Should definitely start making calls to coaches, academies, and scouts. Be sure to include videos so they know how special the kid is. Once that's done, you can start shopping for the new house the kid is going to buy you once he makes the show.

Sounds more like you're doing this for you and not your son. When it comes to kids making the show, often it's not because they can hold a stick at an early age. There's a lot more that goes into it. The desire to play. The desire to train. The money from you to accommodate the training, the nutrition specialist, the coaching, etc.

I'm sure there's a lot of babies that were given hockey sticks to hold by their dads thinking this is going to be the greatest thing ever,

So I know this is a joke thread, but just in case some day someone opens this looking for a serious response for how to get young kids started in playing hockey...

Mini-sticks! Give the kid a mini-stick. Play mini-stick hockey with him in the basement. Just make it fun. My kids used to love playing mini-sticks with me. Take shots, make ridiculous saves (or not), just stickhandle and wrestle with them.

Next step is skating. Get them on skates. Whether as part of a hockey program or not. As soon as they can walk you can try putting them in skates.

Then it's kind of up to them. They either like it or they don't. Two of my boys like it, one doesn't and he retired from his hockey career at the age of 8. And that's fine.

Tired of HF boards and the negativity on here. OP had a valid question. To answer your question as I have a son about the same age.

What we started, and worked for us, was having him work on his swinging motion. We gave him an adult sized axe as that requires both hands. I keep him out in the cold until he is able to cut down about 5-10 trees a day. Then I allow him to come in and eat, and drink a bit before I send him back out. Seems to work for us anyway. He now has no problems holding up an adult size stick. Good luck!

Worst case outcome, you've got cord wood for winter.

This is great advice, but I'd suggest counting his feet before he starts and again after a workout session. If the two numbers don't match, consult a medical professional.
