http://www.khl.ru/documents/KHL_clubs_salaries_funds_2013.pdf (33 rubles = 1$ US)

I really didn't know they had that much money!

Top KHL payroll = SKA = $38.5 M US.

Wow, I mean, NHL's salary cap was $37 M in 2005/2006

There's a huge gap between SKA and other clubs though. For instance the newly "promoted" Croatian club Medvescak is around $5.4 M, but there's quite a lot of teams in the $20-25 M range.

I'm impressed.

But almost a third of that SKA payroll must be Kovalchuk...

PS: Unless Kovalchuk is listed separately among the "7 KHL stars" below the table?

How come Medvescak Zagreb has such a low payroll with alot of former NHL'ers on the roster?

I was wondering about this too. Riga for example has bigger budget, that means they are really overpaying Latvians who aren't anywhere near nhl. Or am I missing something?

It debunks the myth that former non-European NHL's earn huge money in the KHL. It actually doesn't take a lot to lure them to Europe because when a team like Medvescak matches, for example Cheechoo's, AHL salary he'll still get more after taxes in Europe.

You are missing Ozolinsh salary demands. Also Hossa isn't cheap. Besides these two, both team budgets probably are the same.

Don't know if Hossa is that expensive (after the last season) but anyway he is probably more expensive than Cheecho right after AHL. Despite how good he once was, he's an AHLer now so I doubt he gets huge money. Ozoliņš has a great season last year with Atlant too, so I doubt he's gotten cheaper even despite his age. So yeah, he takes a lot of Riga's money.

Also Indrašis' contract was extended in March 2012 and I believe he agreed to additional two years with Dinamo because of significant increase in salary. Pujacs came from Omsk- can't be cheap either. If you want to sign someone who has spent time in a Russian powerhouse club, you need to open your wallet.

There's also not that many ''NHLers'' in Medvescak's line-up as people are saying. I'd say from forwards few there are even of Riga's Wilson's and Szczechura's caliber (played in NHL at least a game in the 2 previous seasons). Mostly career AHLers or players on decline. I mean from forwards only Murrey and Thomas played at least a game in NHL in 2011-2013 seasons. From Riga the same- Wilson and Szczechura.

The biggest challenge for Medvescak will be to save their players if this season is successful. Nowadays there are more foreign teams in KHL than were when Riga had its first season (and big spenders too) and it means that there might be demand for not only top but more solid 3rd liner foreigners, so next year Medvescak will have the problem of:
1) Best guys asking for adequate salaries or leaving to Donetsk, Jokerit, Minsk, Astana, Lev.... or a Russian club
2) virtually everyone asking more since then they'll be able to compare how much other guys earn in the league

And if the best guys leave to other KHL clubs then you have nothing else to do to pay more to the second rate to at least save the team's core, to build on the achieved result.

Real NHLers do earn good money. Unfortunately for Medvescak, as I said, there aren't really any NHLers on the roster, except for Montador and Foster in defense. This is a bit improved AHL team. Obviously with AHL salaries (or bit bigger).

Just like in NHL where teams are reluctunt to give one way contracts and big money to untested big ice bred Europeans, KHL teams are also reluctunt to give out huge sums of money to untested AHL stars... If it's Wolski, Burmistrov or say Kovalchuk it's one thing, but if it's some guy who played in NHL 8 years ago or was called up for a few games then it's different. Because it's not clear how the players will adapt to big ice, living in a foreign country, playing style etc. The usual problems.

That's why if these guys in Medvescak do well this season, next year it'll be hard for the Croats to keep them. Then they'll already be tested on big ice and will be established players in Europe/KHL.

Medvescak has excellent scouting. They found really good players for reasonable pay every season in EBEL. Sure, when those players proved themselves in Medvescak, richer EBEL clubs poached them away, but Medvescak always found new good players. As for first year in KHL, it was a problem to find players willing to sign with a rookie KHL team. Medvescak manager told in one interview that it took signing of Cheechoo and similar players to get the ball rolling and get interest from players and their agents to sign with Medvescak, even Montador and Foster were among last signings. As for total payroll, Medvescak didn't wan't to break the bank in first season. This season will be season of establishing (hopefully) a good reputation for the team in the KHL, and next season (i'm sure) you'll see a rise in Medvescak payroll, but you can be sure it won't be very big rise.

I believe that these numbers are the teams' Caphits and not their payrolls (a p"payroll" must include the sum of all contracts given to roster players). Their payrolls can be calculated by adding the salary of the caphit exempt "KHL star" that some teams possess. Dmitri Chesnokov said that "Babchuk, Burmistrov, Komarov, S. Kostitsyn, Radulov, Fedotenko & Kocalchuk removed from KHL cap space consideration; will make combined $30m". I used the former NHL payrolls of Babchuk (2.5m), Burmistrov(1.5m), Komarov(1.25m), S. Kostitsyn(3m), Fedotenko(1.75m) and got a total of $10 million. That leaves ~20million left to distribute to Radulov and Kovalchuk. Assuming that the reports are true, Radulov makes 9.2m/year in the KHL. That leaves Kovalchuk with a salary of 11million. I then added the salaries of these players to their respective teams and the result is a solid estimate of what each team's annual payroll is.

From what I understand, the budget is the amount of money paid by a team to all the players on the roster, BEFORE taxes. But we know that Kovalchuk makes over $11 million AFTER taxes, not the same thing. Same for Radulov.

All we know about Kovalchuk is that, according to Medvedev, he gets roughly the same salary BEFORE taxes.

Right, obskyr is correct.

Also, let's not confuse the club's overall budget with a team's payroll, which is just a (smaller) portion of the overall budget.

Thank you for the table, Dallmanator; it's a very useful companion for the season. Very surprised that Slovan are so under-funded.
