No what he did was panic.
I'm watching on dvr, he didn't. All 4 other linemates are exhausted. He has a pen defender sitting on the blue line blocking him up the wall. He has another pen forward just in front of the blue taking away a pass up the middle. He has a third pen forward coming across the top of the circle taking away space. And he has malkin behind him at the faceoff dot.
Option 1. He could do what he did, safely float the puck up the ice to get a break and calm things down.
Option 2. Try to avoid the icing by lightly chipping the puck off the glass, quite possibly getting the puck intercepted by the defender holding the blue line. Even assuming it gets by the defender to the neutral zone, its no guarantee his teammates get changed since they have the long change, in fact it likely just gets the scenario restarted with arguably foligno getting off, still leaving 3 exhausted guys in play.
Option 3. Carry the puck. He could have tried to dangle the pen pursuing from the inside, but if he loses the puck, super high risk situation ensues. He could, from the standstill when he received the puck, try to quickly skate up the wall. But he would have gotten caught from the side or had to slip thru 2 pens covering the blue line and risk a quick re entry if an exhausted gionta can't help. Is only legit hope for skating would have been to take it back into his own corner and hope a tired malkin can't strip him and he can then make a pass or skate thru the fresh wave of pens who would come out by the time he retreated. And his d pair would still be trapped.
Ya the icing brings a face off and no change. But it gives everyone still on the ice a 20 second blow and creates a controlled situation from a broken one.
I prefer option one. He has had other mistakes, this wasn't one of them.
