Here we go. Manning has one bad turnover against the team that made it to the finals in the first game of the season, and everyone wants him out of the lineup. Overreaction much? I'm glad no one here coaches the team.

The general dislike of Manning playing though is kind of justified... he has played 22 games now in the NHL and has not looked capable of being a decent bottom pairing guy... plus many of us have seen him play in the AHL, where while he is a good player at that level he still makes quite a lot of defensive gaffes.

I mean, Bourdon and Gustafsson were not derided... why? Because in their time with the Flyers both looked capable of being solid bottom pairing guys, and played accordingly at the NHL level.

And it is not just down to 'hype' or perceived value, as Marshall got the same treatment despite being a 2nd round pick. Why? He did not look capable of playing in the NHL to a good level.

I mean, I would love for him to develop and become even a solid bottom pairing option for the Flyers, but he has shown no signs of having either good enough defense, or good enough offense to make up for his defense. He will have to prove people wrong on ice over a decent stretch of games, and if he does I am sure people will quickly change their tune.

I wasn't a big fan of MDZ-Schenn last year, but if Manning is benched for Gudas we could see this lineup.

Schultz-Streit
MDZ-Schenn
Medvedev-Gudas

Gudas & Manning are place holders for the future of Hagg/Ghost/Morin anyway. Its pointless to debate their value. They won't be around longterm

I was totally fine with him before the game. The kid struggled all last night. He was overmatched. Scoring points in the AHL (and not playing the best defense) does NOT make him an NHL defender.

Also regarding your last sentence... what if Hack does make the change? How would you respond to that?

If he makes a change after one game, I say fire Hak...lol. Look, I'm not Manning's agent or anything, I just like seeing an undrafted kid who has been in the system and worked hard get a shot. He hasn't looked out of place in his previous call ups, but I know they were for limited minutes. Obviously he played well enough during the preseason to catch the coach and GM's eye.

All of that being said, I honestly think the best pairings for game two would be:

Streit-Schultz
Russian-MDZ
Schenn-Manning

This puts Manning back on the left side and maybe takes some of the defensive pressure off of him. Schenn can protect more and Manning can do his thing. I actually thought the two of them looked pretty solid in the preseason games, so I wouldn't mind the coaches giving them a regular season chance at it. Let's experiment early. And no, I don't think Gudas is any better than Manning other than with his physical play.

Most people here didn't want him in the line-up even before last night.

No one on that third line is going anywhere, they played well last night.

4th line...they were ok. Had a really good possession shift late. I've enjoyed White's play since he arrived, but he was pretty invisible last night. But it was the first game, no point in kneejerking the lineup around so soon.
