Florida also using up a lot of OT and late goal magic in the regular season. They are definitely a team that can't handle their shit without making it interesting and having it come down to the wire. Not a good trait to be bringing into the playoffs. Can't repeat that forever.

To be fair, it has been quite similar story for Hurricanes with 10 of the W's coming via OT or SO.

It has been a competitive division from top to bottom.

Also to be fair, the Canes had that same vibe a couple of years ago when they were alllllmost talented enough to be a real contender, and then added a couple of decent players and have been whooping ass ever since. Florida is poised to make that same leap.

Do we really care that much about having the best record over Vegas/Colordao? I mean I guess with re-seeding and home-ice advantage in a theoretical cup finals against Vegas or Colorado it could matter but I don't think that's all that important, more important just locking up the top seed in our division and a better record than the East/Canada teams and being healthy going into the playoffs (plus our last 2 games are against Nashville, if we have the division locked up by then I'd absolutely rest players in those games and help them out so we are more likely to face them than Dallas)...

We have no idea how the divisions stack up against each other so in a theoretical final 4 of Carolina, Vegas/Colorado, Toronto/Edmonton, and any of the 4 East teams does it really matter who we play in the final 4 round? Toronto is ahead of all the East teams right now and if we don't get the best record we'd play them instead of the East winner, Edmonton is behind them so vice versa. But who knows if those 2 Canada teams are actually worse/better than whichever team comes out of the East? I'm not sure that seeding then is so important, just so long as we avoid Vegas/Colorado before the Cup finals (which already seems like a given). Home ice advantage in the cup finals would be nice but I don't really think we need it. If we win out and get the best record then great, but I won't be upset if Vegas finishes with 1 more point than us or whatever. I'm not superstitious about the Presidents trophy either...

There are 32 teams in the league going forward. On average, a fan will see 1-2 seasons in their lifetime in which their team finishes 1st overall.

Yes, I would very much like to see this, hang that banner, and have that memory. If we miss it this year, it might not happen for some of us ever again.

And at least IMO, there will probably be more in the future. I see at least Houston and Quebec City with teams in the next 20 years.

So, that was a fun game last night, huh? Shame there were no potential swings in the standings, OH MY GOD, MINNESOTA

So uhh... that kind of makes tonight an important game for us. Division wise, a win tonight eliminates Florida from contention and pushes Tampa to the brink. And it moves us one day closer to possibly clinching home ice throughout the playoffs. That would be fun.

So apparently some things went down across the league last night. Tom Wilson, I hear, is back in the news. Its probably time the league steps in.

Back to us, because that's what we're all really here about. Dundon seems to have done a pretty good job since he took over, no?

Team has been playing pretty well lately. What's our secret, you ask?

Great GDT once again @Svechhammer ! It’s like Canesmas when I open these.

Also, I want to give a special shout out to @tarheelhockey . I’ve DM’d you in the past to acknowledge your exceptional Posting on the Main Boards (which I honestly don’t visit often).

However, I think a more public comment in this place is warranted after seeing how you handled yourself in the Tom Wilson Threads the last 24 hours. You provided clear, cited information, replied to trolls with class, and presented yourself in a way that newer, younger Members could follow.

We've got +20 goal differential on them with the same number of overall wins in 2 less games played, and 2 more regulation wins as well. Obviously we are a better team as our record indicates and I'm not saying we don't have some of those same tendencies, but Florida really walks a tight rope every game it seems.

That's fair. I guess I just don't get too worked up about regular season standings, it's pretty rare the team with the best record in any sport wins the championship that same year so just being 1st going into the playoffs doesn't mean much (as other Carolina Panthers fans can attest to...). It's fun and it'll be cool if we do finish with the top record, I just personally don't care that much about it to the point where I'll be actively rooting for another team like Vegas to lose where it really doesn't affect us all that much.

I look at it like this...

The President's Trophy banner right now is the only one we don't have in the rafters. We have Divisional Champions banners, two Conference Champions banners, a Stanley Cup Champions banner, and multiple retired jerseys. The President's Trophy banner would complete the collection, and would do so before our 25th anniversary.

Yeah that's fair, I guess that's just where we differ a bit... It's a nice accolade but personally I just don't see a President's Trophy banner being all that different from a participation trophy... I know they're not mutually exclusive, but I'd much rather have 2 Championship banners than a Championship banner and a President's Trophy banner to complete the collection. A President's Trophy banner won't make me feel any better about coming up short of winning it all if we don't win it all...

From Wikipedia:
The Presidents' Trophy has been awarded 33 times to 17 different teams since its inception during the 1985–86 NHL season.[1]
As the team with the best regular season record, the Presidents' Trophy winner is normally guaranteed home-ice advantage throughout the entire Stanley Cup playoffs.[nb 1] However, it does not guarantee playoff success, as only eight of these winners have gone on to win the Stanley Cup. Three other teams reached the Stanley Cup Finals, but failed to win. The last team to win both the Presidents' Trophy and the Stanley Cup in the same season was the 2012–13 Chicago Blackhawks. The only team to accomplish this more than once is the Detroit Red Wings.

8 of 33. so about 25%... wonder the odds of the rest of the seeds 2-16.. I'll assume they are worse..

I'm saving my unhinged rants for the playoffs. If I use them all up, they'll take away my ability to like posts and there won't be any reason to come round here anymore.
