Who do we put with Perry-Getzlaf?

Benn? Duchene? Couture?

Marleau.

Though Duchene should also be on the team as a LW, and Couture is pretty much a lock.

Personally, I don't know why so many people are fans of dump and chase type of players...such as Benn. The TC brass has made this mistake before..speed and skating are pivotal on the big ice.

Getzlaf stickhandling/puck control/playmaking is going to be amazing on big ice...can't wait to watch it although I hope Canada loses :)

Duchene has five points in his last 8 periods. Hopefully he is feeling better and forces himself back up the depth chart. Seems like a lot of spots might go right down to the wire.

No doubt Yzerman has one of the toughest jobs in Canada. One can go from hero to pariah in 4 years (just ask Gretzky).

These are my picks and lines. I went with 5 full forward lines and 7 defencemen. Wingers were selected to play on their stick side(except St. Louis, off-wing seems to work for him). Centres were selected based on face-off ability(Crosby is the worst but he is the best on his line of all Centres).

LW, C, RW
Tavares, Crosby, Stamkos
Nash, Teows, Getzlaf
Duchene, Spezza, Perry
Hall, Bergeron, Seguin
Marleau,Thornton, St. Louis

LD, RD
Keith, Doughty
Bouwmeester, Pietrangelo
Phaneuf, Subban
Weber

G
Price
Luongo
Brodeur

I know some of my picks are not favourites. Spezza is a guy I want there even though his season hasn't been great(neither has Ottawa's as a whole). Geezer line I put together actually deserve to be there, and the team needs some respected veteran guys to be locker room guys. I know I will catch a lot of heat for giving Phaneuf a spot, but only as yin to Subban's yang. Phaneuf never should cross the red line except to go to the bench on a long change. Giving the 3rd goalie spot to Brodeur is purely for sentimental reasons. We need at least one guy with a chance to win his third gold and I like Brodeur sitting in the press box better than I like Iginla on the bench for those purposes. Besides the third goalie is way to much of a toss up to pick from Fleury, Harding, Crawford, Smith, Bernier, etc.

So this is my answer to the question, so what if you could be Stevie Y on Jan 7, 2014?...

MAF now with a GAA below 2. He deserves a spot on this team, if only because he has a familiarity with all the guys and he'll help the chemistry.

Yes. A lot of our players are getting hot at just the right time.

Had he not imploded in the playoffs over the past few years, I think he'd be a lock for the team - maybe even for the #2 spot behind Price.

As it stands, he's fighting an uphill battle but he sure is giving it his all.

9,000 posts total. Why won't you guys just agree on a roster already? It's not gonna matter who the 14th forward is.

Anyway. Have at it, guys.

Too much infighting. At the end of the day, nothing we say here will matter. I look forward to the day when we compare the final roster to our Olympic competition.

Yzerman and Lowe were in Denver and saw Avs-Stars today. Duchene and Benn were the probably targets. Seguin had a good game but he's going to have to wait for his chance, I suspect.

I don't know if you are joking, but some people said the same thing about the 13th forward in 2010 (smaller roster limit last Olympics). It ended up being Toews and we all know how he played during Vancouver 2010.

I think you're right on the money here.

I think Sharp is very close though.

IMO Team Canada will have some role players, one will be a face-off specialist, and one will be an energy third liner, like bergeron and richards for example.. Hard to say who the role players will be in the rest of the bottom 6 but I do think that Subban will make the Team and the D will be stacked as usual, with experience and reliability outweighing youth and skill.

FORWARDS

MSL - Crosby - Stamkos
Duchene - Getzlaf - Perry
Nash - Toews - Tavares
Couture - Bergeron - Giroux
Benn/Sharp

Duchene on the second line is the wild-card. Team Canada may not be sold on his defensive play (which isn't bad, but isn't as good as... well, pretty much everybody else on the list). But he adds a straight-line speed element to that line that can help back off the defense, and then he and the Ducks can go to work on the cycle.

I didn't originally have Giroux on the list, but he's played his way back onto the team IMO. The fact that he can penalty kill as well as play-make and score makes him a good fit on one of the two shutdown lines.

Benn is a good extra as an energy guy, in case the team needs some banging and crashing for whatever reason. Oh, and he's also fast as hell with sick hands at the net, so that helps. Sharp is so versatile that he can slide in pretty much anywhere in the line-up in case of injury or just for the sake of a shake-up, plus he can PK to take some hard minutes away from the other guys.

I think this line-up has a strong balance, which could be important if - like 2010 - the initial make-up doesn't quite work and they need to juggle. You wouldn't be stuck with a line with no speed, or a line that's all finesse and not grit, etc. So for example, say Duchene doesn't work on that second line for whatever reason:

MSL -Crosby - Stamkos
Nash - Getzlaf - Perry
Tavares - Toews - Giroux
Couture - Bergeron - Sharp
Duchene/Benn

Let the young guys soak up the experience to take to their next Olympics, slot them in for shifts when games are under control or you feel like a line needs a boost of straight-ahead speed or extra jam.

Or if they wanted to spread the wealth from the top line and put Sid and Stamkos on different lines so they couldn't be shut down at the same time, then you could have:

Tavares - Crosby - Duchene
MSL - Giroux - Stamkos
Nash - Getzlaf - Perry
Sharp - Toews - Couture
Bergeron/Benn

...basically, I value versatility a lot, :laughs:

DEFENSE

Keith - Weber
Bowmester - Pietrangelo
Vlasic - Doughty
Staal - Subban
Basically, I like a set-up where one D-man is more of the mobile, offensive puck mover, and the over covers his ass as the more physical, conservative stay-at-home guy. Both roles are relative obviously, as all these guys are likely to join the rush in some capacity on the big ice. Also, obviously, I went with guys who will be on their natural side, since it seems important to Team Canada.

Not totally sold on Subban or Staal [yet], so I put them as the bottom pairing. If they move their way up through great play, all the better.
