There are rumors about Patrick Laine and his trade. Maybe its only a rumor aka Eklund, but. Lets look to the history.

Lets compile a List of traded young Superstars:

Teemu Selänne is first:

On February 6, 1996, he was traded to Anaheim. The Mighty Ducks sent first-round draft picks Chad Kilger and Oleg Tverdovsky, along with a third-round selection at the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, in exchange for Selänne, Marc Chouinard and a fourth-round draft pick. Selänne was upset when notified of the deal during practice and left the Winnipeg Arena without speaking to anyone.

Dany Heatley was 24 when he was traded to Ottawa, so he surely counts. I can recall Phaneuf being still very highly rated when he moved from Flames to Leafs at 24.

 Maybe. :D

But (as i forgot to specify) , Young Superstars. Gretzky was 27 years old? Hm, then also Sellänne doesnt fit much, he was 26.

Then lets make a line: Patrik Laine is 21 years old. So, lets say, Young Superstars in a age 25 and younger.

Well, if Laine is a superstar for these purposes...Tyler Seguin easily makes this cut...

I may be remembering wrong, but I recall Seguin not exactly being at that "super"star level when he got traded. His numbers were down a bit from his breakout sophomore year, and he had 1 goal in 22 games in Boston's run to the finals. Definitely not common to see a guy taken at #2OA get traded at 21YO, though.

Surprised no one has mentioned Phil Kessel yet...

Others: Mats Sundin, Owen Nolan and Doug Gilmour.

Less than a year removed from being the Vezina winner and 1st All Star, was Jim Carey considered a "superstar" when he went to Boston?

He wouldn’t be classified as a “superstar” but Bobby Smith was a good young star when he was traded from Minnesota to the Habs in 1983.

Does Bobby Smith count as a "Superstar" or just a Star? He was a Perennial Top 20 Scorer, 450 Points in 386 Games when the trade happened with a Peak of 114 Points. He got Traded to Montreal in exchange for Keith Acton and Mark Napier (2 Top 6 Forwards), along with a 3rd round pick, in 1983. He was 25.

EDIT: Someone beat me to it, lmao.

Peter Forsberg was 19
Eric Lindros was 18
Yeah, great example. It was before they played in the NHL but of course Lindros was just about the biggest prospect in NHL history. Forsberg had just finished a great 18 year old season, and was a very big prospect too. Although his biggest breakout was the season after the trade, when he scored 31 points at the WJC and was very dominant in the top league in Sweden.

Nobody has mentioned yet...

BRETT HULL was 23.

He was traded from Calgary (where he had just scored 50 points in 52 games) to St. Louis.

He had a great shot and little else other than a bad attitude. He never liked to backcheck.

Bobby Carpenter was 23 when he was part of the trade from Washington to the Rangers.
Rick Middleton was 22 his final season in New York before getting shipped to Boston.
Tony Amonte and Doug Weight were both around 22 when they each got traded from NYR.

Doug Gilmour was traded to Calgary by St.Louis in that Brett Hull deal.
No, he wasn't.

Hull & Bosek were traded to St. Louis for Wamsley & Ramage on March 7th 1988 at the trade deadline.

Gilmour wasn't traded until the following preseason (Sept. 6th).

But it's easy to understand how one's memory could fuse the two.

Rod Brind’Amour was 21 when St. Louis traded him to Philadelphia.

Larry Murphy was 22 when LA dealt him to Washington.

The Rangers shipped 25 year old Sergei Zubov to Pittsburgh for Nedved.
