We ought to think about trading for Joe Vitale. Plays for Arizona; real solid 4th liner. Heart and soul kind of guy, and in tune with the force. I'd trade Adams for Vitale in a second. Seems like a win-win if you ask me.

I would drive to Pittsburgh and drive Adams to the airport, fly with him to Arizona, pick up Vitale, then fly him back to Pittsburgh.

I'm gonna miss Vitale.

For WBS, Hartzell has to be starting in the ECHL at this point. I wouldn't mind seeing Zatkoff stay in WBS and mentor Murray, unless a team trades for him. I wonder if Kuhnhackl is redeeming himself a little during the rookie tournament.

Just some fantasy talk here, but what would you guys think of this as a top 6?

Kane-Crosby-Stewart
Kunitz-Malkin-Hornqvist

Kane and Kane lite (Stewart) both can lay the boom and stick up for Crosby. Then have a 3rd line of say Downie-Sutter-BB

I would think very highly of it and like to see it in action. Depth would be insane.

But I don't know what we'd have to give Chicago for Kane. :sarcasm:

Yessir! You repped me a few days ago for getting a little too upset about the hockey thread devolving into a Crosby name calling fest.

I don't post a ton over there. A little more volatile on those boards.

How often do teams play with only a 22-man roster for more than a game or two? We're going to have trouble getting 23 guys under the cap when Maatta returns (or if he is healthy to start the season). If Kapanen or another higher cost ELC is to force their way onto the roster, we'll be literally a few thousand under the cap with a 22-man roster. With our injury history it's not ideal. Maatta may need to spend some time in the AHL just to ensure we don't lose players for nothing.

Same here. Am happy with Goc... who I think is a better player... but will still miss Vitale. I'm just glad that management was smart enough not to go with Sill or someone else as the #4C. JV was taken for granted... but fortunately for us, we got someone who could easily replace him.

I like this fantasy but who did we pawn Dupuis, Scuds and Spaling off on? And I'll sure miss Maatta.

Without a trade getting 23 man roster under the cap is pretty much impossible. The only way to do it is by sending either Bennett or Maatta to AHL but it would be ridiculous to do it just to have either Sill or Payerl sitting on the press box as the 14th forward. So as of right now it's pretty obvious Pens are going into the season with just 22 players on the roster and only reasonable way (without long-term injuries to some more highly paid players) to get that 23rd man under the cap is by making a trade.

Getting rid of Adams and replacing him with Sill and then signing Carcillo to league minimum salary would give the team 22 players and $530k in cap room. So that still quite wouldn't be enough to fit Samuelsson under the cap (he makes minimum salary of $550k). It would be a start but another move would still be required then. And in the current tight cap situation dumping Adams to AHL with his 35+ contract isn't an option. No real cap savings that way and would further just hurt trying to get even 22 players under the cap.

The easiest choice obviously would be to trade Scuderi and getting enough cap savings in the process. The team would need to save atleast $170k on cap. Pens could take a player with a cap hit of $3.2 million in return for Scuderi and then be able to just barely fit 23 man roster under the cap. But ideally they'd like to have some wiggle room as well, since Carcillo might expect closer to $700k, and so that calling up Pouliot, Dumoulin etc. would be easier and that there'd be little space at the trade deadline if needed. So moving Scuderi while taking a cap hit of $2.5 million or less would be the ideal choice from cap perspective. Until that can be done there really isn't much choice but to roll with just 22 players.

It will be complicated for sure. Samuelsson has to be on the roster IMO, because he will not clear waivers. Somebody on the back end will have to go. Maybe even Martin, if nobody wants Scuderi. But I would absolutely hate to lose the best D-Man. Fact is, guys like Samuelsson, Dumoulin and maybe even Harrington and Pouliot deserve their chance.

Trading Martin in highly likelihood wouldn't make the team better this season or get us any good enough (compared to what Martin means to the team and what his real value to the team is) long-term assets so Pens would be better off keeping him. Obviously if the return is good enough, trading Martin should get serious consideration as well because of all the depth the team has on defense, because of the tight cap situation, because of the need for improvement on offense and because of his upcoming UFA-status.

Megna by the way hurt his chances of making the team by taking his QO. He should have done what Samuelsson did and take the minimum NHL salary (probably in exchange for higher AHL salary; Capgeek doesn't have Samuelsson's AHL salary info yet) to improve his chances of making the NHL roster. Right now he would pretty much take all of remaining cap space for the 22nd player on the roster and thus guys like Sill and Payerl have better chances of making the roster as they would leave the team with a bit more wiggle room from cap perspective.

With cap room for just 22 players (13f, 7d and 2g) Samuelsson seems to be headed to waivers as of right now. Gotta have that 13th forward with the team instead of 8th D-man.

AFAIK you can recall players who are subject to waivers freely as there are no re-entry waivers anymore, you just can't send them back down. The point of waivers is to stop teams from sending players to the minor leagues, not prevent them from calling them up. Samuelsson can start the season in the A and be recalled later, but if does he has to stay up or else we'll lose him.

wouldn't he have to get through waivers to make it to the AHL in the first place?

We probably could get Stewart, Kane would be much more difficult. And if we somehow did secure those players, either Sutter or BB would likely be gone along with Maatta or Despres plus a couple draft picks and a salary dump in Scuderi. With Stewart maybe a couple picks and a scuderi gets it done. If Scuds waives his NTC.

Not if assigned before the season starts.

You can't hide players into minors by doing it before the season starts. Doesn't work that way. Would defeat the whole purpose of waiver process.

Samuelsson is waivers eligible and thus he needs to go through the waivers if Penguins want to send him to AHL this season.

I love this line up could we possibly swing it? That top 6 is sick.

We may have to add a 5th in the BUF trade, the value in the Jets trade seems pretty fair. They'd be getting some solid assets there. Maybe they'd want BB instead of Sutter, but that wouldn't be that far off.
