Canes Agree to Terms with Valentin Zykov
Good to have him cheaply in the fold. Hopefully he really breaks out.

"Valentin is a big body who proved he had the ability to finish around the net on the AHL and NHL levels last season," said Waddell.
League minimum salary in both years.
If he can pot 15 goals that is a good contract. I'm surprised he didn't request some bonuses based on goals scored. 1m for breaking 20 goals?
I would like to see the NHL move from all the guaranteed deals to deals with low floors and lots of bonuses.
Ex Skinner.
2m base salary.
1m bonus 20g
1m more 30g
750k 25 assists
750k make playoffs
750k for 5 playoff goals
250k 5 or more SO goals
500k for 5 or more gwg.
League minimum salary in both years.
I'd say that's a smart contract by Carolina given he's played all of 10 games, but I'm surprised it wasn't for 1 year. If I was Zykov I'd want to roll the dice on a 1 year, play my ass off, and hope for a much better extension. I know next to nothing about how contracts work though, so that's just me talking out of my ass.
In exchange for a one-way. Makes big money whether he makes the team or not. Tough to say no to that, vs. a $900,000 on a two-way where if he has a tough camp he’s back down to $80k in Charlotte.
What? That makes no sense at all. If he took a one-year deal and had a great year next year he could easily take another one-year deal for far more than $700k (given that he'd be arbitration eligible then), then cash in on a long term deal the next year. It's in the team's best interest to have him locked in for two years at a low price.Even if he scored 30, somehow, what's that turn into? 3-4M a year with term? Maybe? Now if he puts up 50 combined over the next two, he'll be in a much stronger position to ask for closer to 5. I think he wins in the long run, and Carolina will have a better understanding of what they're committing to next time negotiations roll around.
He would have to clear waivers to go back to Charlotte. Considering what he did in the AHL and in his brief call-up in the NHL, I'm sure another team would give him a chance.
I was more surprised by the term. Zykov takes the low risk path and banks the money. Carolina takes on a little risk in search of a high reward.

seems likely that the jumping off point for negotiations with zykov was a one way deal for next year and the canes pushed to make it 2 or 0. it seems like his side should have been more interested in a prove it contract. that second year is not congruent with his potential earning power overseas. both sides probably gave a little. it's a solid deal.
one thing that can't be understated is how much tougher this bottom six has gotten this season as compared to last year. martinook, ferland, zykov, mcginn... it's a dynamic we haven't had in a while to be able to ice some skilled grinders and not pick between skill or grinder. the days of calling up brendan woods and patrick brown for a little extra jam are done. the subtle rebuild of 3rd and 4th lines has been fantastic. not that zykov is the most in your face player ever, but he's certainly not afraid of the physicality required to score the dirty goals. plus, it will be encouraging to not see the team collectively skate away from bad hits like they didn't see them happen.
They really don't have a choice because of arbitration.I have a hard time seeing Carolina being interested in signing a young guy who just popped 25-30 to a one-year deal. This deal makes sense for both sides.

And remember that the baseline we're comparing it to is 700k. If Zykov scored 30 goals and said "I'll take 2.0M for one year" (Hoffman's contract that he got in arbitration a few years back) you think the team would really say no?
I don't see how it's a good thing from Zykov's perspective to be locked in at 700k for 19-20 if he scores 30 goals next year.
