Traverse City Prospect Tournament Thread (Sept 5-9)

The tournament was wiped out by the lockout this year so the Sabres are the defending champs and you have to think that they will have a great shot at repeating if all their prospects are eligible (can't remember about college players being eligible or being at school already). Just for fun, what do you think the lineup they ice looks like:

Cat Grigs Armia
Larsson Girgs Compher
Nelson Kea Shaller
Bailey Hurley Baptiste

McCabe Leduc
Zadorov Ristolainan
Austin Florentino

Makarov
Ullmark
Peterson

Looking through the 2011 rosters, it looks like the only NCAA players in the tournament were those who graduated in 2011, so I think it's safe to assume that active NCAA players do not participate.

Remember how good Luke Adam was at that tourney? He was head and shoulders above the other prospects. Crazy how fast that fell apart.

Correct, NCAA players will already be at school and are unlikely to participate in the Traverse City tournament in September.

Trying to figure out this possible lineup shows how weak we are on the wing. So many possibles will be Centers shifting over.

Cat - Grigorenko - Armia
Nelson - Larrson - Bailey
Hurley - Girgensons - Baptiste
Schaller - Kea - Locke

Possler

Risto - Zadorov
McNabb - Pysyk
Ruhwedel - JGL

Austin, Crawford, Florentino

Hackett
Makarov

Peterson, Ullmark

Compher, Malone, Navin, and McCabe won't be playing due to their seasons already starting (NCAA). Not sure if the USHL players are able to play or not. Also, there's questions on if players like McNabb who have been in the NHL/AHL are eligible. Last time, I think you could have up to 4 pros on your roster. Age limit is another question.

It will be interesting to see how these guys stack up against the other teams prospects. Last time, our big bodied line of Foligno - Adam - Kassian was able to dominate because of their size, skill, and grit. Don't exactly see any comparable to that with this possible group, but who knows.

Shame about the NCAA guys, love watching this tournament but I think I would have loved it more to be able to see what Compher looks like in comparison to guy closerish to his development level. Always a great tournament though.

i want to see:

Catenacci-Grigorenko-Armia
and
Larsson-Girgensons-Nelson
and
Possler-Kea-Baptiste
and
Hurley-Compher-Bailey

Will Compher be there? I thought the college guys miss this tourney due to the school year having already begun. (Not that it'd be a long trip for Compher, who'll be in Ann Arbor.)

I think Columbus will be our biggest competition in the round robin portion. I hope we beat Carolina 4-3 with Lindholm scoring a hat trick, if for no other reason than the mini-meltdown that would ensue on this board.

I believe that your thought is correct, Compher, McCabe, etc. will not be there due to college. It was definitely the case when we won it 2 years ago.

http://www.beyondtheblueshirts.com/2009/08/traverse-city-prospects-tournament-roster-revealed

Old article but gives info about tournament rules.

Tournament rules allow up to four players with one year of professional experience to participate, but at the moment, the Rangers have only two — Soryal and Weise.

So, you could have four "veterans" with 1-year pro experience.

If this is still correct, Pysyk is eligible, but McNabb isn't as a 2-year pro experience.

Also Armia can't join, because he has been a pro for 3 years in Finland.

Girgensons is only 1-year pro, so he could join.

EDIT:

Let's take it back what I said with Europeans, I found this comment from older Traverse City discussions:

Half of the guys in bold aren't playing because, regardless of age, a player can only have one year of (North American) pro hockey under his belt.

So, being European pro does not flip you out, but at same time, if a prospect is going to start his season at Europe, their national leagues will start at same time. This could mean that Ristolainen won't participate, but Armia should be a lock?

It's also possible to read that sentence as saying you can have up to four players who've had one season or more of pro experience. I don't believe that to actually be the case as I remember between NCAA players + experience exclusions the pickings for the roster were very limited at our last go-round -- as I recall, Lieuwen was the only goalie in our system eligible and available -- but the article's wording is ambiguous to me.

Again, I do still think it's the case that the most pro experience a participant can have is one season, and only 4 such players are allowed. If that is indeed the case, then Ristolainen would be ineligible as well, unless that only applies to North American pro league.

Mods: This thread could probably stand to be merged with the other Traverse Tourny thread (http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showthread.php?t=1470095). :dunno:

Edited the post, found another source (HF Boards poster) for that 1-year pro (North American Hockey) limit.

Those rosters are usually prospects + lot's of invites, because of the restrictions. Nobody is going to have a full team of eligible own prospects.

Gven this information, I'd say that Armia is a definite lock. I wouldn't count Ristolainen out either. Ristolainen may well end up playing in the SM-liiga this season, but it sure seems as if they're going to have him in training camp to compete for a possible spot in the NHL line-up. If that's the case then he might participate, but I suppose there are other factors, including possibly having him work on his military service during that time period.
