to "excellent" skater and haven't seen anywhere where skating was said to be a negative other than maybe some comments about a choppy start. What is it about his skating that you find sub-par? With Dumoulin, while he had/has decent speed at top end, his footwork, pivots, etc... were definitely noted as an area that needed work.

"He's not flashy at all. He makes plays that make him seem flashy at times because he skates so well. He battles in the corners so well and he does the little things that make him a great hockey player. He's not a huge goal scorer even though he turned into one this weekend," said UNH captain Eric Knodel.

He is an excellent skater with speed, agility, great feet, and skates equally well both north-south and east-west.

Rangy defenseman who skates well and has an active stick

Pesce shows the ability to play an effective shutdown game, due to his good stick positioning, aggressive physical style, four-way mobility, and overall quality defensive reads. He is an active player, as he is always engaging the opponent, waving his stick to interfere with passing lanes, or moving his feet. While Pesce is mobile, his stride can be a little short, which is admittedly a nitpick, as he does get good power from his legs.

The strong defensive game is built around Pesce’s skating. He has great pivots, edgework, and agility, which gives him really good mobility on the ice. He is able to make quick cuts and changes in directions in all 360 degrees. Pesce has good top end speed both forwards and backwards, generated from a long and powerful stride. However his startup is sometimes a bit choppy, and this can rob him of his acceleration at times. He is strong on his skates and has decent balance, but it can be improved if he can add some lower body muscle.

So then what are the chances that he will be in the NHL this year?

What are the chances that BD58 will stop with the lame attempts at the dumb and dumber joke before the season starts?

Just going off what I've seen and what I've heard the reasoning for his cut from the WJC team was. As I said, it's no big issue for him for sure, dude's not Doug Murray or Hal Gill or anything like that. He's going to be a good one IMO.

I'd consider his skating good, whereas with Slavin I would outright call it plus level.
