[The Couturier Effect]

Meltzer's article on Ghost:

Union College defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere has come a long way since the Flyers drafted him in the third round (78th overall) of the 2012 NHL Draft. He's played for the gold medal winning Team USA at the 2012-13 World Championships. He's increased his production at Union. He's continued to improve defensively, although the converted forward is primarily an offensive-minded Dman. Importantly, he has also added some muscle to his 5-foot-11 frame.

Gostisbehere was listed at 170 pounds at the time the Flyers drafted him. My first impression of him at the Flyers 2012 Development camp was he was that his skill level -- skating, passing and shooting -- was very high but his frame was pretty small and I didn't know how much bulk he could add.

In the time since then, Gostisbehere has worked hard to start building more physical strength, although he's probably not going to a fireplug type like Kimmo Timonen (who, despite his lack of height, has powerful legs and is quite strong pound-for-pound). The main thing is just that he doesn't get physically manhandled when he gets to the professional level.

The Flyers' organization is encouraged by what it's seen across-the-board from Gostisbehere in the year-and-a-half since he was drafted.

"Shayne has gotten bigger and stronger, as have all our prospects since their Draft year. As you know there are guys who are playing in the NHL with varying sizes. When the time comes that Shayne has the opportunity to play at the NHL level, his size will not be an issue," said Chris Pryor, the club's Director of Scouting.

From a defensive standpoint, Gostisbehere will face some adjustments when he gets to the pro level. He takes his share of risks with the puck and relies on his mobility to recover if he turns the puck over and gets caught out of position. Although he's not a big body checker, there is also a bit of a feisty streak in his game.

Offensively, Gostisbehere had strong instincts in reading the play. He already has an NHL-caliber shot from the point and he can thread the needle with many of his passes. He will be a power play defenseman at the pro level, although whether that will be of a first-unit caliber remains to be seen. There's less time and space at the top level.

I only watched the last 5 minutes of the Modo game but I think Hägg maybe got hurt in it.

As he was listed as playing but I did not see him on the ice at all and could not make him out on the bench. (though the stream was awful tbh.)

Examining the boxscore would indicate the same, he played 33 seconds... he usually plays similar minutes to Loov who got ~15 mins.

Maybe just a false alarm and I cannot find anything else about it. Anyone else know anything on this?

I am generally very skeptical of post draft year offense translating to the NHL. Leier is nearly producing at Laughton's pace, is only 3 months older, and no one is claiming he will be an offensive player at the nhl level.

It's been said before but Leier's numbers are likely inflated because of the team he plays for. Portland has been an offensive dynamo for in recent years in the WHL.

Portland is first in the WHL in goals for with 158 goals in 33 games (4.7 per game) while Oshawa is 5th in the OHL with 127 goals in 35 games (3.6 per game).

Portland's a pretty deep team compared to Oshawa who are being carried basically by Laughton, Michael Dal Colle, & Cole Cassels right now.

So from what I can tell, Leier is playing on Laughton's wing for Team Canada. Gotta think they did that partially since they played together abit during Flyers camps. They are both on the 4th line.

"– I’ve seen Anthony Stolarz on video an awful lot over the last few years, but had never seen him in person. I knew he could move, but seeing him live, he is remarkably quick for such a large human. At 6-6, 220, he takes up so much net, but it is his nimbleness between the pipes that makes you see why Philadelphia thought so highly of him to make him a second-round pick in 2012 and what has made him successful in the OHL this year. He is quite a prospect and only will get better as he continues earning high-level experience."

The jittery kid getting his first taste of professionalism looked like an absolutely machine the next year. Kids change and grow quickly within developmental systems all the time, but I hadn't seen anything quite as dramatic as Stolarz in a long time. Raw potential quickly turned into the belief that he was a lot more than just potential. For goaltenders that generally takes longer, so this is a pretty big deal. I really can't say enough about how much his game has changed. His decision to go through the London Knights as opposed to the University of Nebraska-Omaha was pretty crucial.

Now that CAN's nat'l jr team knows it's not getting Morgan Rielly from TOR, Scott Laughton (OSH-PHI) is strong contender to be team captain.

Heard from a few people that they've been turning heads in camp with their smart two-way play and the speed they both possess. Not sure who the right winger will be on the line (there's been mention that Felix Girard is the guy), but would love to see someone like Frederik Gauthier on the line to add a size element to the line.

Whoever ends up on the this line, they're going to give the opposition fits.

He melted down in the memorial cup last year for any number of reasons. London will be back since they host so it will be very interesting to see how he performs this year.

Stolarz hit a wall last year and ran into some fatigue problems. He went from playing sparingly in the NCAA to playing every night with London. I don't think conditioning was a problem as much as it was just getting back into a routine again.

Loving the change in his game this year though. Technically, he's become more proficient at squaring himself up with shooters and he's relying less on athleticism to make saves. He's also been working diligently on improving his puck handling. I know some have reservations with goaltenders, but Stolarz is a legitimate blue chipper. I know some on here have talked about Fucale and others, but Stolarz is right there with them. I know some scouts have called Stolarz the best goaltender in the CHL right now, and that's some pretty heady praise.

Interesting stat. Stolarz SV% is higher this year than last (.926 vs .920) but so his is GAA (2.50 v 2.29)

He doesn't have Olli Maatta or Scott Harrington playing defense in front of him anymore. And London only recently got Nikita Zadorov back for 8 games, so London lost its top three defenders from last year for most the year so far.

Yep. GAA is more of a team stat, while SV% is generally the best indicator when determining how good a goalie is at their job (stopping pucks).

Quite impressive how his SV% has gone up this year while losing their top 2 dmen and their 3rd best dman only playing a handful of games.
