So I was curiously looking into how the Canucks got the 2nd and 3rd overall draft picks back in 1999. It all make sense except for one move.

Why did Burke trade the 1st overall pick for the 2nd overall pick, especially since he had to add a conditional 3rd? Not only did he trade down to a "lower" pick, he had to add to it. What gives?

Thanks

The third I believe was with the condition that Atlanta not draft either Sedin with the first overall pick. Something like that. Vancouver had the first overall and third overall, Atlanta had the second overall and Burke wanted to ensure he'd draft both twins? Correct me anyone if I'm mistaken.

Besides, we only needed one third round pick to select our future #1 defenseman, Rene Vydareny. Any other third rounder was irrelevant. :sarcasm:

Ah, makes sense. I guess it's always safer to get a guarantee with that conditional pick than to take another GMs word.

I like to trot this fun fact out:

On two separate occasions, the Canucks have had four 1999 first-round draft picks on their roster:

2005-06:
-Daniel Sedin
-Henrik Sedin
-Maxime Ouellet (22nd overall)
-Steve McCarthy (23rd overall)

2007-08
-Daniel Sedin
-Henrik Sedin
-Kris Beech (7th overall)
-Taylor Pyatt (8th overall)
