The inaugural Youth World Outdoor Ball Hockey Championships took place at the Brampton Ball Hockey Club this past weekend with teams competing for the coveted Champions’ jackets and many other great awards! Teams competed in three divisions … Youth Under 12 (U12); Youth Under 15 (U15); and Youth Under 18 (U18). The youth tournament weekend was the first of three event weekends over the next six weeks as part of the “ballhockey.com†14th Annual World Outdoor Ball Hockey Championships.
This is a special year as the “Worlds†have been expanded over three themed weekends … Youth – August 28-30 at the Brampton Ball Hockey Club; Women’s & Co-ed – September 25-27 at the Niagara Ball Hockey Club; and Men’s – October 2-4 at the Barrie Ball Hockey Club. We are anticipating well over 100 teams to participate this year (from all over North America) … which translates into more than 1500 participants competing for more than $30,000 in prizes.
The action got under way on Friday, August 28th as four Under 15 teams and four Under 18 teams took to the rink to kick things off. Saturday, August 29th saw an additional 14 games go in the books and the Under 12 teams joined the party! Sunday, August 30th saw some very spirited and close games as champions were crowned for the first time late if the afternoon.
Barrie Renegades Win Youth Under 12 Championships!
The Barrie Rock Solid Renegades went undefeated in their quest for the Youth Under 12 crown, winning a thrilling game against rival Barrie team, the Warriors. The final score was 4-2 but the close game was not decided until Keegan Martin scored his second goal of the contest with just 2:10 left in the third period. The Warriors had battled back from a 3-1 deficit to cut the lead to 3-2 on a late third period goal from Nick Lacoursiere. The Renegades were not to be denied and Martin put his team back up by two goals to seal the victory. The Renegades went to work with their high-powered offense throughout the event, and only faced a stiff challenge in the final game. Om their march to the final, the Renegades beat the Niagara Bulldogs 14-0; The Barrie Warriors 9-1; and the Brampton Bears 10-0. Brampton Bears goalie, Joshua Adam may have been the tournament MVP (for all divisions) as he made highlight reel save after save throughout the tournament. Adam had all players and parents cheering for him as he faced 50+ shots a game and robbed many shooters of sure goals. Other scorers for the Renegades in the Championship game were Hayden Fox and Nolan King. Braydon Johnston scored the other goal for the Warriors.
Innisfil Wave Take the Youth Under 15 Championships!
The Innisfil Wave have become used to racking up the wins at their local level and other tournaments, but the Youth WOBHC event proved to be a stronger test as they had to claw out some gutsy wins on their way to the Under 15 Championship. The Wave took the Championship game 3-1 over the St. Catharines Explosion … sealing the victory with an empty net goal with just 12 seconds left in regulation. Nathan Snowball led the scoring for the Wave with a pair of goals, including the game winner at 0:32 of the second period. Teammate Cole Ciccone had a great championship game as he potted the empty netter and assisted on both of Snowball’s goals. Matt Maloney scored the lone goal for the Explosion at 1:42 of the second period to knot the game at 1 goal apiece. The wave started the tournament against a very quick opponent, Team Pakistan from Brampton, and narrowly pulled out a 2-1 victory. The Wave played the Explosion team in their second preliminary game and coasted to an easy 5-0 win by jumping out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period. After earning a bye to Sunday’s semi-final, the Wave had another close game as they posted a 2-0 victory over the North York Lynx. Wave goalie Ron Laird was solid throughout the tournament, allowing just two goals if four games.
St. Catharines Explosion Capture Youth Under 18 Championships!
The St. Catharines Explosion needed overtime to defeat the Barrie Team Brute squad in the exciting Under 18 Final game as they took home the 3-2 victory. Charlie Sheehan was the big hero for the Explosion as he ripped a shot into the net just 43 seconds into overtime, on a nice feed from John Turner! The teams played a scoreless first period and Explosion starter Jesse Neufeld was pulled from his net due to illness early in the second, handing a 1-0 lead over to Katie Wainio. Team Brute wasn’t very welcoming and they put their first shot behind Wainio on a quick release from Tyler Yerex to tie the game at 1 each. The Barrie team went ahead at the 6:42 mark of the third period as Yerex scored his second of the contest. The Explosion team rallied to score with the extra attacker on the rink to pull even with just 13 seconds left in regulation on a Jesse Gibson goal. Anthony Setacci scored for St. Catharines early in the second for a brief 1-0 lead. The Explosion team went undefeated through the tournament and was victorious against Team Brute by a score of 5-3 in their first game. The Explosion team posted a 7-1 win over the Hamilton Spitfires and a 10-0 shelling of the Brampton Ball Hogs, before meeting up with Team Brute for a re-match in the Championship Final.
More than 200 participants took part in this year’s event with many taking home trophies and awards for placing in the top four teams in their respective divisions. Players came in from Barrie, Brampton, Hamilton, Innisfil, Malton, Niagara Falls, North York, and St. Catharines to compete for the three division championships.
