Can you really even call it bad? They got an NHLer of value with their first pick that has played 350+ games in Couturier. Then you got Cousins who is still to be determined but likely will play over 100 games which is a shoe in for a third rounder. So they could end up being 2 for 6 here when all is said & done.

I'm not even gonna look through everyone they passed over from the 4th round onwards, but that Mathers pick stings even more when you look at who went two picks after him...

As a philosophy, picking Mathers types at all is a moronic choice that Hextall has eliminated. In fact, he's probably yet to select a player without skills and upside, at least middle 6 variety.

Not every 7th or late rounder turns into Palat, so that can be forgiven, as long as you are targeting Palat TYPES, hopefully one hitting. But Palat was the linemate of Coots. You know they watched him a ton, and they figured a 7th on Mathers was a better lottery ticket pick. So ****ing stupid. Thank god the days of Goulbourne's and Klotz's in the 3rd are gone.

The Flyers have literally gone decades of getting almost nothing out of the latter stages of the draft. It feels like Hextall is already a better drafter than Holmgren/Clarke and we haven't seen his guys pan out yet.
