Near You!
Each draft year you hear of a goalie.

2010 - Campbell, Pickard
2009 - Koskinen, Lehner
2008 - Pickard, McC, Markstrom
2007 - ... was a sad year
2006 - Bernier, Enroth

etc.

So who are the top goalies for this season? Or will we get a 2007 for goalies?

More of a down year for North American goalies this year (outside of John Gibson). Big year for Euro goalies.

The best Swedish goalie eligible for this draft is by a country mile Magnus Hellberg, who's gotten his first glance of the senior level for Almtuna in the SEL-2. He's an overager for this draft but his size and smooth goaltending technique will get him drafted no doubt.

Out of the other Euro goalies, Samu Perhonen is an intruiging prospect as well, good size and been pretty good for the national teams, even though he's not been tested at the senior level yet.

Christopher Gibson (QMJHL) and Samu Perhonen (Finnish Jr. A) are both finnish and top ranked goalie prospects. Both are big butterfly goaltenders. "Perhonen" even means Butterfly in finnish.

Well, here is my list of 2011 hopefuls. I don’t consider myself an expert on Goalies so there are probably others I have missed. What is scary is the absence of top notch Canadian goalies - it used to be you could count on Quebec to made up for any shortfalls but the Patrick Roy effect has run its course.

The Hellberg size-and-technique-combo is so intruiging, even though he's two years late. I think 29 teams will regret they waited in a few years.

I could see Anaheim drafting at least 2 goaltenders this draft...specially since we are really thin, and who knows what happens with Hiller [granted I wouldn't expect any goalie to come in for at least 4 years]

Ideally we could get Hellberg and C.Gibson as from what I've read they have some good potential.

Lars Volden recently made his debut for the Norwegian Senior team. He actually had a shutout in his first game as Norway lost 1-0 to the Ukraine in a shootout.

I have no idea if he'll be drafted though.

John Gibson topped the CSS-mid-term rankings for goalies in the 2011 draft.

CSS said:
Goalie John Gibson is beginning to earn a reputation similar to his predecessor at the United States National Team Developmental Program, Jack Campbell.

Gibson is calm and composed even in the most pressure-packed moments of a game, just as Campbell was and still is for the U.S. on an international level. Campbell then went on to be the first U.S.-born player drafted last June -- taken at No. 11 by the Dallas Stars.

Now, just as Campbell was at this time one season ago, Gibson is the No. 1-rated player at his position on the NHL Central Scouting's mid-term ranking of the best North American goalies, released Monday.

"John has great net coverage and size (6-foot-3, 200 pounds), and is very strong," NHL Central Scouting goalie guru Al Jensen told NHL.com. "He's sound technically, moves very well laterally and is controlled. He's calm, not busy."

In 18 games with the Under-18 team this season, Gibson is 7-8-2 with a 3.25 goals-against average and .905 save percentage.

In 22 games with the U.S. National Under-17 Team last season, he went 8-12-1 with a 3.76 goals-against average and .895 save percentage. He also saw action in two games with the Under-18 team, going 2-0 with a 2.00 GAA and .932 save percentage. The University of Michigan-bound goalie also compiled a 3-1-1 record, 2.87 GAA and .917 save percentage in six international games.

The Pittsburgh native also went 3-0-0 with a 1.33 GAA and .957 save percentage at the 2010 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. The 17-year-old was listed as the top goalie in the United States Hockey League by Central Scouting when they released their preliminary rankings of draft-eligible prospects in November.

While Gibson and Campbell are poised under pressure, Jensen said he sees different styles between the two.

"Campbell is the more the quick, athletic type and Gibson is the more a controlled, strong positional type," Jensen said. "Both do have good size -- I like how strong Gibson is."

Another player to watch is Christopher Gibson who is rated #2 on CSS scouting list.

CSS said:
Gibson is 9-7-5 and leads the league with a 2.09 GAA and .930 save percentage in 21 games this season.

Jensen's view: "Christopher is very strong in his net and has great net presence. He plays big and has good command in his crease. He's very quick and aggressive.

For European goalies look no further then Finissh prospect Samu Perhonen.

Bruins 2011 Draft Watch said:
Perhonen has played very well for JYP's Under-20 junior team, posting a 2.57 GAA and .927 save percentage. He was Finland's third goalie at the 2011 WJC, and though he didn't play, looked good in practices as a Rask clone- tall (6-3), lean (170), extremely quick and fundamentally sound. The problem with the Bruins getting Perhonen is that the proverbial cat is out of the bag with this kid. If the B's were hoping that their close relationship and knowledge of him might be more of a secret that would give them an edge at draft time, that theory is out the window, as Perhonen has played well for Finland in the international tourneys this season and will likely further elevate his profile at the World Under-18s next month. If the Bruins are going to land him, they would probably need to do so in the second round, and the value of that pick may not warrant it being spent on yet another developmental goalie project albeit with the kind of promise Perhonen brings.

Central's top European netminder at midterm has been covered above, but he's got perhaps the greatest upside of any goaltender in this class. One NHL scout very familiar with him oozed about his technical excellence, mental toughness and mature game despite being a few days short of 18. Don't expect him to be on the board very long in June. His last name translates into the word 'butterfly' so like Swede Jesper Fasth last year, this kid is the most appropriately named prospect in the 2011 class.

Another reason to not be upset by Blues keeping their pick this year?

I don't see the Avs taking this guy in the top 5 of round 2. Maybe in the third round though or if they get a late 2nd somehow.

Now I haven't seen Campbell play, but HOLY sausage, if he's a quicker goalie than John Gibson, he'd be the Usain Bolt of goaltending. Gibson is the fastest goalie i've seen all year in the USHL.
