The only logical way of writing dates is to move consistently from the largest time-scale to the smallest.

Year : Month : Day : Hour : Minute : Second

That is not the only logical way. It's the best way for sorting, but the least efficient way for looking at dates within a shorter time frame. In most contexts, dates fall within months of the present time, making the year the least immediately important part of the equation.
