Nope. We can sign him as a UFA, although Fitzgerald has not been aggressive in pursuing NCAA or OHL free agents in his tenure. I'd sure love to see that change.

I'm not sure we really need to "compare" Barabosha, because he's just a very good version of an old school player type. He's a RD who thrives defensively and in the physical game, he plays angry and hits everything, he blocks shots and lives to shut down the opposition. But at the same time, he also skates well, handles the puck well and is visible to a fair degree in the offensive zone and transition. He's just a good hockey player.

Just noticed that this was posted underneath the youtube video.
The Krasnaya Armiya defenseman coming from a dynasty of hockey players decided on hockey when he had his choice between boxing and playing hockey.
Artyom Barabosha was born into a sporting family: his grandfather and his uncle are hockey players, and his dad is a boxer. A native of Omsk, he practiced both sports, but set his heart upon hockey after his first children's tournament. Boxing became a hobby for the defenseman and he still practices it.
Barabosha has been a CSKA system player since 2015. He made his JHL debut with Krasnaya Armiya in the 2020/2021 season, and played for the team in the 2021/2022 Kharlamov Cup finals. Artyom appeared in 81 games, scored four goals and was credited with ten assists in the space of two years in the JHL. But points are not the primary reason for the player having Rinat Khasanov’s confidence. The tenacious D-man does not avoid doing the grunt work, he battles along boards with great spirit, and he was ranked first among the army team players in the 2021/2022 season in terms of the number of bodychecks (50). In the 2022 offseason, 18-year-old Artyom is training with the main team - the championship winning CSKA. In an interview with the JHL website, the young defenseman talked about the 2021/2022 season, the preparation for the upcoming season, the 2022 draft and his passion for playing the guitar.

– How did you manage to balance hockey with school? –
It was hard to balance practices with lessons. I missed school because of games, had to ask teachers to let me complete missed assignments. I was not an A student, B’s and C's were the most common grades of mine. I liked biology, studied it at home in addition to school classes, and I always knew that English is important in sports. I'm at an intermediate level and I need to improve my English.
– In July you were drafted by the New Jersey Devils. Did you follow the 2022 draft? –
Of course, my whole family were watching it. I wanted to see which Russian players would be picked – it was of great interest. I was very surprised and glad that I was drafted, even though I was a late-round pick. Team representatives called me right away and congratulated.
– Where you worried? –
Yes, but I knew that not being drafted did not mean the end of my career. You still need to keep working on yourself and developing. But when they called my name, I breathed a sigh of relief. My family, relatives and friends started congratulating me, it was very nice.

The Article that is linked has some more questions but most of them are just "getting to know the player" type stuff. Two things from gleamed from the full article is that He says he's an emotional player and that one of the players he looks up to is Nikita Zadorov because of the hits and he stands up for his teamates.
Perhaps my Comparison choice earlier in the thread bares a little bit of weight. Also having a player that knows how to box would be fun to have during a scrap

A hockey player with a background in boxing and a professional boxer dad to teach him?
Fighters in the league are going to shit their pants if he ever gets good enough to dress regularly in the NHL.

I currently have Barabosha ranked neck-and-neck with Seamus Casey for #2 RD prospect in the NJ Devils prospect pool. I am extremely confident he'll be an NHLer. Just an outstanding pick in the 7th round.
Keep in mind many prospect writers -- even well-known ones -- do not watch the MHL. Barabosha just has so many qualities which NHL teams covet in their defensemen. He's a very good skater, he's big and strong, he understands how to defend, he plays with intelligence and compete and extreme physicality. Barabosha is also very impressive with the puck and his breakouts and not afraid to join the rush. He's got tools to produce some solid numbers offensively, and all the indicators of a shut-down, physical defender.
We should all keep an eye on this kid, he's one hell of a prospect.

Tough game for defense, but Artyom Barabosha prevented a lot of offensive pressure from SKA-1946. Was on the ice when CSKA missed goals only in PK and it wasn`t his fault. A lot of physicallity, gap control, defensive work by the stick.

Thanks for sharing that. He had a very solid game but he was way down low on that goal. One silly question I have is that KHL or MHL or VHL? He shows all the tools a defender needs so hopefully he develops his game.

Kirill Dolzhenkov. He was picked by CBJ one pick before our Orlov. As I understand he will play in KHL this season in Kun` Lun`.
MHL. Defensively he is working very well. He looks very mobile for his age and size, he is doing right things on the short distance, by his stick and by his body.
Offensive side of the game is questionable. I would even say transitional side of the game is questionable. I can`t say something for now. Because I haven't seen enough. I would say until he will play on the higher level, we can`t make even intermediate conclusions.
For now he is mobile and big and doing everything right with his size on defensive side of the game. We need more context.
