Took an estimated guess at the opening night roster in the OP with Bennett and Bortuzzo opening on LTIR to carry Kapanen and Harrington.

The Pens really have no cap space. There has to be a trade at some point.

Yah, but you've got some moving parts that can swap back and forth with a minimum of cap difference.

Bennett and Kapanen
Bortuzzo and Harrington

And you're back in business. Both those guys are out for a couple of weeks at least before you even need to do those swaps. If we have any injuries to a vet that will be LTIR, then that gives you space too.

With that lineup of forwards, I don't see how you play Adams, so that's good. They're not keeping KK or Sundqvist to make them a healthy scratch, and Comeau played a ton better than Adams in the preseason. So no way Adams suits up with that forward roster.

It will be interesting to see what happens when a couple of guys get hurt with day to day, game time decision type injuries.

Our actual cap space would be slightly different due to LTIR weirdness. Geno and Maatta won't be out of the lineup long enough to be on LTIR, they will be scratches for a game or two. I'd imagine Sundqvist will be hoping to make himself indispensable, forcing Adams off the roster once Geno comes back.

Most likely, once Bennett and Bort come back Harrington and Kapanen are returned to their teams. The other possibility being that they play their way onto the roster and we try to move Scuds and Adams. Far more difficult to do though so they would have to absolutely blow us away.

At this point, I think the Pens have to seriously moving Martin for wing help. I still think Martin for Anaheim for a package involving Palmieri/Silfverberg and another young forward makes sense. Maybe Palmieri and Rakell for Martin?

That would be too much for Anaheim to give up for an impending UFA. Also, we'd have to take salary back, likely in the form of Bryan Allen :)help:). Silf and Racks are very intriguing though.

JR said he's only keeping 21 guys on the roster.

When did he say this? That's concerning, because that probably means that Harrington will get sent down to start the season.

Idk, Boychuk just went for 2 2nds and a 3rd. If we were looking for purely picks, I bet we could get a 1st and a 2nd at least for Martin. I feel like Palmieri and Rakell isn't much more valuable than a 1st and 2nd.

Does anyone even know what the Hell is up with Geno?

The fact that he's just started light skating and off-ice workouts has me pretty ****ing worried.

I'm almost positive its something like a groin pull. Something that heals just fine if given time, but is horribly uncomfortable and really just requires you to wait it out.

Judging by what Johnston was talking about, also the fact that Maatta is back to taking contact and being in normal drills...I think someone is being sent down and it's likely Harrington, even though the pairing of him and Martin is something Johnston supposedly likes, he also stated that Despres is comfortable playing on the right side and I am sure we all know Ehrhoff and Letang are likely being paired together.

I'd guess...

Ehrhoff, Letang
Maatta, Martin
Scuderi, Despres

Despres & Martin both are comfortable playing on the right side.

Then when Bortuzzo is back, Rutherford is forced to make a decision with Scuderi, hopefully the one we are all hoping for.

It seems rather bizarre that they've kept the info hidden though, even with Orpik, Kunitz and even Sid had groin injuries or anything minor or major, we've known about it, the last time we had a huge mystery about an injury was Letang's last year and Crosby's whole neck and head thing.

I really hope that there is no decision to be made with Scuderi, and they are just looking to find a taker. Because there really is no question that we should get rid of him asap.

He did? Kill me now.

He said 21 for the start of the season. That was back before the last preseason game in Detroit. Not sure if anything would have changed that in the last few days.

For what it's worth, Dejan said the other day that it wasn't anything serious and there were no conspiracies afoot. Guess we'll see.

Borts injury gives us some time to find a taker for Scuds. As much as I'd prefer to have Harrington on the roster, it's the ideal situation to get Scuds value back up as much as possible so we can move him at the end of the year. It wouldn't be the worst thing for Harry to train with the big guys for a month and only play an odd game or two anyway. If Scuds sits on the bench, we're not going to be able to move him and as much as Scuds is going to detract from whoever plays with him, being able to actually move him later is worth it.

Yeah, figuring out where to stick Scuderi trying to make him look good is the problem. The best defensemen likely to make him look good are in the top 4 and Scuderi there hurts the team when they're going to be struggling with things. If someone in the bottom pairing gets the job then Scuderi probably won't look as good with them and he'll be 3.375M for a bottom pairing defenseman. One of Maatta back from injury or Despres finally getting a chance (or maybe Harrington in his first NHL experience) will be with Scuderi, or they stick him with Martin/Ehrhoff on the second pairing and handle it.

The only way Scuds will look good is if Martin is playing on his right side, if that's what the team needs to do to move him, go for it. Like I said, I would not mind seeing a Maatta-Despres pairing anyway.

I still think Martin is the guy to move, not Scuderi. Scuderi brings us back nothing in return, and potentially an albatross contract. Martin brings back real value and sheds payroll at the same time. And he's not part of the picture beyond '14-15. It's a no-brainer to move Martin at this point.

The problem is, most GM's prefer to see what they have in the month of October first, so we may be looking at November at the earliest to make this deal.

If we're talking Anaheim, I'm not a Palmieri fan. Nice shot but I don't really like his game. I do like Etem and Smith-Pelly a lot, but I suspect so do the Ducks.

I doubt they'd move Ritchie, but maybe they'd move Nic Kerdiles. Max Friberg is another player I like. I don't think Rackell makes much sense because Sundqvist has a similar skill set and I don't see Rackell as a top sixer.

A young winger like Kerdiles or Friberg, plus a 2015 first for Martin sounds good to me.
